Without a doubt, our most ambitious project to date:

A music video… in Excel !

Last week, ‘Spreadbeats’ saw a spectacularly surreal surplus of awards at International Festival of Creativity. It is with ceasless joy and gratiude that we get to say ‘The Spreadbeats Family’ took home the most (9) awards of the Festival:
- 1 GRAND PRIX (Technological Achievement in Digital Craft)
- 2 Gold (Motion Graphics Design & Animation, Mailing/Programmatic Mail)
- 3 Silver (Craft in B2B, Consumer Services/Business to Business)
- 3 Bronze (Data Visualisation, Innovative use of Content, Video/Moving Image)
- AND a Titanium shortlist!

The leaf shaped cherry on the cake was a Palme d’Or for Uncharted Limbo, for being the production company that obtained the most points for winning and shortlisted entries!

It’s all going to take a while to sink in.

Put simply, we made a music video, coded , delivered and experienced entirely in an Excel spreadsheet, no fakery! And the “we” in question, is the trailblazing creative team , the animation gurus & the unequivocally brave client team Spotify Advertising.

For now it’s onto the next ‘impossible’ idea 🙏

Within the celestial expanse of the dome, audiences are transported into the intricate tapestry of this digital entity’s existence.
This organism, an embodiment of the mysterious slime mold’s essence, grapples with an existential conundrum —an elegant struggle between its innermost yearnings and the relentless forces that act upon it from its environment.
As we developed this procedural system to generate life, thrive and propagate, but also wither and die, we systematically came across unique moments of unexpectedness where different combinations of rules resulted in truly emergent behaviors.
We always like to think of our digital worlds as creative playgrounds of discovery where digital entities display agency rather than obedience. There is so much more to explore here and we’re just getting started!

One of the mindblowing moments we found during our international R&D funded by Wales Arts International - Celfyddydau Rhyngwladol Cymru

For me, I’ve always been fascinated in the possibility of the future, and so working with AI realtime tech whilst being away on this project has been pretty exciting. The work began to be littered with references about the universe, as well as large life questions of how humans dialogue with technology and those things far beyond us. We worked with visual projection, coded to evolve fluidly in realtime, whilst it watched movement live and reacted in the moment. Beyond the technicalities and underneath it all, there was also something quite beautiful about a boy just dancing with the sky and with thanks to Planetarium Hamburg for hosting us, we were able to begin realising that vision and those ideas.

The entire process has been an incredibly exciting propellor into to a new journey, taking artists from Wales into Europe and thinking widely about the space for possibility. All of this has been made possible by the visionary connection to George Adamopoulos and Uncharted Limbo for their creative input and technical ingenuity.

What a privilege and a pleasure to begin birthing something new, whilst looking powerfully to a sky full of wonder 💫

It was a pleasure to spend a week with Jack Philp Dance and Tom O'Gorman, building and breaking the laws of our own universe under the dome of Planetarium Hamburg, experimenting with how a single human body can influence an entire cosmos!

SOUND ON PLEASE !

The latest entry in our series of audio-visual experiments
"The Sound of Digital Matter"
with the incredible musician & sound designer Elias Aronidis !
Using our bespoke algorithm for real-time light path generation, originally developed for our collaboration with Welsh choreographer Jack Philp for his OPTONANO performance, Elias explored this digital microcosm searching for the sound of light ! ☄️
Each light shaft is mapped to a different sinewave, pushed through a bitcrusher, a pitch shifter and a modulation delay, in order to capture the numerous qualities of the 1 million rays as they reflect, refract, disperse and diffuse through an animated, curvy prism.
Programmed in Unity game engine.
Rendered in real-time at 30fps (1.000.000 rays, 16 bounces per ray)
Making use of NVIDIA RTX technology for GPU-accelerated ray intersections.

2022-2023 has been an amazing year for our Collective!

After 1.5 year of doing evening rehearsals and coding at 3:00am, we all quit our day jobs last May, to entirely focus our creative strengths on our passion project!

Last month, our work travelled to the home-town of our founders, Athens, as part of the Athens Digital Arts Festival.

It was a great opportunity to share with old and new friends the work we have been doing for 2 years as Uncharted Limbo Collective https://www.instagram.com/ulcollective/ , in the amazing screen of Astor Cinema !

We were proud to present our first work from distant 2020,

Chaotic Body I: Strange Attractor,

a short video in collaboration with pioneering choreographer Alexander Whitley Dance Company & analog electronic music composer Qasim Naqvi,

which explores the aesthetics of chaos theory mathematics, observing a dancer without a body as they choreographically converse with past and future versions of themselves.

Hard to believe that we got to see our first live work on the stage of so many incredible performances, in collaboration with the visionary choreographer Alexander Whitley Dance Company!
