Laura and Dave go head-to-head with an AI trained to interpret dreams using Freudian and Jungian perspectives. Who (or what) comes up with the most meaningful interpretations? You decide!
Elswhere is a dream journaling app that offers interpretations powered by a GPT (generative pre-trained transformer), otherwise known as a generative AI. Kelly Bulkeley and Sheldon Juncker have been instrumental in creating and training Elsewhere to interpret dreams, and they come aboard the Dream Boat to discuss the intersection of technology and dreaming, specifically the use of AI in dream interpretation.

Series 3, Episode 9 – Q&A
In this episode, Laura and Dave answer more of your questions. Questions like, why do certain things enter our dreams but not others? Or, what do shoes symbolise? They also delve into the topics of prophetic and déjà vu dreaming, examining the mysterious nature of these experiences.
We love to hear your questions. They always get us thinking!
Your dreams are fascinating, too! Get in touch and tell us a dream you’d like to share.

Series 3, Episode 8 – Laurel & Hardy and a piano on the stairs – Dream Lab (B) with Damien
Moore Dream Answers to Dream Questions! A 14-year-old boy who was curious about his dreams asked two questions before going to sleep: “Can you dream in colour or in black and white?” and, “Do you need light to dream?” Laurel and Hardy helped bring answers that night, and those answers were unequivocal, funny, and meaningful, and a few decades later Damien Moore has come on the podcast to talk about that experience and some of his other fascinating dreams.
Those familiar with The Dream Boat Podcast will know that in each series we have a “Dream Lab” episode in which we invite two dreamers to share a dream that we then discuss from different angles to see how it relates to the dreamer’s life and what kind of meaning can be found in it. We always enjoy talking about those dreams, and people seem to enjoy listening to them, so for Series 3, we’re expanding the format. In the last episode we heard about Yas’s recurring dream of losing her children on the train, and its resolution.
This week Damien’s dream sparks a conversation about colour and humour in dreams, lucid dreams (Damien has had many lucid dreams) and the nature of consciousness itself. Laura and Dave explore the images and symbols of Damien’s night-time world using Freudian, Jungian and other psychological and philosophical frameworks.
As ever, whatever ideas and interpretations may be discussed, the dream always belongs to the dreamer, and Damien is a thoughtful and wise guest who has reflected deeply on his dreams.

On #internationalwomensday, we explore a mother’s recurring dream of being separated from her children, and its latest, more comforting iteration.
Who will you see as you approach the final exit?
Dreams and visions at the end of life are significant and unique, according to research done at Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo, USA. These end-of-life experiences (ELE’S) include images and experiences of those we loved who have died before us, be they parents, partners or pets. They may also be opportunities to confront and release old trauma.
Dave had the opportunity for a short interview with Dr Christopher Kerr, CEO and Chief Medical Officer at the Hospice, physician, researcher and author of Death is But a Dream, the book based on his and his team’s research on end-of-life dreams and visions. This episode includes the interview, and Laura and Dave’s discussion of the interview and the implications of the research. #dream #dreams #nightmares #psychology #research #psychotherapy #trauma #treatment

Series 3, Episode 5 – Befriend Your Nightmares, with Dr Leslie Ellis
How can your nightmare be your friend?
Dr Leslie Ellis explains why nightmares might be shouting for your attention, showing what is unmetabolised in your psyche and maybe even telling you what is needed to help that process. “The antidote is often within the dream itself,” she says. She tells us about her embodied dreamwork method for “imagining the dream forward” to discover a new way through the dream, allowing it to complete in a way that doesn’t disturb your sleep.
As part of her mission to de-mystify nightmare treatment and dreamwork in general, Dr Ellis talks to us about her long experience in working with dreams and nightmares, including her doctoral research on treating the trauma-related dreams of refugees. And she shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for the Focusing work of Eugene Gendlin.
For the Dream of the Week, she shares a delightful dream of a red fox that may or may not be as tame as it appears.

“We are engines with millions of feedback loops… And dreams are a balancing process”
We are joined by well-known U.K. Jungian analyst Dr Roderick Peters who’s been working in the field of dreams for more than 40 years.
We look at the Jungian perspective on dreaming and its symbolic world of archetypes, opposites and individual and collective consciousness. Roderick recalls a powerful dream that he had when he was aged 3 or 4 about the nature of individuation and the separation of a child’s consciousness from that of its mother. This amazing dream has stayed with him all his life and set him on the path to studying his dreams on a daily basis since childhood.
He also talks about his career as a doctor working in a sleep lab before he decided to become a Jungian psychoanalyst.
Finally, Roderick joins in with offering interpretations for this episode’s Dream of the Week, sent in from a listener who goes to a dream theatre and meets a famous actress.
For Roderick as a Jungian, dreams are where we explore “the organs of our psyche through
the archetypes.”
Dr Roderick Peters has written several books including Living With Dreams published by Andre Deutsch. He lectures and has written many interesting papers which can be found on his website. His has a therapeutic practice in London and Surrey and is a member of the
British Psychoanalytic Council.

