Yoshiki Okamoto Teases Project K Mobile Game With Blockchain/NFT

👉 Yoshiki Okamoto has published a teaser for his new game project with the tentative title Project K. The veteran game producer noted in a press release that the new project will involve blockchain and NFT.

👉 Okamoto also opened an official website and X account for Project K. The website’s background contains multiple keywords, with the ones in the alphabet reading “Android,” “iOS,” “Web3,” and “NFT.” Some of the other terms in Japanese katakana include “Roguelite,” “Breed,” “Trade,” “App,” “Smartphone,” and “Blockchain.”

👉 The website thus confirms that the blockchain game will be available on Android and iOS mobile devices.

👉 Yoshiki Okamoto began his career in the gaming industry by joining Konami in 1981 and creating the arcade shooter games Time Pilot and Gyruss.

👉 He is most known for his tenure in Capcom from 1984, where he recruited the illustrator Akira “Akiman” Yasuda which eventually led to the creation of Street Fighter II.

👉 Okamoto then went on to establish Game Republic in 2003, where he created the Genji action game series. However, the company went defunct in 2011 and Okamoto ultimately decided to shift his focus to mobile games.

👉 He was involved in the development of Monster Strike, which launched in late 2013 and is still actively ongoing as of 2024. Okamoto has also set up his own YouTube channel, where he announced his plans to retire on his 66th birthday in June 2027.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket devs say it’s not an NFT project

👉 “The Pokémon Company International has not developed or approved of Non Fungible Tokens”

👉 The Pokémon Company revealed a new virtual card collecting game called Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket on Tuesday. After the reveal, fans online expressed concern that the game would contain non fungible tokens (NFTs).

👉 However, it now looks like NFTs won’t play any part in the new game. In a statement issued to Polygon, a representative of the Pokémon Company said it has “not developed or approved” any Pokémon NFTs.

👉 Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is a new game from the Pokémon Company, Creatures Inc., and DeNA, the developers of Pokémon Masters EX.

👉 We only got a first trailer on Monday, but it’s already clear the game will heavily emphasize digital card collecting. Because of this, fans wondered if these digital card collectibles could be sold as NFTs. One person called the new game an “NFT scam” and another said that the developers made “Pokémon NFTs in 2024.”

👉 Polygon reached out to the Pokémon Company to seek clarification of the development team’s plans. In response, a representative told Polygon that the company “has not developed or approved of Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) related to the Pokémon brand and associated intellectual property” and that any NFTs being sold with Pokémon’s intellectual property “are unofficial and in no way affiliated with The Pokémon Company International or the Pokémon brand.”

👉 The idea of NFTs in a Pokémon game is an odd one. Sure, plenty of game companies have tried to find ways to incorporate NFTs into games and invested in the technology, but overall NFTs in games have been a bust. Fans of video games have rejected NFTs, and the broader crypto market that propped up NFTs also crashed.

👉 On top of all of that, NFTs’ need for blockchain technology would provide logistical challenges to development and seems like a mismatched fit for a family-friendly brand like Pokémon.

👉 Also, in the end, it’s just unnecessary. Video game developers don’t need NFTs to create valuable and limited virtual items — just look at how much people will spend on cosmetics in any live-service game.

👉 The developers have not revealed many details of the monetization model for this game, but we know that Pocket will be a free-to-play game and players can open “two booster packs every day at no cost,” the release said.

👉 My personal guess is that Pocket will have in-game purchases where people can buy more packs of cards to try and get a coveted card, just like fans do IRL. And just like in real life, people might be willing to spend exorbitant amounts to get the sparkling cards of their favorite Pokémon.

ZachXBT recovers majority of $177K stolen NFT proceeds after 9-month probe

👉 Blockchain investigator ZachXBT revealed that after a “lengthy process,” he has retrieved the majority of the proceeds from a stolen DeGods NFT sold in May 2023.

👉 Pseudonymous on-chain researcher ZachXBT has recovered most of the funds from the sale of a rare DeGods nonfungible token (NFT), which was stolen in May 2023 after the original NFT holder fell victim to a phishing scam.

