In remembrance of the Great Ama Kodu Joof.

In November 1087, the great Seereer leader Ama Kodu Joof (a.k.a. Ama Gôdô Maat) defeated the Almoravid Arab-Berber invaders and jihadists, and killed their leader Abu Bakr ibn Omar at the Battle of Khoo Maak. Remember his name, and remember all the Seereer greats who over the centuries defended and died for our people in order to preserve our ancient religious past and way of life - free from foreign invasion and forced conversion to their religious beliefs. May their names continue remain upon our very lips. Goling!

Our sincere condolences to the family of Senegal's legendary drummer Babou Ngom. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of legendary Senegalese master drummer Babou Ngom, who passed away on 14 August 2024 at Gandiaye, Kaolack (Senegal).

Babou was one of Senegal's master drummers well knowned within the njom scene, who had worked or performed with many legendary artists during his long career, including the late Yande Coudou Sene, the late Khady Diouf, Youssou Ndour, Ablaye Cissoko, etc., as well as running his group.

As an artist, he mastered the old Seereer classical motifs and drums, as well as new motifs, and could could play at any event or style.

In 2016, he was interviewed by Tamsier Joof for Seereer Radio : The Voice of the Seereer Community's Cosaan Seereer Show, where he delved deeper into his childhood, long career, inspirations, and struggles as an artist. See link below for the interview.

During the 2022 release of Seereer Heritage's single "Ceereer ne ino mbogun" - sang by twenty four of Senegal's notable Seereer artists, Babou Ngom and fellow master drummer Omar Thiam were scheduled to play the drums by Tamsier. Unfortunately, Babou was very ill at the time, hence why Tamsier and his team at Seereer Heritage decided to go with Omar Thiam and fellow master drummer Babacar Ndiaye. For few years now, we have been aware of his illness and have worked behind the scenes to get him treated, but he sadly lost the fight with his illness.

He has done so much for the advancement of Seereer and Senegambian culture, and will be greatly missed. He was a beautiful human being who was always kind, generous with his time and knowledge, and worked very hard to advance Seereer culture and traditions. He was very direct, but always with finesse and a great sense of humour. Gandiaye has lost one of its greatest sons, and he will be surely missed.

On behalf of the Seereer Resource Centre, Seereer Radio, Seereer Heritage, our respective teams, and the Seereer artistic community, we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Goling!
