Images of unsold inventory, with garments piled high like those that end up in landfills, are mostly associated with fast fashion brands, known for their high-volume goods. However, luxury brands face similar issues of excess stock, especially in times of weakened consumer demand.

Luxury brands often employ discreet and strategic methods to offload inventory in a bid to maintain brand image and exclusivity. Destroying unsold stock has been a longstanding and controversial issue, with brands stating they are phasing out the practice due to its negative environmental impact and ethical considerations.

Luxury brands have learned to manage excess inventory discreetly, minimising the potential negative impact on their brand perception.

In September Adidas unveiled its Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, a sneaker weighing just 138 grams, marking it the company’s lightest and most innovative racing shoe to date. For all its lightness, a price of 500 USD matched its unique proposition.

December 15th will mark the second release date of the shoe, where its revolutionary lightness opens avenues for enhanced speed. The official Christmas dress code for 2023 is set to be festive pyjamas, according to data from Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) provider Clearpay.

In a survey involving 2002 Brits, the research delves into Christmas Day attire, uncovering that 37 percent prefer not to dress up and instead opt for festive loungewear, signaling a trend toward a more convenient and personalised holiday season.

Furthermore, the survey indicates that 11 percent of respondents purchased their festive loungewear ahead of the holidays. Sales data also discloses a noteworthy 50 percent increase in festive pyjama sales before December, compared to the same period last year.

In addition, Clearpay's data highlights a 122 percent year-on-year surge in sequin dress sales, a 282 percent increase in purchases of metallic heels, and a 212 percent jump in sales of velvet trousers for Christmas parties in 2023.

The research also unveils insights into UK festive traditions and changing gift-giving dynamics in 2023. The study reveals that 95 percent of Brits strongly safeguard family Christmas traditions, such as watching the King's Speech. Surprisingly, the research indicates a shift in gift priorities, with Brits putting more thought into presents for their pets than for partners or family members.

Two standout companies from Fashinnovation's 9th Worldwide Talks in September are determined to show us the value of what we already have. One works to ensure all discarded clothes are recycled, the other strives to make sure all unsold clothes get worn. The result is that neither old nor new clothing will end up in landfill, not on their watch. Milan Daniels, co-founder and CCO of Otrium, a company that sells unsold, excess inventory from brands, (the tags are still on the items), earned the accolade of the "most innovative of 2022" from Fast Company and raised 120 million dollars ahead of Otrium's US launch. Uddhav Bagrodia, President and co-founder of Wastewear Inc. takes clothing at the end of its life cycle, breaks it down to fiber and creates new clothing without using any dyes or pollutants, thereby forcing our industry to question the need for Pantone color standards. FashionUnited interviewed Daniels and Bagrodia about their individual approaches to lengthening the life cycle of fashion.

Originally introduced during the 1980s, the New Balance T500 is an all but forgotten tennis shoe from the footwear brand’s past. But thanks to Aimé Leon Dore, that’ll no longer be the case, as they’re integrating the model into their Fall/Winter 2023 collection. Essentially providing the sneaker the same treatment as the 550 — another classic brought out of the archive with help from Teddy Santis and company — Aimé Leon Dore has prepared the T500 in three collaborative colorways. Retaining the simple, straightforward look typical of tennis shoes from the above-mentioned era, the trio features a white leather base and subtle cream finish across their midsoles. The pairs then dress their heel tabs, lining, and branding in either red, green, or blue.

Throughout the Summer, New Balance dressed the 9060 in a few, suede-constructed colorways. This is evidently set to continue into the Fall, as the brand is about to add a “Washed Burgundy” pair to the unofficial collection. Borrowing the exact color blocking of its green and yellow-colored counterparts, this New Balance 9060 features “Washed Burgundy” across every instance of suede paneling. And whereas the mesh along the lateral side follows suit, the inserts opposite opt for a soft, light cream finish. This plays complement to many of the adjacent accents — such as the “N” logo, sole unit, lace unit, and lining — which often pair the exact same shade with brighter whites.

Two iconic institutions on opposite coasts of the Pacific have convened in the AAPE by A Bathing Ape x Vans collection, bringing the signature Ape Camo pattern to Vans’ electrifying Bolt iterations of its classics. Dropping in both the Sk8-Hi and Authentic, this capsule is continues their longstanding partnership, with the AAPE sub-label taking the helm.

This Vans Sk8-Hi bolt sees classic suede overlays in two-toned grey, with the signature Snow Camo graphic adorning the canvas portion of the upper. A frigid blue jazz stripe sits right above the lightning bolt detailing that rises above the vulcanized midsole, which also reads “apes and planet earth”. The Authentic follows a similar formula, with suede toes matches with the patterned fabric.

Both the Sk8-Hi and Authentic Bolt will arrive in grey snow camo and in olive; these are set to drop soon at Vans retailers globally, and are currently available at Up There in Australia.

Iconized alongside the completion of Michael Jordan’s first three-peat championship, the Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” has appeared in official imagery ahead of the pair’s release at the tail end of September.

Capping off the banner’s Fall release schedule, Jordan Brand is celebrating the 30th anniversary of MJ’s eighth signature silhouette by returning the model to its OG 1993 specifications. Premium jet-black nubuck, chenille branding and graphic liners inject the silhouette with nostalgia while the sidewall graphic makes its first return since 2013. Bright red hits illuminate the heel tab and stitched #23 of the shroud selectively as concord blue accents grace the tip of the tread.

The Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” will release in full family sizing on September 30th for a retail price of $210. In the meantime, the retro pair can be seen below in official images alongside our accompanying store list (GS, PS, TD sizes shown).