👉 In a Feb. 24 X post, ZachXBT informed his 505,200 followers of the results of his nine-month investigation into the DeGods #3251 NFT theft, revealing that most of the funds have now been returned to the victim.

👉 “I am pleased to share that I was able to help recover a decent chunk of the stolen funds which have now been returned back to the victim.”

👉 ZachXBT received a message from the victim in May 2023, shortly after the victim realized his wallet had been drained, asking for ZachXBT’s help in recovering his digital art.

👉 ZachXBT’s investigations can vary in duration depending on the complexity involved. He often uses straightforward diagrams to show his followers how the phishing scams occurred and track the movement of funds, even through crypto mixers.

👉 “While recovery can be a lengthy process it does happen and I am always happy to share these success stories,” he stated.

👉 ZachXBT also disclosed his plan to conclude his pro bono blockchain investigation work shortly.

👉 He revealed this after receiving replies from X users showing frustration because he did not assist them in recovering their stolen crypto as well, despite him reiterating that he provides this service free of charge.

👉 “This is exactly why I am stopping all public goods work soon,” he stated.

👉 ZachXBT has played a prominent role across various areas of the crypto industry, assisting in deciphering crypto crimes for individuals and even national authorities.

👉 In October 2022, Cointelegraph reported that the French authorities were even utilizing ZachXBT’s research to catch fraudsters behind the $2.5 million theft of NFTs.

👉 Christophe Durand, the deputy chief of France’s national cyber unit, told the AFP that it became aware of the incident after observing an investigation from ZachXBT on social media.

The latest ‘Woj bomb’ was just a scam NFT tweet from a hacked account

👉 Adrian Wojnarowski’s X account was compromised to scam NFT traders with a fake NBA Top Shot site.

👉 People who still use NBA Top Shot were the primary targets of a scam tweet posted to ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski’s account on X Saturday evening at about 6:30PM ET. The tweet referred to NBA Top Shot as a “popular” NFT platform, despite the fact that current activity levels are a tiny fraction of what we saw during its peak, and falsely claimed a “free NFT pack is available to all customers.”

👉 The tweet linked visitors to a scam version of the NBA Top Shot website (the link went to a .org address instead of the official site’s .com URL) that could attempt to drain assets from people who give it access to their crypto wallets. About a half hour later, the official Top Shot account posted, saying, “There is NO Free Airdrop happening on NBA Top Shot at this time, Please be careful and always double check links.”

👉 The post was eventually pulled from Wojnarowski’s account after being live for nearly an hour. Because of his reputation for breaking news tweets, many NBA fans have alerts turned on for his posts and could have had account information stolen if they clicked the fraudulent link.

👉 A number of high-profile Twitter / X accounts continue to get compromised. Wojnarowski’s recent NBA news posts have also been syndicated on Threads, however that account was not used for the scam.

Starbucks Odyssey’s community lead sees NFTs as the best way to build brand loyalty

👉 The NFT space may be down substantially from all-time highs, but brands and loyalty programs looking to reach fans in new ways can still find value, said Steve Kaczynski, co-author of the book “The Everything Token” and community lead for Starbucks Odyssey.

👉 “Brand anchors” to gated areas like reward programs are something that companies will expand upon in 2024, he said. “I think this year we’re going to see a lot of community-based brand building,"

👉 Starbucks launched Starbucks Odyssey in 2022 as its initial foray into the web3 world. The experience combined the company’s Starbucks Reward loyalty program with NFTs to enhance customer experiences, TechCrunch previously reported.

👉 “We’re able to help people find their tribe,” Kaczynski said. “I’ve seen that people who live in California in the Starbucks Odyssey community are really good friends with people in Chicago and they have met up in real life at times. This never would have happened if not for web3.”

👉 The loyalty program has a five-tiered system with over 58,000 active participants at least on level one, Kaczynski said. “I can promise you those aren’t mostly or all web3 native people … it’s not just web3 people who are participating.”

👉 Those who hit tier five of the program bought a “decent amount” off the secondary marketplaces, Kaczynski said. In December, for example, Starbucks announced that it’s sending the top 20 participants to Costa Rica to visit the coffee giant’s farms where beans are produced.

