Artistic Jihad

Artistic Jihad Artistic Jihad is a Muslim community art project designed to promote, network and cultivate a generation of Muslim creatives And so, we founded Artistic Jihad.

Artistic Jihad
--
Jihad, literally meaning ‘struggle’, is a widely misunderstood and derided concept. Its usage has almost become profane and inflammatory and has shown little signs of abating. However just as the English flag needs to be reclaimed from the far-right fascists of the EDL, the Muslim community needs to reassert its influence on Islamic terminology. The struggles of aspiring Muslim a

rtists are many, from having to defend their faith, embrace new identities, promote positive narratives, overcome a community prejudice towards arts, or to simply try and get onto the career ladder. The cry of the Muslim artist’s struggle could not go unanswered.

MOCAfest is launching its first MOCAfellows programme that is now a core component of the existing festival. The fellowship starts with three days of creative business and professional development workshops created especially for artists. Following this, the fellows will join the festival artists for three days of MOCAfest, including time to collaborate and create together with featured artists. The end goal is to give artists the key skills they need in order to plan and launch successful careers as artists as well as learn from other artists and arts professionals. Artists will also have the opportunity to perform, present and exhibit their work at MOCAfest.

Waqas Khan: Jameel prize 3

Waqas Khan was born in Akhtarabad, Pakistan. Having trained in the miniature style, he is skilled in the delicate art of printmaking. Using small and precise marks on paper, he creates forms and shapes that seem to extend into infinity. At his studio in Lahore, Khan describes the painstaking process that enables him to create works that evolve from simple dots into patterns and compositions. His drawings are built up from ideas and concepts obtained from Muslim, Hindu and Sufi traditions.
