Setting the typeface for FROZEN HELL, Phil, speeded up, setting the metal type we are using for the books, it is a time consuming and work heavy job, all the text and relief prints and the second colours are set by hand, extraordinary craftsmanship from Hand and Eye.

Here's a little clip of Rich Tong checking the Roman Edition, you can get a sense of the size of the book! The scale of the immersive experience of the oversized book gives you an idea of the huge colour plates waiting inside.
Following on from the and last clip in a previous post, where Rich Tong cuts the card to create the sculptured cover of the book FROZEN HELL, here he is molding the goatskin leather into the shapes and foil blocking the running man. I find this both mesmerising and in awe at the skill as he sculpts the cover!

First of a number of short clips that we'll be putting up of Rich creating the two editions of FROZEN HELL. These are little cut down edits from a longer film which will show the complete book being made.
First off, following on from the previous post, is the different planes that Rich cuts to create the sculptured leather working for the cover of the book that will fit into the solander box...
Greg at work! Greg sent us clips of him painting, in the last shot you can see the size of the original of one of the plates that come in the climax of the story. Our Roman Edition of FROZEN HELL has the plate nearly the same size as his original! The painting gives an idea of the scale of the book…
We do most of Arete’s books using the very old craft tradition of metal type, when that comes into Phil Abel’s studio is then put together to make each line and each page. You can see some of the process in the stories below. But here is film of Phil proof testing each page for FROZEN HELL!
Frozen Hell. The book is made with metal monotype, each word is cast by the foundry and set by Phil and Robert at Hand and Eye Press, it is a lengthy process, I'll show you some more clips of the words being set soon. Once we have checked the soft proofs and Phil has set the type, it is then checked with a proof. Here you can see some of the work behind scenes of a couple of the pages being pulled so we can check everything is good before we go ahead!
Coraline Standard edition printing, this was a really complex job for Phil at Hand and Eye, we wanted to print the plates on the page BUT still have the red thread and frames to be letterpress. The dead register across two forms of printing is complex but...looks great!
As an addition to the post below, as FB won't allow me to put a vid and photo's in the same post, why not? Words of Fire is about to go, here's a movie of how each signed numbered softcover book cover is put together.
