Container Identification System

1) Container Number – is of course the main marking on the door. It is an alpha numeric sequence made up of 4 Alphabets and 7 Numbers.

The container number identification system has been created by the International Standards Organization under their code IS06346:1995(E).

As per this code, the container identification system consists of:
Owner code – 3 letters (in this example ECM)

Equipment category – 1 letter (in our example, U denoting a freight container. Other categories being J for detachable container related equipment (such as Genset) and Z for trailers and chassis).

Serial number – 6 numbers (numbers ONLY)

Check Digit – 1 number (numbers ONLY)

The owner code is unique to the owner of the container and the registration of this code rests with Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal (BIC).

This is to avoid any duplication of code by any shipping line or container operator.
To find the owner of a container, you can always do a BIC Code Search to identify the rightful owner.

However, the owner of the container need not necessarily be operating the container as they could have leased the container to another operator or shipping line.

2) Check Digit – although it is part of the full container number, the check digit is an important number as it can be used to identify if the above mentioned identification sequence is valid or invalid.
For example, if you go to BIC’s Check Digit Calculator and type in the prefix – ECMU and the numbers 465749, see what you get as the Check Digit. It should come up as “6”.

3) Container Owner or Lessor – This is the entity that owns or operates the container. This could be a shipping line, like in this example (CMA CGM Group) or a container leasing company such as SeaCo who’s business is to lease containers to shipping lines that need to increase their inventory but not their assets.

4) Weights and Dimensions – In this example – 30,480 KG is the maximum weight that the container can carry including its own tare weight of 3,720 KG or 8,200 LB. This is the weight that the SOLAS VGM Certificate must show. In addition, CU. CAP. is short for cubic capacity, the volume of the container in cubic meters.

5) ISO Code – As per the International Standards Organization under their code IS06346:1995(E), each container is given a unique ISO Code in order to avoid any ambiguity in naming the container.
For example a standard 20′ container is called Dry Van (DV), General Purpose (GP), Standard (SD), Normal, Dry Container (DC) in different countries.

As these terms are all different, these terms cannot be used in uniform systems that are used for transmission of data across ports, customs, shipping lines etc. Therefore as a standard, the ISO code of 42G1 (in the example) is used to denote that the container in question is a 40′ container with a tare weight of 3,720 KG.

Don't force yourself to learn quickly. You need to take your time so that the information sticks in your mind. Trying hard to learn quickly is exhausting, and the results you get are, most of the time, unsatisfactory. So take enough time to learn, don't exhaust yourself for nothing. Learn on your own pace, according to your abilities. With time and strategic practice, you will, for sure, become better than before. When you look around you, you may find other people who have this ability of learning just so fast. This may make you feel sad about yourself, thinking that you are not good enough to learn. But, that's not true. You are enough. If other people perform tasks quickly, keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with you. They have that ability. The good news is: you can have that too. What you lack now is experience. Once you have it, you will be able to learn fast as well. But, in order to gain experience, you first need to work and learn step by step, little by little, and according to your abilities. Here's one thing I want you to always remember: it is better that things go slow and strong rather than fast and fragile.

It is very important to understand that people have different abilities. Every person is different and unique. We don't have the same qualities, we don't have the same qualifications, and we don't have the same interests. We have different minds. That's why you don't have to be frustrated when you don't learn as quickly as somebody else does. You don't have to catch up with everyone. You just have to do what you can, and I guarantee you that you will succeed. Don't try to outwork everyone. Don't try to outrun everyone. You don't have to be the first. Don't try to be in competition with everyone. Instead, be in competition with yourself -- yourself only. Everyday, try to become better than the person you were the day before, because that's what really matters. Focus and work on yourself, and stop wasting your precious time trying to reason out why this or that person is learning or doing this or that thing.

Hi, all of my Facebook friends, as one of a teacher in none native English speakers. I think students should be well practice in speaking English more than these days. The reason that because of nowadays we can communicate easily even we are living far away. Many countries use English as a second language but students still use it less and less. So I don't know how do you solve this problem in your country? Should we hire native English speakers teachers to teach in every school? Or should we ask all teachers in the country to speak English with students in every subject? Anyone have a good idea please let us know. Love you all. Thank you.

4 simple tips you can apply today to improve your English:

1 Get yourself a good dictionary. By a good dictionary I mean an English-English dictionary. Every day, you will encounter new words. To explain and know their meaning you need a dictionary. Dictionaries also include the phonetic transcription of words. This phonetic transcription, if you know the IPA, shows you exactly how to pronounce any word. So, a dictionary will not only help you find the meaning of new words, but also it will help you learn the correct pronunciation of those words.

2 Make sure that you learn something new every day. If you want to have a good level in English, you have to be consistent in learning. This means that you have to make sure that you are getting new input every day because learning a language is a lifelong process. If you stop learning, you will plateau. One way you can avoid that is to try to learn something new every day. It can be new words, a grammar point, an idiom or expression...etc.

3 Watch at least one video per a day. If you find learning English through reading textbooks boring, videos are another alternative to improve your English. This points out to the importance of recognizing your learning style. This basically means that when you don't learn much through a certain a method, then it is not for you and it doesn't suit your learning style. Thus, you need to change it and find a better one. Watching videos, however, seems to work and suit almost everyone, especially now that we are living in a digital world.

4 Speak a little English every day and focus on your pronunciation. Consider attending an English class or a discussion group. Listen to English on the radio or TV, and be sure to read and write as well. Train yourself to think in English and don't be afraid of making mistakes. You know, as it is always said: from mistakes we learn. Practice, practice, and practice. If you don't practice, don't expect to speak English well.