👉 There are other “third-party utilities” to be developed through NFTs, not just by big companies like Starbucks or Nike but by local businesses that want to spin up loyalty programs or use tickets as an asset they can anchor and incentivize.

👉 Kaczynski brought up this example: Let’s say Hot Pockets, the food brand, put out a promotion where it would give a 20% discount to gamers if they bought the brand’s Fortnite skin and connected it to a crypto wallet.

👉 “The purchaser is happy, the eater is happy and they get a discount and they’re in the ecosystem,” he said. “This person isn’t just a gamer, they’re an active gamer who’s participating and willing to spend disposable income on third-party things.”

👉 When people think of NFTs, they often think of just expensive monkey pictures on the internet — and to be fair, that’s one part of it with Bored Ape Yacht Club — but there’s more value to be held in owning NFTs, Kaczynski says.

👉 “Imagine you go into a museum and you see a beautiful painting on the wall, you can take a picture of that painting but it’s not worth any money. The picture on the wall is worth money because the museum owns it, it’s the original and they can prove both of those things,” Kaczynski said. “Up until recently you couldn’t do that with digital items” until NFTs came out.

👉 Brands and companies having the ability to buy and sell and “truly own your loyalty is a new concept that makes it less one-way,” Kaczynski said. “While not all the community members engage in buying and selling … I think for a lot of people, having that optionality is so important.”

Injective Introduces 'ERC-404' Port to Capitalize on the Hype Around the Experimental Token Standard

👉 Injective’s CW-404 standard allows for fractional ownership of NFTs, making it more accessible to users and allowing for financial use cases.

👉 The Sushi Fighter NFT collection is the first to utilize the CW-404 standard on Injective, featuring generative profile pictures and custom minting logic.

👉 Layer 1 blockchain Injective introduced the CW-404 standard, a replica of the wildly popular experimental token standard ERC-404, for its network on Friday.

👉 The Cosmos-based Injective is teaming up with decentralized exchange DojoSwap to offer the CW-404 standard. CW-404 is a port of the ERC-404 and combines the CW-20 and CW-721 standards, which relate to token issuance and NFTs, respectively.

👉 ERC-404 is an unofficial Ethereum token standard that allows multiple wallets to directly own a single non-fungible token (NFT) and gives its holders the ability to create a use case where that specific exposure can be tokenized and used to take out loans or stake holdings.

👉 Tokens standards are a set of rules and protocols that define how digital tokens should behave and interact within a specific blockchain ecosystem.

👉 The “experimental" standard brought in millions of dollars worth to the Ethereum ecosystem but has also been criticized for referencing the official “ERC” name. As a category, ERC-404 tokens are collectively worth over $173 million, data from CoinMarketCap shows, despite having been released just over two weeks ago.

👉 The CW-404 is a way for Injective to bring some of the investment from Ethereum to its own network. “CW404 is set to spawn a legion of new dApps and innovations that are simply not possible anywhere outside of Injective,” developers said in an X post.

👉 The Sushi Fighter NFT collection is the first to utilize the CW-404 standard on Injective, featuring generative profile pictures and custom minting logic, as per a post.

👉 The blockchain currently locks less than $50 million worth of tokens, data shows, a significantly smaller amount than Ethereum, which holds a massive $46 billion.

WWE digital collectibles on Panini, Sports Illustrated NFT tickets on Avalanche

👉 Collectible firm Panini announced the launch of World Wrestling Entertainment’s digital Donruss Elite card set on its blockchain.

👉 In this week’s newsletter, find out why Sports Illustrated is moving its nonfungible token (NFT) tickets to Avalanche and how NFT IDs in the Mocaverse are being streamlined. Read about World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) releasing a digital collection on the Panini Blockchain and Yuga Labs’ acquisition of Proof.

👉 Sports Illustrated’s NFT ticketing platform, Box Office, moved to the Avalanche network on Feb. 20. SI Tickets, the ticketing arm of Sports Illustrated, announced that it is collaborating with Ava Labs, the developers behind Avalanche. With the new partnership, Box Office’s NFT tickets will now be minted in the Avalanche network.

👉 SI Tickets CEO David Lane shared that NFT ticketing will change the game for tickets, that only usually end up in the trash after being used in events. With NFT tickets, Lane believes there could be more engagement opportunities for event owners and attendees.

