Staff offices located in the Virginia Woolf Building of King’s College London (KCL), will be moved to the top two floors of Bush House South East Wing (SE) among other locations.

The lease for the Virginia Woolf Building (VWB) will end in autumn 2025.

KCL announced in October that 700 staff members from Arts & Humanities, Social Science & Public Policy and Law, as well as other professional areas, would need to be relocated as part of a series of wider changes.

VWB currently houses the Liberal Arts common room as well as study and social spaces for students of Modern Languages.

The seventh and eighth floors of Bush House SE are permanently closing for students on 6 February. When asked by Roar, almost 75% of students said they use the student spaces on these floors at least 2 or 3 times a week.

King’s College London (KCL) will be closing the seventh and eighth floors of Bush House South East Wing (BH SE) on 6 February, KCL Student Union (KCLSU) posters on the 7th Floor announced today. Activity rooms will remain open.

A KCLSU officer told Roar that as things stand, the closure is permanent. There is currently no information on what would happen with the closed space.

“These moves are one of the ways King’s is investing in our campuses to support the student and staff experience,” state the posters.

There are approximately 100 study spaces on Floor 7 and a further 100 spaces for relaxation on Floor 8, also called The Meadow.

The “deep retrofit” of Bush House South West Wing is set to open in September 2027, King’s College London announced.

The refit is led by architect firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and aims to “set the tone for the future of King’s as an elite learning institution”. Plans showcase ‘The King’s Agora’ – a flagship venue and lecture theatre with a 360-degree screen setup, envisioned as the future heart of student life at King’s.

Over 70 second-year engineering students at King’s College London (KCL) filled out a complaint form in response to the LGBTQ+ focus of a group project.

The Engineering Design Empowerment Module project, assigned on 16 October, requires students to create a product for LGBTQ+ people, focused on providing education or safe spaces.

The project has resulted in divided opinions amongst the more vocal engineering students. Many voiced dissatisfaction with the module and department, and one student complained about their peers’ reaction towards the LGBTQ+ focus of the module. Most complaints questioned the project’s relevance to engineering.

On the last day of term, 50 students gave their time to write to their MP voicing their alarm over the homelessness crisis in the UK. I had the privilege to read the many heartfelt, compassionate and eloquent letters calling for change. Six KCL societies were a part of the event, urging the government to remain focused on their responsibility to protect everyone who is in this country.

***
“As King’s College London Students, we are aware of the large number of people in the UK, and particularly in London, who find themselves in a situation of homelessness. We consider this to be extremely concerning. More than 1 in 50 Londoners, including children, are believed to be homeless. As such they survive by using emergency accommodation, sofa-surfing, or rough sleeping.”

On 22 November, King’s College London Rugby Football Club (KCLRFC) hosted a charity egging event outside Bush House, raising money for charity. They also live-streamed the event on their Instagram.

The event was hosted as part of KCLRFC’s charity drive for Movember (a men’s health charity), for which several members of the society are also growing out their facial hair to raise money. In addition to being egged by passersby, participants have been actively promoting awareness about men’s health issues, encouraging donations and sharing their personal fundraising journeys on their Instagram story.

From 19 November 2024, The King’s College London Student Union (KCLSU) will begin selling Karma Cola at the Shack, following conversations within the Union to provide ‘more ethical products’ at KCLSU venues.

This move marks the launch of a KCLSU pilot project aiming to explore more sustainable and socially responsible product offerings around campus.

Should the trial prove commercially successful enough, it is possible that Karma Cola will eventually become the only cola brand offered at KCLSU venues.
