Reflecting on a bustling period. Following the lockdown and into the December festivities, we had an incredible shoot featuring a Christmas song with the charming Sigrid. Personally, I was thrilled (a guilty pleasure of mine) to have been involved in this project, managing numerous individual foldback mixes for live performers' in-ear monitoring alongside Darko Mocilnikar. The challenge? We were at the Euro Tunnel platform at St Pancras Station! No power outlets, no cables on the ground, and everything had to stay below two meters to avoid the overhead lines. The risk assessment was extensive. And all of this was completed within five hours. Terry Tew stepped up to the task, providing the Yamaha console and a massive portable power source. It was a hefty setup, yet the power remained stable, powering the console, eight receivers, recorders, and communications, all from a single custom-built battery and supply unit tailored for this event. Fantastic shoot, superb team, excellent facilities, and amazing talent! .org.uk

With all this talk of A.I.
Despite being a bitterly cold January at Monte Cassino, a site of a gruelling World War II siege, we were there with military historian James Holland. To film for DSP Productions on NM4, a historical documentary series, with John Templeton as the D.O.P.
Back in 2017, even though it was hard going we managed to navigate those challenging slopes with kit. Discovering remnants like ordnance, shrapnel, barbed wire, and ammunition shells still scattered after more than 80 years sparked contemplation.
Visiting and experiencing such notorious sites, one truly appreciates the immense struggle involved in both building , defending and assaulting these remote, hard-to-reach locations under the harshest conditions. Films can never fully capture this reality.
But a professional crew, experienced director and expert presenter can describe a clearer reality picture of the time, place and humanity that no AI can ever achieve.

During an exciting filming session at the Natural History Museum this summer, I embarked on a unique challenge in a newly developed Tech-enabled Research public garden. The event involved a walk and talk session with experts and an interviewer, all while being discreetly monitored by 13 hidden cameras. The challenge was to remain unnoticed throughout. We started at 5:30 am and wrapped up by 10 am, requiring meticulous planning and ex*****on.

My main focus was on ensuring top-notch audio quality and reception across the sprawling rugby pitch sized garden in the heart of bustling London. To achieve this, I utilized state-of-the-art equipment such as Wisycom MTP60s transmitters with built-in timecoded recorders, Betso-powered antennae, and a range of timecoding devices including Ultrasync Ones, Tenacles Sync and Track Es, Deity TC1s, and even the old TimeCode Buddy Systems Wifi Master and TXRX units made an appearance . Additionally, I had an Ambient Timecode slate on standby for added security.

All 13 cameras and audio recorders were perfectly synchronized and turning over smoothly by 8 am. Nestled in a discreet corner of the garden, I ensured that I had full coverage of the contributors' movements while relaying program sound via another Wisycom transmitter and Lectrosonic SMA antenna to the director and viewing station 50 meters away. This setup was facilitated by a custom cable expertly crafted by Stuart Torrence at Everything Audio.

The day was a success, with flawless sound recording and seamless operation of all equipment. This experience highlighted the importance of precision and dedication in the field of location sound recording.

An enjoyable end to the Summer for Ginger T Audio with FletcherWilson Ltd at the Roundnet 2024 World Cup at Guildford University Campus.
An International sports event involving 34 Countries, 500 plus athletes on over 5 exhibition match courts requiring audio from Live Commentary positions ; Roaming Court side Interviews; On Court Net effects mics, Medal Ceremony Stage Feeds, Wireless cameras, and Atmos to stick it all together.
What's RoundNet? Think 4 person volleyball off a small trampoline. Its more fun and difficult than you think! Involving lots of agility, precision and lightning reactions.