👉 Mocaverse’s nontransferable NFT digital identity called “Moca ID,” KuCoin’s user accounts and Halo’s Genesis membership pass will be combined to streamline on-chain identity in Web3. On Feb. 15, Animoca Brands’ Mocaverse, crypto exchange KuCoin and Web3 wallet Halo announced a collaborative effort for digital identity.

👉 According to a spokesperson from KuCoin, Web3 sub-ecosystems like trading, digital collectibles and the metaverse “operate somewhat independently.” Because of this, accessing benefits across the ecosystem may be challenging, and the initiative between the three entities is attempting to solve this issue.

👉 Collectible firm Panini announced the launch of a digital Donruss Elite card set on the Panini Blockchain. The card set will include WWE superstars like John Cena, Steve Austin, Roman Reigns and more.

👉 This isn’t WWE’s first entry into NFTs. The wrestling entertainment company and actor and wrestler John Cena released a series of NFT collections in 2021 featuring benefits like front-row tickets to Wrestlemania for the highest bidder.

Autoglyphs set acquired for $14.6m in largest NFT sale since 2022

👉 A complete set of 10 Autoglyphs was acquired for 5,000 ETH, approximately $14.6 million today, marking the highest NFT sale in the past two years and the fifth-largest purchase on-chain.

👉 The sale was conducted via Fountain dot xyz, a brokerage for rare digital art. The collector wished to remain anonymous, but a representative said that the buyer comes from a background of collecting traditional analog art forms and views the Autoglyphs as no different from a standard art acquisition.

👉 Autoglyphs were introduced in 2019 by Larva Labs, the creators behind the iconic CryptoPunks, and represent the pinnacle of on-chain generative art. Unlike many NFTs that rely on off-chain storage, every aspect of an Autoglyph, from its creation algorithm to its final visual output, exists directly on the Ethereum blockchain. This solves the off-chain storage issues encountered by previous projects like CryptoPunks.

👉 Each piece in this collection of 512 is immutable and is without royalties. Autoglyphs are considered the purest form of generative art within the blockchain space.

👉 The set was one of only seven full sets and among the three developer sets curated and minted directly by Matt Hall and John Watkinson of Larva Labs. The acquired set was also previously part of the “Old School Collection.”

👉 The purchase adds a new milestone in the Autoglyphs’ legacy, which has seen over $50 million in secondary sales and exhibitions at prestigious venues like Centre Pompidou and Sotheby’s.

Pudgy Penguins expands Walmart ties to 3,100 stores

👉 Non-fungible token brand Pudgy Penguins has upped its footprint in the Walmart chain by more than 50%, expanding from 2,000 locations to 3,100.

👉 Why it matters: Actual holders of the NFTs, represented by its line of physical penguin toys, will directly benefit both financially and personally from the licensing of their products.

👉 Thirty different penguin toys will be released in this latest promotion, all representing actual, previously existing NFTs.

👉 What they're saying: The tokens are "a great way to align incentives between your early believers and the growth and success of the brand," Luca Netz, the CEO of Pudgy Penguins, tells Axios.

👉 The 30 new toys will range in price from $2.99 to $11.97.
Of note: The toys will have QR codes that will give their holders access to the collection's forthcoming online experience, Pudgy World.

👉 It's an open world environment where penguin enthusiasts will be able to interact and play together.
The intrigue: The penguin-based digital collection has been one of the only major lines of NFTs that has been rising in value across the board over the last year.

👉 The floor price (the selling price for its most common items) has risen from 6 ETH at the start of 2023 to 21 ETH ($61,000) today.
The whole collection has the third-highest market cap of all NFT collections,

Sports Illustrated Tickets moves NFT service to Avalanche

👉 Avalanche has purchased a stake in Sports Illustrated Tickets and become the blockchain provider for its NFT-enabled ticketing service, Box Office.

👉 Box Office is a blockchain-based ticketing service that individuals can use to set up paid or free events. The so-called Super Tickets NFT tickets enabled by Box Office offer features including NFT videos, exclusive offers and loyalty benefits, SI Tickets said in a press release.

