In 1941, Billy Kane, a 14 year old from Maine, was watching his favorite player, Ted Williams, have one of the greatest seasons in baseball history and decided he couldnโ€™t wait to meet him.

With no one to help him travel the 250 miles to Boston, he took matters into his own hands and hitchhiked in hopes of meeting Williams. Arriving on September 2nd, he faced the CRUSHING blow of having arrived on a Red Sox off day.

He decided that his best plan of action would be to wait at Fenway Park where the Yankees were scheduled to play the next four games.

Police officers doing a nightly patrol found Kane asleep in one of the aisles and the trespasser was taken to the local precinct where he told his story to a number of amused officers, a few of whom went to the nearby Shelton Hotel, where Williams was about to settle into bed for the night.

They told him of his dedicated young fan, which was enough for him to get dressed and go visit him at the police station. After meeting with the incredulous boy, he invited him to be his personal guest at the game the next day. The story was immediately picked up by the press and became a wide spread story.

"I've seen this guy at Starbucks in Marin City several times. Every time Iโ€™d see him I'd tell myself that I would take him to lunch but always found an excuse not to. Today was different. It might have been selfish but I was lonely. I didn't want to spend the whole day alone. I walked up to him, put my hand on his shoulder and said 'do you want to have lunch with me?'
Tarec Atkinson was born and raised in Jamaica. When he was a kid, he dreamt of being a famous football (soccer) player. He was recruited to play in school but never got the opportunity because of some trouble he got in as a teenager. He moved to the states 8 years ago and has spent the last 12 months living in a tent by the side of the freeway. Tarec goes days without eating, sometimes living off of the berries he picks, he spends 90% of his time alone and has no friends and no family in the states. After hearing it had been a month since he bathed, I brought him back to my apartment so he could enjoy a hot shower. Because of all these hardships, trying to get a job is impossible. How can you fill out an application when you haven't eaten in days? I told Tarec that I would drive around with him next week and help him fill out applications and even speak on his behalf to help him land a job so he can get back on his feet. We agreed to meet that Friday at 9:30 AM at Starbucks.
If we were going to make this happen, I knew we had to get Tarec some new clothes. We stopped at Ross so he could pick out a shirt and some slacks. I was blown away at the immediate change in his demeanor. His smile was radiant, he stood up straighter, and even walked with a swagger. I couldnโ€™t convince him to tuck in his shirt. I guess you win some and you lose some haha. Next step was to hit the streets. We spent the next two days going door to door to see who was hiring. We went to Walgreens, CVS, Safeway, Home Depot, Molly Stones, and Starbucks just to name a few. I would walk in with him so he knew he wasnโ€™t alone. It can be overwhelming to walk into a business and ask for a job. I was very proud of him. We had a few positive responses but the majority of businessโ€™s told us that applications were submitted online. Easy enough right? Wrong.
Tarec doesnโ€™t have a computer. So we went to the local library and began filling out applications. And let me tell you something. We take our computer literacy for granted. Watching him struggle to fill out an application put so much into perspective for me. Some people judge our homeless. Weโ€™ve all heard someone say 'why donโ€™t they just get a job?' or 'theyโ€™re lazy' I saw firsthand how the โ€œsystemโ€ is set up to fail people like Tarec. There is no way he would have been able to do any of this without my help. Just like there are many things in my life I have needed someone to help me overcome an obstacle. We all need a little help.
After week of phone interviews Tarec landed an in person interview at Safeway. I remember driving to Safeway being nervous. I looked over to him and asked how he was feeling. He looked back at me and said โ€œI got thisโ€. I believed him. I dropped him off, wished him luck and waited. 20 minutes later, I see him walk out of Safeway with a big smile and a thumbs up. I let out a Rick Flair sounding โ€œWOO!โ€. We had accomplished a lot together in two weeks. It was an incredible moment. Obviously we had to celebrate with a little ice cream! ๐Ÿ™‚
Like we all are, Tarec is searching for a purpose in life. He yearns for happiness. He craves for a woman to love and to feel the love from a woman. He wants to create a better life for himself so he could one day have a family and stability. He is just like you and me. My hope in sharing this story is that it will inspire others to spread LOVE. We all need help in one way or another. Sometimes all someone needs is a friend. Thank you for taking the time to read my story."

A 'TEACHER' teaching Maths to a six-year-old asked him, โ€œIf I give you one apple and one apple & one apple, how many apples will you have?โ€

With a few seconds the boy replied confidently, โ€œFour!โ€

The dismayed teacher was expecting an effortless correct answer (three).