A key requirement was developing a discreet Ball bounce / Net effect mic system to capture the sound effects in crowded spectator courts.
I used radio Transmitters in an adapted hard cases, with the drilled openings for the Aerial and lavalliere mic placed ontop. Windproofed, Weather and Player proofed it was placed under the net to capture the bounce, and players exasperations . Perfectly.
This was all feed to the court cameras with Atmos mics and switched with the directors live cut.
Commentators were fed their own mix with IEMs through the Superlux 660 Commentor headsets, Directors utilised a Push to talk comms system, via a footswitch leaving his hands free to cut live to stream.
All audio was fed through the incredibly adaptable and easy to use Allen ANd Heath SQ5 desk. Great Machine. Thankyou Everything Audio for the kit and advice.

Well done Team USA for winning Both Ladies and Mens finals on Day 4, but also well done Canada, Germany and a fantastic effort from all European teams.

An exciting new challenge for me over 2 days at the Clapham Grand theatre, where I worked as a Sound Mixer for Stand up Comedian Sam Campbell during his July 2024 Wobservations tour. The job started with 4 cameras and 1 handheld microphone, but upon arrival, I discovered additional cameras, and mic requirements presenting challenges to overcome before showtime. The track count swiftly increased from 8 to 15, leading to the setup of 2x stereo cross pairs, a hard left/right mono pair with a murmur mic, and various FOH stems including Sam's handheld mic, mics for walk-on stooges, music playback, and spot FX mics for unexpected moments like a pop up living prop scream. Thanks to the versatility of the Sound devices 888 and the expertise of Alex Langer in Dante technology, we successfully managed to patch the required extra isolated stems for recording and mixing. Despite these technical intricacies, both days proceeded smoothly, requiring only minor adjustments in balancing the PA system for the theatre and managing the bleed from the record mics to capture audience reactions. Overall, it was a highly successful recording and mixing session, greatly assisted by the expertise of Alex.

During the turbulent weather this past summer, it brought back memories of a quieter time - the lockdown during Covid when I was eager to record. I specifically recall capturing a powerful Thunder clap in stereo.

I had been out in the mornings recording the sounds of nature, using my reliable Documentary Rig:- Sennhesier MKH60 with Ambeint ATE 208 Emesser fig 8 setup, always prepared for action. So when the wind picked up and the rain started pouring in June 2020, I swiftly got to my equipment and started recording to capture a massive Thunderclap directly above me, in all its magnificence.

It was an incredible experience. My only regret is that I forgot to oil the door hinges. Can you hear the creaking of the doors in the background of the recording? It adds a touch of melancholy to the overall ambiance.

Traveling to Hockenheim, conducting interviews, and setting up the car for internal filming was a manageable task. When rigging a performance car like the Mclaren MP4 12c, space can be a challenge, especially for a 6ft recordist like myself. We discreetly placed DPA 4099 microphones in the sun shade above the talent, while cardiod or Sanken Cubs microphones were positioned below out of sight. Radio mics were used on the talent as they entered and exited the cars, ensuring everything was securely in place. We even rigged a handheld microphone in the engine compartment through a fire retardant pipe to capture the intense sounds of the performance engine as it raced around the track. It was a hectic day as we had to match our work speed to the car's speed, capturing all the action in 2011.

Rome Italy 2014 in easier days to travel to the continent. A shoot for Nutopia about Metropolises
Beautiful to visit and shoot in, awfully noisy near any traffic areas, and RF was difficult to negotiate for radio mics. Directed by Andy Robbins and Dop Mark Hammond, I even got a local sound assistant.

I'm sure that's Mark sizing up a shot not over come by the cities beauty

At times, filming archaeological expeditions can evoke the adventurous spirit of Indiana Jones. One such memorable experience was a journey to Turkey in 2011, where I was tasked with exploring the early excavations of what is now recognized as a Neolithic archaeological site in Southeastern Turkey. The site dates back to approximately 9500 to 8000 BCE, belonging to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. Known for its ancient circular structures housing colossal stone pillars – the oldest megaliths in the world. What was once a modest excavation has now transformed into a sprawling site. It was a remarkable project for Atlantic Prods in the past, led by the talented Director Tim Conrad and cinematographer Andy Deardon. Even now, observing the vastness of the site, it is astounding to reflect on the magnitude of our experiences from that time.
