Film recommendation: Parallel Mother’s (dir. Pedro Almodovar, 2021)

Two women coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn’t regret it and is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatised. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in those hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and becomes complicated, changing their lives in a decisive way.

Lost films by

Most from the silent era are lost. Statistics estimate that 75-90% of films produced before 1930 have vanished. As the talkies took over, no one imagined would be of interest anymore. Reels of were missplaced, destroyed or junked due to neglect, fires or simply a lack of funds, as went bust or couldn’t afford to maintain their unprofitable – or burnt down cellulose nitrate prints to mine the small amounts of silver they contained.

Sadly, the silent period was a time when more women were involved in the of films.

Cinema was yet to be heralded as an art form. Before the hierarchy of the studios was constructed, was a cottage industry where job roles were fluid and it was far easier for women to find work in various positions . Thinking about the number of lost films directed by makes you wonder: if more silent films by filmmakers had survived, would our impression of film history be different?

Women in the Crypto Art Sphere

In an article written for Vogue Marris Adikwu speaks on how women are the carving out their own space in the NFT market.
Currently, research shows that women make up only about 15% of crypto users.
“It seems that women are having a hard time being represented and valorized
across the NFT landscape.” Alycia Rainaud

Historically, opportunities in tech have been kept from women. However, as more artists begin to transition into the NFT industry, women are creating communities to advocate for gender inclusivity by amplifying and promoting art by artists who identify as women, including (Alycia Rainaud), .kim and GiselXFlorez ().

WOMEN IN FILM:
The pioneering director Alice Guy-Blaché who was erased from film-making history!

In 1895 the Lumière brothers presented the first public demonstration of their new invention, the early motion-picture camera and projector called Le cinématographe. Among those invited were Alice Guy-Blaché, who believed she could use film to tell stories. She later wrote, directed and produced one of the first narrative films ever made, The Cabbage Fairy (1896). Alice was one of the first to utilise many film techniques including close-ups, hand tinted colour and synchronised sound.

She began as in-house film-maker for France’s Gaumont pictures, where she did everything; producing, writing, directing, casting and set design. She then moved to the US and founded her own studio, Solax. She made more than 1,000 films, including comedies, westerns and dramas, many of which put women to fore. Her 1906 film The Consequences of Feminism imagines a world where gender roles are reversed: men sew and iron at home while the women smoke and fight.
Despite all these achievements she faded into obscurity. In a relatively new documentary, Be Natural: the Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché, Pamela B Green investigates the full scope of the life and work of cinema's first female director.

This is our first conversation, speaking with the very talented Cinzia Angelini.

For part 1 of this Q&A with Cinzia, we have focused on her newest project Mila.

She speaks about how she came to make Mila, the music created for the film by Flavio Gargano and some of the best moments she experienced while working on the project.

This animated short film is the story of a little girl named Mila. After the Trento bombing in Italy 1943, the film focuses on the collateral damage affecting the civilian population, and especially the children.

In coming weeks our conversation will continue into a wider discussion about Cinzia’s experiences as an Italian women in the industry and her approach to story telling. Hold tight!

In a study written by Charlotte Caves and Dr Robin Basu-Roy on Mental Health and film, a study was performed showing how ‘Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘Inside Out’ were used to teach young children mental health in schools !

“Mental health disorders can be a burden on both patients and the National Health Service. With the majority of lifetime mental health problems emerging in childhood and the prevalence of childhood mental illness increasing, the need for effective mental health education is more important than ever before. This project explores a novel educational concept: ‘edutainment’, to see if it has use in mental health education.”

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK!

Mental health awareness is more important than ever...
For all of us who are in the UK, we find ourselves in a strange liminal space as we emerge out of lockdown and move back into a semi-normal reality, where shops and pubs are open and some of us are able to go back to the office a couple days a week! However, when it comes to our mental health we are still recovering from this big shock to the system!
Film and television have become a real comfort blanket for many, so to acknowledge this time here are a few suggestions to watch that touch on issues surrounding mental health:

I, Daniel Blake (dir. Ken Loach, 2016), Beautiful Boy (dir. Felix Van Groeningen, 2018), Soul (dir. Pete Docter, Kemp Powers, 2020), Three colours - Blue (dir. Krzysztof Kieślowski, 1993) and Girl, Interrupted (dir. James Mangold, 1999).

Check out Mitya Savelau's latest article for Dazed and Confused Magazine about our film Make Me A King!

“Commercial success for drag kings hasn’t reached the scale that would yet compare to drag queendom. In fact, there have also been no fictional films made about any contemporary performers – never mind about historical figures, artists who have long been shaping a drag form that women, non-binary, and gender diverse people engage in. Plus those of Yiddish background.” Click the link here and have a read: https://bit.ly/3nZ2NtS
