On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
You’ll Do For Me…
“The last track we wrote and recorded. We had eleven songs and just felt we needed twelve but didn’t want to write something overtly Christmassy as we thought we’d covered everything. So, Les and I were chatting and said we should write something about friendship along the lines of “When I find myself in times of trouble” and I just said “you’re the last one on my list” … we just laughed but quickly thought, actually there’s something there. And the lyric just happened. As did Les’s melody! A perfect end for the album and another wonderful contribution from Liz [Hanks] on cello.” - Paul Cookson

All These Resolutions I Know I’ll Never Keep…
“Another from the first few sessions we recorded with Don in Retford. One thing we do remember was that we needed a middle eight so while Les was recording vocals, Don and I wrote a middle eight and handed it him through the door as he was singing and recording! In fact we liked it so much, it eventually became the chorus and the original chorus became the middle eight. I am pleased that we got twelve chimes of Big Ben to fit in with the end too.” - Paul Cookson

It Isn’t Really Christmas Until Noddy Starts To Sing…
“An old poem from my Touched By The Band Of Nod poetry collection (still available folks if you need a Christmas gift!). The second or third song Les and I wrote I think. The first was “Rose Tinted Glasses”, followed by Coz We Luv You and this. We had great fun making the video at St Saviour’s Church, Retford after a Pies, Peas and Performances with Don. Where everything started.” - Paul Cookson

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
I’ll Be Your Christmas Adam If You’ll Be My Christmas Eve…
“This song dates back to the Cup Of Tea recording sessions when Don joined Les and I in rock and roll Retford. If I remember rightly, this was another lyric written in the wake of The Darkness – a light-hearted tongue in cheek fun number. Les actually turned it into something of a swing number – perfect for Michael Buble I’d say…” - Paul Cookson

On the eighths day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
We Are The Thread…
“If the film ever gets made this would be the final climactic song. In the story, the final image is of Santa flying away from the world, still unaware of the unravelling thread behind him… and the world is surrounded by the thread of love all around the world. We wanted a song that had a circular melody and no chorus that built up – I suppose there was little bit of “My Oh My” and “Sailing” in our thoughts.” - Paul Cookson
“Paul was aiming for a Slade power ballad and I was aiming for Cat Stevens and we end up with something different! And something very us” - Les Glover

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
Gonna Ride A Red Nose Reindeer…
“Santa visits the first house on his Christmas Eve visit and snags the magic thread on the hook that is holding the little girl’s stocking. He is unaware of this as his coat is massive and he only looks forward. The thread unravels behind him as he goes back up the chimney… The little girl and her cat wake up and are intrigued by the thread so they follow it downstairs to the chimney. They pull it and are suddenly catapulted into the sky behind the sleigh. When they are rescued, there is no time to return them home straight away so they have to help Santa before Rudolph takes them home – hence the song!” - Paul Cookson
“This was originally going to be a reggae song but as we were recording it, it became a more Creedence Clearwater feel which suited the song much better.” - Les Glover

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
The Magic In The Fabric…
“Another one from the book / film idea . The basic story is that Santa’s suit is made of a magic thread and it is this that allows him down chimneys, through keyholes etc, hence this little song explaining that magic.” - Paul Cookson

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
Christmas Time Is Rubbish…
“This [song] was another related to The Thread That Is Red. Martin and I were thinking of a back story to the original poem so we could pitch it as a possible animated Christmas feature. So, we decided that “Christmas would be rubbish” (at first) for the little girl in the story. We thought that if we were pitching this as a possible animated feature then it needed several songs and this would be the opening one. And it’s me saying “BAH! HUMBUG!” - lead voca!” - Paul Cookson
“When Don heard the demo he said he was going to channel his inner Bo Diddley for this one and it makes the song.” - Les Glover

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
Yule Do For Me…
“Originally this [song] started off as “Yule Be My Angle.” I think it was shortly after the Darkness’s Christmas song - long before Les, Don and The Flames. I sort of saw it as a tongue in cheek power ballad and then Les worked his magic and we turned it into the beautiful piece it is now. Our great friend Graham Bottley came down to the studio and added violin. Liz Hanks also added cello to several pieces and this works perfectly.” - Paul Cookson
“That’s the joy of a collaboration, one doesn’t know how the other imagines the song so you end up with something different.” - Lea Glover

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me -
Never Mind The Baubles…
“This is actually Martin’s [Chatterton] title. We have got this picture book idea - The Thread That Is Red - based on a children’s poem of mine and Martin was thinking of other possible titles. This hadn’t worked for the children’s book but was perfect for this [song]. We didn’t want it too negative - hence the chorus “Let’s all carry on…” - Paul Cookson
“A nice nod to the ‘Pistols’ too!” - Les Glover
