Journalists tell stories from a variety of locations – on the ocean, atop a mountain and on dry and dusty terrain. Climate change is increasingly making their working conditions hostile, forcing them to adapt quickly and think creatively.

This month, we hear from three OWM filmmakers working in different parts of the world – India, the Philippines, and Uganda. These are their experiences of how the weather disrupted filming plans and the solutions they came up with.

This month, hear from Sapho Wulana. After spending her early years in a township in South Africa where filmmaking is not a mainstream career option, Sapho is bringing the medium to the community through a school aimed at young filmmakers. As part of the Fellowship, Sapho will be working on a participatory documentary with young people from the township on an untitled project exploring their lives through film.

Last week, ahead of the One World Media Awards, we brought together journalists, filmmakers, tech experts, lawyers, policy makers, academics and NGOs from across the world to discuss the impact of AI on the global south.

Our Media Freedom Lab, which was made up of two panel discussions and lightning presentations, provided an opportunity for attendees to engage in discussions on how the rapid technological change was being experienced by different groups and the innovative use of AI in documentaries and projects.

One of the biggest take-away points was that whilst there are undoubtedly advantages for journalists and filmmakers, the divide between how AI was being developed, used and received in the global south and global north risks creating cultural apartheid. There was consensus that more ethical practices need to be considered when thinking about the impact of AI in different countries.

Here are 5 key ideas for building more ethical principles into AI

The exhibition, which features works from eight photojournalists from around the world, focuses on the experiences of forcibly displaced individuals from countries where press freedoms have been curtailed. These journalists reveal that amidst the despair of separation, there is also resilience and hope.
