We had an amazing tour with our author Bachtyar Ali and translator Kareem Abdulrahman including London, Birmingham and Cardiff.
We had a great time, a wonderful, engaging audience at all the events.
We attended the three-day Kurdish Studies Conference at LSE university in London (29 and 30 April, and 1 May) where we had a round table on the 29th April about Kurdish literature in translation.
Then a very well-attended event on 2nd May, with an amazing crowd, in Birmingham, organised in collaboration with Kurdish Culture Association. We discussed Bachtyar Ali's recent novel in Kurdish, The Death of Sir Enayat, and the UK version of his novel, The Last Pomegranate Tree by Afsana Press.
Both Bachtyar Ali and Kareem Abdulrahman were in conversation with Brwa Barzinji.
Then on 3rd May, another wonderful well-attended event with the same subjects in Cardiff, organised in collaboration with Kurdish All Wales Association (KAWA).
We thank all the organisers of these events and look forward to further collaboration.
A huge thank to Brea Barzinji for also helping greatly with organising and arranging logistics for both events in Birmingham and Cardiff.
Afsana Press also especially thanks the wonderful transport company EUKnet Sters Transport who brought over several boxes of Bachtyar Ali's books from Kurdistan to us in Folkestone free of charge. A great support to Afsana Press.

Today, Afsana Press officially releases The Resurrected, a novel by renowned Dutch researcher and writer Joost Hiltermann. Partially based on true events, this novel tells the story of a genocide as remembered by some who lived through it – as victims, perpetrators, and witnesses. By weaving together their testimonies – some true, some false, others imagined – the author paints an enthralling portrait of survival and destiny under the worst of circumstances, the 1988 Anfal campaign in Iraq, and what happened afterwards. In America the survivors build protected but split-soul lives typical of first-generation immigrants – until one day the past comes calling.
The book is available for purchase from any bookshop or online retailers around the world, or via:
https://www.afsanapress.uk/product/the-resurrected/

“This unconventional, witty, harrowing, compassionate, and engaging novel tells the story of one of the great horrors of the late 20th century, the Anfal campaign against Iraqi Kurds.”
—Nathan Thrall, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Day in the Life of Abed Salama

Chief International Correspondent of the BBC, Lyse Doucet, said: “Joost Hiltermann colourfully reimagines a forgotten story that once shaped our times in an ambitious quilt of compelling tales, cleverly brought together with a novelist’s skill, a scholar’s depth, and the empathy of a journalist who lived this history.”

Co-publisher and editor at Afsana Press, Goran Baba Ali, said: “More than 15 years ago, Joost told me that he was thinking of writing a novel about the survivors of the Anfal Campaign. Then one day, a submission landed in our email inbox. There it was. The Resurrected. Joost, not knowing I was the publisher, said he was looking for and thought he might have found the ‘perfect home’ for his book in Afsana Press. It was one of those moments. I only hoped the book was well-written. How could I reject such a project? But halfway through reading the novel, I knew it was a wonderful literary work as well.”

Commented on the publication of his novel, author Joost Hiltermann said: “It was my incredible luck to find a home for my story at Afsana Press, led by my old friend Goran Baba Ali. He took a chance on me – and on the book. For the longest time, I thought I would not find a publisher for it. I could have lived with that, because mine was a labour of love, stretched out over years.”

“I wrote the book out of frustration. The Anfal campaign happened just before the end of the Cold War, and soon the horrors in Iraqi Kurdistan were overtaken in the public conscience by other world-shaking events. It is my wish that those who perished in Anfal be remembered well beyond Kurdistan. By recording and conveying the voices of those who lived I hope I’m making a small contribution to that objective,” Hiltermann added.

Afsana Press invites you to celebrate with us the publication of our new book, THE RESURRECTED by Dutch writer and researcher Joost Hiltermann on Wednesday, 22 April (6:30-8:30 pm) at the wonderful Kollectiv cultural centre in Folkestone.

The book will be officially released by Afsana Press on 5 May, and
can already be purchased via any bookshop or from our website:

This powerful work of fiction reimagines the harrowing true story of two young men who survived the Anfal genocide in Iraqi Kurdistan. Based on the author's extensive documentary research and testimonies collected during his time with Human Rights Watch (1992–1994), the novel follows their separate escapes from Saddam Hussein's killing fields and their eventual journeys to America. It is a profound story of luck, nerve, perseverance, and the complex, split-soul lives of first-generation immigrants.

According to Lyse Doucet, the BBC's Chief International Correspondent, Joost Hiltermann "colourfully reimagines a forgotten story that once shaped our times in an ambitious quilt of compelling tales, cleverly brought together with a novelist's skill, a scholar's depth, and the empathy of a journalist."

Afsana Press is proud to give this book particular attention for its significant subject and literary merits, offering a unique and innovative way of recounting the story of the Anfal and honouring the memory of its survivors.
