Today was a day to remember as we celebrated one of the club’s greatest achievements. Wednesday Junior Sailing marked its 40th anniversary, and it was wonderful to see so many children, volunteers, and supporters who have helped us over the years join us for a spectacular event on the water! A special thank you should also be mentioned to Lymington who have been offering their generous support since 1992!

It’s hot out there, but water temperatures remain dangerously cold. If you’re heading to the coast, remember to if you get into trouble in the water. In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
Follow our five key steps to find your float style. And remember, always practice at a lifeguarded pool or beach, and let the lifeguard know what you’re doing.

The five float steps are:
1. Tilt your head back with ears submerged.
2. Relax and try to breathe normally
3. Move your hands to help you stay afloat.
4. It’s OK if your legs sink - we all float differently.
5. Spread your arms and legs to improve stability.

ROUND THE ISLAND RACE 2024

The RNLI is the official charity for this year’s race around the Isle of Wight, which typically features more than 1,000 yachts and thousands of amateur and professional sailors.

The charity has been working closely with the race team and The Island Sailing Club to raise funds which will go to the seven RNLI lifeboat stations involved on the day, who as well as Yarmouth will be - Cowes RNLI Lifeboat, RNLI Calshot Lifeboat, Bembridge RNLI, RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat, RNLI Lymington Lifeboat, and Portsmouth Lifeboat Station. Funds raised will go specifically towards the training of their volunteer crews.

The race starts and ends in Cowes, with the first start at 6am and the competitors racing anti-clockwise around the island. With winds forecast to be up to 40mph during the race, the RNLI is urging competitors to be aware of the risks and take the necessary measures to stay safe. Competitors can view up-to-date forecasts on the event website www.roundtheisland.org.uk

Harry Leslie, a Launch Authority at Cowes RNLI has taken part four times and will be involved in overseeing safety cover on Saturday.
He said: ‘Please remember to take measures to stay safe: wear a suitably maintained lifejacket, carry a means for calling for help and call 999/ch 16 on VHF for the Coastguard if needed.’

If you would like to help us to raise funds towards the training costs of the stations involved in supporting the race please donate via the JustGiving page or there will be local RNLI volunteers roaming around the Official Shoreside Venue on The Parade throughout the race weekend.

Yarmouth RNLI would like to wish all participants the best of luck in the race tomorrow!
A safe race, is a good race! Enjoy! 😊

The 80th anniversary of D-Day is a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Their courage and determination marked a turning point in World War II, paving the way for the liberation of Europe from tyranny. As we remember and honor those who fought and those who fell, we are reminded of the enduring values of freedom, unity, and resilience that their actions enshrined for future generations.

On the 17th May the Lymington voluntary crew were paged at 5.08pm by HM Coastguard. They were requested to launch to a 23ft motor vessel with a broken down engine and drifting by the Needles, with 2 people onboard.

The lifeboat was quick to launch and proceeded at speed out of the river. The lifeboat was quickly on scene and a decision was made to tow the vessel back to Lymington as it would have caused a danger to navigation given its current position.

A lifeboat crew member was placed on board the casualty vessel to help establish the tow line.

The motor vessel was taken back to the HM pontoon and the lifeboat was prepared and ready for service again at 6.20pm.

Helm Greg said “The casualties did exactly the right thing in calling for help and were both wearing lifejackets.”

Crew: Greg Pachany (helm) Ed Wallrock, Asher White, Ben Jefferys.

On Saturday the 27th April at 5.13pm Lymington voluntary crew were paged. HM Coastguard had tasked the crew with an immediate launch.

A witness called 999, reporting a person in the water, just South of the Needles Cafe in Milford on Sea, wearing black and yellow clothing.

The lifeboat launched in 9 minutes and travelled at speed out of the Lymington River. Given the nature of the potential rescue, Solent Coastguard also tasked the helicopter Rescue 175 to support with the search. Mudeford also launched to help with the search as the tide was ebbing towards the West.

Lymington lifeboat arrived on scene at 5.20pm and conducted a parallel search along with Rescue 175 and Mudeford RNLI. After an hour search all assets were stood down. The crew came across tree branches, fishing pots and a yellow inflatable duck, which was brought back to the station.

The helm Greg said “The person who called 999 did absolutely the right thing, in this instance it was a false alarm with good intent.”