She was disappointed. โ€œMay be the child did not listen properly,โ€ she thought.

She repeated, โ€œpls listen carefully.

It is very simple. You will be able to do it right if you listen carefully.

If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?โ€

The boy had seen the disappointment on his teacherโ€™s face.

He calculated again on his fingers.

But within him he was also searching for the answer that will make his teacher happy.

This time hesitatingly he replied, โ€œFour...โ€

The disappointment stayed on teacherโ€™s face.

She remembered that the boy loves strawberries.

She thought maybe he doesnโ€™t like apples and that is making him lose focus.

This time with exaggerated excitement & twinkling eyes she asked ...

โ€œIf I give you one strawberry & one strawberry & one strawberry, then how many will you have?โ€

Seeing the teacher happy, the 'YOUNG' boy calculated on his fingers again.

There was no pressure on him, but a little on the teacher.

She wanted her new approach to succeed.

With a hesitating smile, the young boy replied, โ€œThree?โ€

The teacher now had a victorious smile. Her approach had succeeded.

She wanted to congratulate herself.

But one last thing remained.

Once again she asked him, โ€œNow if I give you one apple and one apple and one more apple how many will you have?โ€

Promptly the answer was โ€œFour!โ€

The teacher was aghast.

โ€œHow.... tell me, How?โ€ she demanded in a little stern and irritated voice.

In a voice that was low and hesitating young boy replied, โ€œBecause I already have one apple in my bag.โ€

Moral of the Story

Lessons to Learn: When someone gives you an answer that is different from what you are expecting, it is not necessarily they are wrong.

There may be an angle that we may not have understood at all.

We need to learn to appreciate and understand different perspectives.

Quite often, we try and impose our perspectives on others and then wonder what went wrong.

The next time someone gives you a different perspective than yours, sit down and gently ask
"can you please help me understand"?

"A Lady asked an old street vendor: "How much do you sell your eggs for?" The old man replied "0.50ยข an egg, madam.โ€ The Lady responde, โ€œI'll take 6 eggs for $2.00 or I'm leaving.โ€ The old salesman replied, โ€œBuy them at the price you want, Madam. This is a good start for me because I haven't sold a single egg today and I need this to live.โ€

She bought her eggs at a bargain price and left with the feeling that she had won. She got into her fancy car and went to a fancy restaurant with her friend. She and her friend ordered what they wanted. They ate a little and left a lot of what they had asked for. So they paid the bill, which was $150. The ladies gave $200 and told the fancy restaurant owner to keep the change as a tip.

This story might seem quite normal to the owner of the fancy restaurant, but very unfair to the egg seller. The question it raises is;
Why do we always need to show that we have power when we buy from the needy?
And why are we generous to those who don't even need our generosity?

We once read somewhere that a father used to buy goods from poor people at a high price, even though he didn't need the things. Sometimes he paid more for them. His children were amazed. One day they asked him "why are you doing this dad?" The father replied: "It's charity wrapped in dignity.โ€

I refrain from taking him to the beach for a walk because it disrupts your vacation; you prohibit me from renting a house if I have a dog, and he's not allowed on urban public transport. Nevertheless, I can bring him to sift through rubble after an earthquake, search for you in the forest when you're lost in the mountains without a map or GPS, join you under the snow for forbidden off-piste adventures, and even accompany you in the water despite the red flag when posted signs advise against swimming. You gladly welcome him when you need his support, but not when it's inconvenient for you. After allโ€ฆ.โ€ it is just a dogโ€โ€ฆ.
Think again, people. Dogs are better than most humans, theyโ€™re kinder, more loyal, love unconditionally and appreciate you no matter whether you deserve it or not. โค๏ธ

This is Eclipse. Every day she leaves home alone and takes the bus downtown to the dog park, where she gets a few hours of exercise and makes friends, and then she takes the bus home again. She even has her own bus pass attached to her collar. It started when her owner, Jeff Young, was taking too long when the bus came, so she impatiently ran ahead and got on the bus herself. The bus driver recognized her and dropped her off at the dog park, and later Jeff picked her up. After a few more rides on her own, Jeff started letting her ride by herself, and she always comes home a few hours later. All the bus riders know her and she makes them smile, and many of the regular passengers are happy to see her every day and often sit next to her. Even the police have given their approval, as long as the bus drivers are okay with the arrangement. "She makes everyone happy."

