The History of "Gbedu"

You've probably heard the phrase "Gbedu wey dey burst brain" or "When the Gbedu dey enter body" in Nigerian songs. Today, "Gbedu" is synonymous with banging music, but its origins reveal a much deeper meaning.

In Yoruba culture, "Gbedu" refers to a sacred drum, symbolizing royalty and power. Traditionally, it was played exclusively for kings and high chiefs during grand ceremonies. The drum was so revered that ordinary people were forbidden from beating it.

The Gbedu drum belongs to the four great Yoruba drum families, alongside the Dundun (Talking Drum), Batá, and Sakara. The mother drum (Iya Ilu) leads the beat, creating rhythms that once made kings dance in royal palaces.

A Yoruba proverb highlights the sacred process of Gbedu drum-making: "Aiku ekiri akole fi awore se gbedu" ("The ekiri (deer) being yet alive, the skin cannot be tanned and used as a drumhead.").

Next time you hear "this Gbedu is sweet", remember the royal roots of the rhythm!

King Jaja’s Canoe

In 1882, one of King Jaja’s grand canoes sailed the Opobo River, a symbol of his power and the thriving palm oil trade that made Opobo the largest European trading hub on the West African coast.

The massive canoe, adorned with a proud flag and shaded canopy, carried dignitaries and traders, while skilled rowers paddled in unison, their chants echoing across the waters.

With a fleet of 300-400 such canoes, each holding up to 2,400 gallons of palm oil, Jaja controlled trade routes stretching to Old Calabar and Gabon. However, European forces loomed, eager to take control. For now, the canoe glided on—a testament to Opobo’s strength and Jaja’s enduring legacy.
