President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the nation's highest civilian honor—to 19 distinguished individuals during a ceremony at the White House on January 4, 2025. Among the honorees were former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Michael J. Fox, and actor-director Denzel Washington.

Hillary Clinton was recognized for her decades of public service, including her roles as First Lady, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and as the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party.

Michael J. Fox received the honor for his acting career and his advocacy for Parkinson's disease research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Denzel Washington was acknowledged for his contributions to American culture through his performances in film and theater, as well as his philanthropic efforts.

Other notable recipients included conservationist Jane Goodall, chef and humanitarian José Andrés, U2 frontman Bono, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, science educator Bill Nye, basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The ceremony also featured posthumous awards to civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, former Attorney General and U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and former Michigan Governor George Romney.

President Biden praised the honorees as "extraordinary people who have significantly shaped American culture and causes."