Having a native-like accent is not that important. What maters is to be able to pronounce words correctly and make your message understood. Your accent does not have to be perfect, and if you are too obsessed with perfecting your accent, then you are putting a lot of pressure and unnecessary burden on yourself. When your interlocutor understands you, there's nothing more important than that. If you understand each other, that's the objective. One thing you should be aware of is that your accent will always be influenced by your mother tongue. So, having a one hundred percent native-like accent is nearly impossible, which is totally OK. However, this doesn't mean that you don't have to work on the way you speak at all. The idea being is that you don't have to worry too much about your accent and that having a perfect accent should not be your most important goal. Your main goal should be having a good level at using the language and doing so with a good and clear pronunciation. Once you master these things and once you have control over grammar, vocabulary, and correct pronunciation, then you can work on perfecting your accent, which is not necessary. Once again, if you want to have a better accent or you want to sound more like a native speaker, you can work on that after having mastered the language itself: correct pronunciation and good command over grammar and vocabulary.

3 important tips to learn a new language successfully:

1 Learn the basics first. You cannot learn a language without knowing its basics unless you live in an environment where this language is used all the time. But in most cases, it is difficult to find such environment. If you want to build a house, you need to start with a strong base. That's because everything will be built on that base, and so if the base is not strong enough, then everything will fall apart-- the whole stuff will come down. The same principle should be applied when learning a new language; you need to have your base strongly and correctly built.

2 Don't skip any level. Learning any language is a step-by-step process. You may think that starting with difficult and complex lessons will help you learn faster. But I assure you and guarantee you that it doesn't help. It is just a waste of time. Our minds are designed to learn things in order. I see many people trying hard to learn English, but they find it difficult, that's because learning a new language requires learning in order, step by step, level by level.

3 Keep it simple. Learning a whole new language can be overwhelming if you are not careful with what you learn and how you learn. You don't have to know all the English vocabulary. You don't have to learn all the idioms or the phrasal verbs that English has. Don't force yourself to learn things that you may not even need. You have to keep things simple especially in the beginning. Don't try to learn so many complicated words that don't at all match with your level. Instead, try to shift your focus to the most common words and expressions that are used in daily speech of your target language.

Wondering how reading a book can help you?

Often times, new readers expect too much of themselves after the first book they read. They think that just reading one book about a certain field or discipline would make them experts, which is not realistic at all.

Reading one book once will not have much to offer. Even if the book deals with an issue exhaustively, you cannot assimilate all the content in one reading. To put it differently, the more you read the same book, especially when it deals with an issue that is multidimensional, the more you allow yourself the opportunity to discover, look at, and consider the content from various perspectives.

In this way, you are expanding your knowledge and deepening your understanding of the field you are targeting.

Reading is important, but how we do it is even of more importance.

Sometimes, because of a certain minor event, we fail to recognize the bigger picture of our life. This event, although it is minor and has little or almost no actual impact, if it is perceived as being of great impact, the result is that it leaves us with psychological scars. If we ignore the event in the first place and perceive it as being of little significance, we always become able to recognize the bigger picture of our life. What does this " the bigger picture of our life " mean? We can experience it when we recognize all the blessings we already have; it is our ability to see the positive side of things; the ability to focus on the full half of the glass rather than the empty half. Of course negative and unfair events happen, but these events can have little or almost no actual impact on us if we turn our attention to the positive side of life and ignore the negative one as much as possible. Indeed, some part of us tempts us to count and pay more attention to our problems rather than our happiness; so often we start counting our problems and weaknesses that we fail to give our happiness no consideration. The secret to live happier thus is to shift our attention from counting our problems to counting the blessings we already have. This of course doesn't mean that we should be mediocre. What it really means is to appreciate what we already have and build on it to reach what we seek to have. Much of what we experience in life - good or bad - depends on our perception of the world around us; how we perceive it has great impact on us.

As a student, can you come up with a mistake-free piece of writing?

In my humble opinion, that's quite demanding and challenging. Even when you compose a piece of writing that you would consider to be perfect, leave it for a while, come back later, and read it. You will be surprised by the fact that you failed to notice and correct many mistakes. Some of these mistakes may be silly and to which you would wonder why you did not notice them before. That's a common thing. So, there is always room for making changes and refining that piece of writing. I am not referring here only to grammar and spelling mistakes. This is not to say that these are not important. Indeed, they are the sort of mistakes you need to be more cautious about, for they can greatly affect your score. Yet, they are not the only type of mistakes you need to pay attention to while and after writing. We can extend the circle to encompass cohesion, coherence, style, unity, clarity, and many other aspects. The point here is that you should always be willing to revise and refine your first draft as much as possible, taking into consideration the situation, of course. Revising and making improvements on the first draft is what good writers do. That's something you need to bear in mind whenever writing is involved because you can never trust your first draft.

Mortimer Adler, an American philosopher, said that the path of true learning is strewn with rocks, not roses. This of course means that learning is not an easy task. I believe, we can apply and relate this view or perspective roughly to anything in our lives. Whatever endeavor we want to pursue, it requires lots of efforts to be put into it. You cannot simply want something and have it done for you without any efforts or sacrifices of different kinds. Patience, consistency, hard work, and many other things are all variables of the equation. So, my advice for everyone, myself included, who is in pursuit of a goal would be the following: believe in yourself, be patient, and always be ready to withstand the pain of whatever life may throw at you, because in overcoming that pain lies a great deal of pleasure and happiness.