"Iโ€™m so proud of my son.
He saw a kid, whose name I now know is Conner, balled up into a corner, crying. So, he went to console him, grabbed his hand, and walked him inside of the school!
What we didn't know was that he was autistic. His mother fears every day that someone will laugh at him because he doesn't speak correctly. Laugh at him because he doesn't sit still or because he jumps up and down and flaps his hands.
It is an honor to raise such a loving, compassionate
child. Heโ€™s a kid with a big heart. The first day of school started off right.
Conner's reaction?
'He was so kind to me. I started crying and then he helped me. I was so happy! He found me and held my hand and I got happy tears.'
It doesn't matter, you know, color. It doesn't matter, gender. It doesn't matter, disability. Just be kind. Open your heart. Thatโ€™s what we need in this world. One act of kindness can change someone's life."

โ€œShe would have been 7 years old on Feb 27. I rescued her when she was 2 days old. She had been released several times and always stayed close to home. she came back to give birth to her babies. Watching her delivery and raising her kits was the most amazing experience I have ever had being a rehabber. She was a fighter, she survived distemper, she was poisoned, several different attacks in the wild. The distemper left her with neurological issues, that point she was deemed non-releasable. She has been indoors with me for almost 5 years now. Her and I have been so much together. We both dependent on each other she could make it without me and I couldn't make it without her. The bond that her and I developed with each other was like no other that I've ever experienced. NAWTY fell asleep on my chest her last night and when I woke up she was still laying on my chest she looked up at me and licked my chin once then took a few deep breaths and she was gone. My heart is hurting so bad. I am totally lost without her. She was my soulmate there's no words that can describe how much I loved her. Thank you for accepting me into this group. And I'm sending my heartfelt condolences to all that have lost their love. Many blessings to you all.

A resident of Hamnavoe, Shetland Islands in Scotland, Anne Eunson decided to knit herself a beautiful lace fence using twine. The fence is fashioned from strong black twine - the same kind that is used to make fishing nets - and Anne knitted it on specially adapted curtain rods. It took her about three weeks to knit enough lace to surround her front garden, using a 23-stitch repeat of a familiar Shetland lace pattern.

This guy sees two kids walking in the pouring rain while one is pushing his broken bicycle and he stops everything he is doing and spends 5 minutes getting drenched with rain while he fixes this little boyโ€™s bike. These kids rode off so happy and he left with a smile on his face from ear to ear. As a matter of fact, he put a smile on my face too. This is the America that I know. High five to you good sir!

02/10/2024

"When my mom was cleaning out her house over 23 years ago to sell it, I wasn't very sympathetic over her attachments to things. I would go over on weekends to help her, and we would go through things...things for a yard sale, things to donate, things to throw away. I would usually get upset over how long it was taking her to decide. For instance, we were going through kitchen cabinets, and she spent 20 minutes looking at a black iron kettle with a lid. Finally, I said,
โ€œMom, at this rate it is going to take us another 2 years.โ€
She told me that her mother used to make meals in that kettle and leave them at the doorsteps of neighbors during the Depression. Mom would deliver them, and then they would reappear back on her porch with an apron or a wood carving; something in return for the meal. I realized that everything that my mom was going through was really a reliving of her life.
If you are reading this and are under the age of 60, you won't get it. You haven't lived long enough. Most of you have not had to move your parents into a nursing home, or broken up their home. You haven't lived long enough to realize that the hours you spend picking out the right cabinets, or the perfect tile will not be what matters in the later years. It will be the handmade toothbrush holder or a picture that you took on vacation.
So, if your parents are downsizing, and moving to smaller places, or selling a home, give your mom and even your dad a break. For those things that you don't understand why they canโ€™t just pitch, and why you think you know what needs to be tossed or saved, give them a little time to make their decisions. They are saying goodbye to their past, and realizing that they are getting ready for their end of life, while you are just beginning your life.
As I have been going through things, it is amazing just how hard it is to get rid of objects. But, life goes on, and you realize they are just things, but sometimes things comfort us. So give your parents or grandparents a break. Listen to their stories, because in 40 years, when you are going through those boxes and the memories come back, it will be hard to get rid of those reminders of precious moments that make up a life well lived.
You just don't have a clue until it happens to you, and then you will remember how you rushed them, and it will make you sad, especially if they are already gone, and you can't say, 'Iโ€™m sorry...I just didn't understand until it was too late."

