The Now
Too Hot To Handle (2024)
Michael Kennedy
As debut albums go “Too Hot To Handle” is up there with the best of them and for Wales’ latest big-thing The Now are quite rightly lapping up the praise.
I’ve followed the band for quite a few years and I’ve interviewed their charismatic frontman, Shane Callaghan, on several occasions so I thought I knew what to expect - but nothing quite prepared me for the sheer class and power that this album delivers. There is something for everyone on this one but rather than that make it a collection of tunes with no cohesion the album actually flows really well and has that definite ‘Now’ stamp - and despite their youth, the guys have pulled upon their collective experience of life, to date, to pen some pretty hard-hitting and insightful lyrics. The album was recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios and produced by Grammy Award winning Oli Jacobs (Gabriel / The 1975).
The Now are made up of Shane (lead
vocals/guitar), Callum Bromage (guitar/vocals), Jay Evans on (bass/vocals), Will Scott (drums) and they’ve so far been featured on Planet Rock’s Track of The Week, ITV, BBC Radio 2’s Johnnie Walker Show, Sky Sports with much more to come.
In the past they’ve toured with Reef, Florence Black and shared the stage with Placebo, Noel Gallagher, Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes - and you can catch them this month supporting Feeder.
If you buy one album this month make it this one !
10/10