👉 Sports Illustrated Tickets is a secondary market ticketing platform under the Sports Illustrated umbrella. It leases the Sports Illustrated brand from a brand management firm but is a separate company from the embattled magazine, SI Tickets CEO David Lane stressed in an interview.

👉 Since the platform’s release in May 2023, roughly 300,000 tickets have been issued through Box Office, SI Tickets said.

👉 Box Office initially launched on Polygon with support from Consensys. Ava Labs, the company developing Avalanche, was in talks with SI Tickets to support the platform back then, John Nahas, Ava Labs’ senior vice president of business development, said. Less than a year later, SI Tickets switched chains.

👉 “Polygon had their moment, and then they [SI Tickets] came back to us and said, ‘Look, a lot of the things that you guys promised that you would do and help with etc., and on the tech side, seems to be true with all the things you’re doing with everybody else, and we’re eager to switch over to Avalanche,’” Nahas said.

👉 Ava Labs apparently sees a lot of promise in NFT ticketing. It invested in another Web3 ticketing platform named tixbase, and South Korean concert ticket platform Dreamus integrated with Avalanche.

👉 But as far as NFT tickets go, SI Tickets’ Box Office “is the main leg out of a multi-leg stool,” Nahas said.

👉 SI Tickets’ Lane expressed optimism about Web3’s potential for the ticketing world, noting that the status quo of barcode scans are “useless” in comparison to NFT tickets that make verification easier and can serve as mementoes after the event.

MIAMI’S CULINARY SCENE EMBRACES NFTS: BORED CUBAN’S INNOVATIVE MASCOT

👉 Miami, a vibrant city known for its diverse culinary offerings, has welcomed an intriguing new addition to its gastronomic landscape. Bored Cuban, a fast-casual eatery that opened its doors on South Le Jeune Road, is stirring up the local food scene with a unique twist.

👉 Beyond its mouth-watering flatbreads and Cuban-style Pop-Tarts, what sets Bored Cuban apart is its distinctive mascot: Manolo, a cartoon-ape NFT from the celebrated Bored Apes Yacht Club collection.

👉 A BLEND OF CULINARY ARTS AND DIGITAL INNOVATION
Bored Cuban is the brainchild of Eric Castellanos, a visionary entrepreneur and owner of the well-regarded Latin Cafe 2000 brand. Castellanos’ innovative approach to branding marries the rich culinary traditions of Cuban cuisine with the cutting-edge world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

👉 By adopting an NFT as the face of Bored Cuban, Castellanos not only pays homage to digital art but also positions his restaurant at the intersection of technology and tradition.

👉 The mascot, Manolo, is a character that embodies the essence of Bored Cuban’s identity. Pictured smoking a cigar and donning a guayabera, Manolo reflects the laid-back yet sophisticated vibe that Castellanos aims to cultivate within his establishment.

👉 The choice of a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT as a mascot is particularly fitting, considering the collection’s status as a symbol of exclusivity and community in the digital art space.

👉 By integrating an NFT into the core branding of Bored Cuban, Castellanos is exploring uncharted territory in the restaurant industry. This move not only highlights the growing influence of digital art and blockchain technology on mainstream culture but also signals a new era of creative marketing strategies.

👉 As NFTs continue to captivate the imagination of artists, collectors, and entrepreneurs alike, their incorporation into various aspects of daily life, including dining, opens up exciting possibilities for cross-pollination between sectors.

👉 Bored Cuban’s embrace of an NFT mascot reflects a broader trend of digitalization and innovation within the culinary world. As restaurants seek to distinguish themselves in a competitive market, the fusion of art, technology, and gastronomy offers a fresh avenue for engaging with customers and creating memorable dining experiences.

👉 Bored Cuban, a new fast-casual restaurant in Miami, stands out with its unique mascot, Manolo, a cartoon-ape NFT from the Bored Apes Yacht Club collection.

👉 Owned by Eric Castellanos of Latin Cafe 2000, the restaurant merges Cuban culinary traditions with the digital art world, showcasing the potential of NFTs in creative branding and marketing within the food industry.

9dcc's First Full NFT Fashion Collection Is Designed for the 'Crypto Mob'

👉 Gmoney’s connected brand is bringing 9dcc Collection 01 to NFT Paris and Paris Fashion Week.