02/10/2024

Let me share a story that's been weighing heavily on my heartโ€”a story about my daughter, who seems to have lost her way. Imagine this: Iโ€™m 90 years old, still living in my own home, still full of life. But my daughter, my only child, thinks itโ€™s time to tuck me away in a nursing home like Iโ€™m an old piece of furniture. She looks at me, and all she sees is my age, not the woman who gave her everything, who sacrificed and loved her unconditionally.
I told her, โ€œIf you donโ€™t want to take care of me, Iโ€™ll take care of myself.โ€ I still have my savings, and I made it clear I would use them to stay in my own home, to hire a caregiver if I needed one. Youโ€™d think I had slapped her by the way she reacted. Turns out, she had been counting on getting her hands on my money, and now that I was standing my ground, her little plan was crumbling to pieces.
Itโ€™s been more than a month since sheโ€™s visited or even called. She made sure to tell me not to bother her until Iโ€™m ready to โ€œtake my a** to a nursing home.โ€ Can you imagine that? Being 90 years old, with just one daughter, and feeling so alone. I couldnโ€™t help but wonder why God didnโ€™t bless me with another child, someone who would show me some love.
Anne, my daughter, has taken everything Iโ€™ve done for her for granted. Sheโ€™s forgotten that respect and love go both ways. So, I decided it was time to remind herโ€”time to give her the biggest lesson of her life.
I called her up, my heart heavy but resolute, and told her there were some urgent developments regarding my money. You wouldnโ€™t believe how quickly she showed up, not even waiting until the next day. That very night, she came, all confident and bossy, expecting to find me weak and desperate.
But when she walked into my living room, her face turned pale as a ghost. Standing there was a lawyer and my new caregiver, Mrs. Thompsonโ€”a kind-hearted woman with a strong sense of purpose. Anneโ€™s smirk faded as the reality of the situation hit her.
The lawyer spoke calmly, โ€œMrs. Anne, your mother has decided to take control of her assets and well-being. She has legally assigned her savings and property to be managed by a trust, with clear instructions to ensure her comfort and care without any interference.โ€
Anneโ€™s face turned red with fury. โ€œThis is ridiculous! You canโ€™t do this to me, Mother!โ€
I looked her straight in the eye and said, โ€œOh, but I can, and I have. You wanted to cast me aside and take whatโ€™s mine. Now, youโ€™ll get nothing until Iโ€™m gone, and even then, itโ€™ll be on my terms.โ€
The shock and disbelief on her face were unforgettable. She tried to argue, but the lawyer calmly explained that everything was legally sound and unchangeable. With a final slam of the door, she stormed out, her anger echoing through the halls.
For the first time in years, I felt a sense of peace and control over my life. Mrs. Thompson helped me to my favorite chair, and we sat down to enjoy a cup of tea together. I knew, deep in my heart, that I had done the right thing. My daughter needed to learn that love and respect cannot be bought or coerced. They must be earned and cherished.
As I sit here today, watching the sunset and sipping my tea, I am grateful for the strength I found within myself. I may be 90, but Iโ€™m still capable of making my own decisions, of living life on my terms. Anne and I have found a new understanding, and once again, my home is filled with love and respect.
This experience has taught me that itโ€™s never too late to stand up for yourself, to demand the respect you deserve, and to teach those around you the true meaning of love and family.

So Iโ€™m walking into Starbucks for the 2 oโ€™clock caffeine craving and Iโ€™m greeted in the lobby with this girl holding her hand up, clearly for a high 5.

It caught me off guard because I walk through that door all of the time. I give her my best athletic high 5 and she belts out, โ€œThanks for saving our lives.โ€

The lobby patrons burst into laughter, recognizing the overflowing cuteness and full smile. To say she made my year is an understatement.

I asked her name and she said, Jasmine. She said, โ€œCan I get a selfie with youโ€? Soooooo cute.

I had to take a selfie with my phone too. What a sweetie.

My fox has been coming into my back garden since March and we think he is adorable. The first few days he turned up I ignored him as, to be honest, I donโ€™t know anything about foxes except that my dog barks like mad when he sees him. And I did not want the fox to be dependent on me.
Fast forward, and he is here every evening! After the first few days, I just couldnโ€™t ignore his little face up against the glass door. It isnโ€™t easy. I have to either distract my dog, get him into the lounge or pull down the conservatory blinds.
As he is a regular now, should I be giving him any treatment such as flea or worming? I canโ€™t imagine anyone else having done that as he is here each evening without fail. I am feeding him chicken wings, a bowl of wet dog food with a Bonio biscuit and usually a raw egg. Thanks in advance for any advice.