The first new episode of 2024 dropped this morning! The warm and engaging Ryan Hurd talks to us about all things lucid dreaming and his own life in dream research, education and exploration.
“Am I dreaming?” is the question you need to answer to become lucid in your dreams, and that question will also make you question what it really means to be awake. In this episode, Dave and Laura speak with educator, author and dream researcher Ryan Hurd, who teaches graduate level courses at the University for Peace in Costa Rica and National University in California, and is the driving force behind dreamstudies.org, an essential resource for anyone interested in dreams in general and lucid dreaming in particular. Ryan is interested in consciousness studies at the intersections of ecology, spirituality and material culture. His latest work is Lucid talisman: Forgotten lore. In an open, personal, and informative conversation, Ryan tells Dave and Laura about how he started out as an archaeologist but now searches for knowledge and treasure in the depths of consciousness as revealed through dreams. He shares some of his vast knowledge on lucid dreaming, including lucid dreaming induction (learning how to have more lucid dreams) and the use of totems and the lucid talisman. In the Dream of the Week, he shares a heart-warming dream in which he and his infant son find that his home’s basement has become a huge, church-like space. #dream #dreams #nightmares #psychology #research #psychotherapy #trauma #treatment #sleep #luciddreaming #transpersonal #science #alchemy #spirituality #jung #lucid #luciddreaming #podcast #dreamwork
Series 3, Episode 2 – Melinda Powell – Living Creatively Through Lucid Dreaming
For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself. In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda’s life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world.
Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. She has published and lectured widely about dreams and lucidity, and she is writing a new book called: "Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Love, Light and Lucid Dreaming From Beyond the Grave."

Series 3, Episode 1 – Turning Nightmares into Post-Traumatic Spiritual Growth with Linda
Yael Schiller
What can you do when you wake up screaming, having revisited the harrowing scenes of a
trauma which still haunts your nightmares? Linda Yael Schiller from Boston in the USA has
developed the GAIA (Guided Active Imagination Approach) method to stop the endless cycle
of nightmares for war trauma survivors and for anyone who suffers disturbing nightmares.
We have talked about parasomnias - the official term for a variety of disturbed sleep patterns
– and nightmare treatment with other guests, and in this episode, Laura and Dave talk to
Linda about her work with PTSD and dreams, and how GAIA brings together best-practice trauma treatment and Jungian active imagination to turn PTSD into PTSG: Post-Traumatic
Spiritual Growth.
Linda’s method is systematic and clear, and has a lot in common with the Waking Dream
Process, for those who know it or have listened to our episode about it. She takes Dave
through the GAIA method in one of his dreams… listen to find out what they discover!

Series 2, Episode 9 – Dream lab is back
by popular demand!
As Dave and Laura come towards the end of the second series, they consider two listeners’ dreams through the lenses of different interpretations.
Trainee psychotherapist Kit presents her fascinating maid of honour dream, in which the most beautiful silk dress she is going to wear to the wedding of a childhood friend is stolen and worn by her father. How dare he!
Dave and Laura explore the wonderful imagery of the operation of Union, the Royal Wedding, or coniunctio, through the lenses of Jung, Freud, and the DRI’s Waking Dream technique.
We journey through gorgeous conch shells, royal blue velvet cushions in an Uber and dingy basement bars, to look at the delicate balance between masculine and feminine energy and what this means for dreamer Kit.
Then Ayurvedic doctor and osteopath Angela joins the Dream Lab to present her magnificent seven-foot Australian shaman dream. Dave and Laura accompany her on her dreamtime spiritual sojourn as the dreamer returns to the family home to meet her real-life friend and mystic teacher before she encounters a beautiful indigenous Australian hunter in the attic. She then returns to eat clams, another powerful spiritual image of pilgrimage for the dreamer, with her sister.
Dave and Laura look through the various lenses: Jung, alchemy, the elements and the amazing Waking Dream Technique to unearth interpretations. What would it be like for the dreamer to become the hunter?
And what happens when she eats the clams?
But as the lenses turn Dave rightly reminds us at the end of Dream Lab that despite these interpretative explorations the dream always belongs to the dreamer.
Enjoy!