👉 Connected fashion brand 9dcc, which already launched premium t-shirts and baseball caps paired with Ethereum NFTs that enable on-chain benefits, has unveiled its first full luxury fashion line. The 9dcc Collection 01 is set to debut this week in France.

👉 Previewing at NFT Paris and then Paris Fashion Week in the coming days, 9dcc Collection 01 spans more than 60 items, including coats, pants, hooded sweatshirts, blazers, tank tops, boxer shorts, and beyond. The fall 2024 collection uses materials sourced from Italy, Japan, and the United States.

👉 Each item has a sewn-in near-field communication (NFC) chip corresponding with an Ethereum NFT, which is used to prove authenticity and unlock community features and other functionality.

👉 One such feature is the ability to have the creators—including pseudonymous crypto personality and 9dcc founder and CEO gmoney—digitally sign apparel and have it remain linked to the NFT in question.

👉 According to the company, 9dcc Collection 01 is targeted at the “crypto mob,” taking inspiration from “Yakuza street style to the charisma of timeless gangster cinema” and aiming to be worn by tech founders and their contemporaries.

👉 “Targeting modern mavericks and ‘Zuck types’ who aspire to a formidable presence as they unveil innovative concepts, the collection appeals to ‘future gangsters’ who prefer subtlety over ostentation yet command any room with their presence,” reads an official description.

👉 9dcc will not only preview the pieces at this week’s Paris events but also offer attendees the opportunity to pre-purchase items in the collection.

👉 "The essence of future luxury lies in convenience. Our vision for fashion is to bridge connections with culture, unlock new opportunities, and foster deeper interactions with our surroundings,” said gmoney in a release. “We're charting a new course for how fashion houses engage with their audiences by venturing into a realm where the value of fandom surpasses that of mere transactions.”

Moonbirds Sales Spiked Before Yuga Deal Was Official

👉 A surge in sales earlier this week is fueling insider trading speculation after Yuga Labs revealed its acquisition of Proof and Moonbirds.

👉 Prices and trading volume for Ethereum NFT collection Moonbirds rose sharply Friday afternoon, following the announcement that Bored Ape Yacht Club maker Yuga Labs had acquired the IP for the collection alongside creator Proof. But sizable spikes in the last couple days have fueled speculation of insider trading ahead of the reveal.

👉 According to data from blockchain analytics platform CryptoSlam, daily sales volume for Moonbirds NFTs was under the $100,000 mark for each day this month through February 13, with only one exception—February 4 with about $141,000 worth.

👉 But on February 14, daily Moonbirds sales volume spiked fivefold from the previous day to about $460,000, with almost four times as many transactions as before. And on February 15, sales volume remained elevated at about $333,000 worth. Today, then, sales surged following the afternoon announcement, with the daily tally currently at about $3.1 million and counting.

👉 A look at the project’s price floor—or the price of the cheapest listed asset in the collection—shows a similar spike in the days ahead of the Friday announcement.

👉 The price sat at around $2,680 worth of ETH on Monday afternoon, per data from NFT Price Floor, and then started climbing before taking off on Wednesday to hit $5,000. The price started to creep down from there, but then spiked again on Friday after the announcement, briefly topping $6,000 worth of ETH. It’s down to about $5,170 as of this writing.

👉 Rising asset prices following the deal announcement is no big surprise, but there’s no clear indication of what would fuel such a surge beforehand outside of trading on insider knowledge. And influencers, developers, and community members took to Crypto Twitter on Friday to call out the potential for insider trading.

👉 Tweeting a sales/price chart for the week that demonstrates the unexplained Wednesday spike on Wednesday, pseudonymous blockchain developer cygaar wrote, “Moonbirds chart before the Yuga acquisition tweet. Nope, definitely no insider trading here.”

👉 Another well-known pseudonymous crypto trader and influencer, Cirrus, joked that a wallet that purchased more than 150 NFTs from the Proof ecosystem over the last few days was “Nancy Pelosi’s wallet.” The U.S. Representative and former Speaker of the House has been accused of trading stocks based on insider knowledge.
