In this seminar organised by IAP on 14 March Lara Broecke shows how Cennino Cennini changed the practice and understanding of art and its history.
Around 1400, a little-known Italian artist, Cennino Cennini, wrote a book describing the techniques and materials of his craft. Historians were aware that the manuscript existed, but it was not until 1823 that it was finally published. The effect of the publication was profound, on historians, conservators and practising artists. The story of the translations of Cennino Cennini’s Libro dell’arte into English is the story of some remarkable and fascinating figures in the history of art and of the roots and evolution of the discipline known as technical art history.
