Sneak preview of cover art concepts for Duncan Fraser's speculative fiction novel Terrarium Hostel, publishing in the autumn.

In Terrarium Hostel, a young man named Dollop, fresh out of school, navigates life in The Terrarium, a sprawling space city linked to a groundbreaking project aiming to communicate with an extraterrestrial civilisation. As he works at the Defence Ministry and shares a hostel with fascinating roommates like the enigmatic Octave, who harbours ambitions of escape from his chauvinistic society, Dollop's world becomes increasingly complex.

When a slip-up exposes classified information, he gains unexpected confidence as he uncovers his own potential. However, a shocking truth forces him to reevaluate his identity just as he plans to return home. This captivating tale delves into themes of ambition, belonging, and self-discovery in an extraordinary universe, where personal and cosmic stakes intertwine.

Duncan Fraser is an award-winning Scottish writer and poet, known for his notable works including the play The Wite, which won the Scots Language Society’s Literary Competition, and the poem Implicated in the Plot, winner of the Colloquy Bonhoeffer Centenary Poetry Competition. He is also the author of The Campus of Love (Matador, 2018).

This is the ‘kid’, Henry Killerman, paraphrasing the exchange between Alice and the Cheshire Cat in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland,’ in an extract from my novel The Rivers That Run Through Us. In Lewis Carroll’s novel, Alice added as explanation “so long as I get SOMEWHERE. Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.” In my novel, Henry is so deep in s**t, it’ll be a miracle if he ever walks again.
