Some of our latest sources. Sane’s focus is on new ecology, future & tech while we work on expanding our topics to philosophy, psychology and more. Instead of summarising entire books and bodies of research into a few minutes we carefully extract insights piece by piece to give you that lightbulb moment every day, keeping the essence of the arguments intact💡

What are the works on your reading list that you can’t seem to find the time for?

Monica Bonvicini | Italian, b. 1965, Venice, Italy, based in Berlin, Germany

"Art has always been a social mirror. I expect that from art.”

Her multifaceted practice—which investigates the relationship between architecture, power, gender, space, surveillance and control—is translated into works that question the meaning of making art, the ambiguity of language, and the limits and possibilities attached to the ideal of freedom. Dry-humored, direct, and imbued with historical, political and social references, Bonvicini’s art never refrains from establishing a critical connection with the sites where it is exhibited, the materials that comprise it, and the roles of spectator and creator. This approach, which has been at the core of her production since her first solo exhibition at the California Institute of the Arts in 1991, has formally evolved over the years without betraying its analytical force and inclination to challenge the viewer’s perspective while taking hefty sideswipes at socio-cultural conventions.

Talking about polarisation with

The race for our attention has created a digital world that is algorithmically for misinformation, conspiracy theories, and content that triggers outrage. The consequence is polarisation. And the consequence of polarisation is our inability to effectively cooperate and solve problems as urgent and important as climate change.

Atmospheric CO2 levels measured on December 9 were at 413.99 PPM.

Based on the current surge it’s estimated we’ll pass the 450 PPM mark before 2040. Given this trajectory, CO2 concentrations are almost certain to overshoot the Targets set in the Paris climate agreement.

To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees we now need to remove already-emitted CO2 from the atmosphere (between 100 billion and 1 trillion tonnes).

Reforestation and land restoration are both viable strategies to storing excess CO2. Policies need to focus on ecological restoration, not just mitigation.

READ: In the first edition of Sane, we mentioned Emily Segal’s debut novel Mercury Retrograde and wanted to share it here as well.

The autofictional novel is full of sharp observations about the present (and future) of culture set in pre-Trump New York. ⚡️

Michael Heizer, a pioneer of the earthworks movement, began “City” in 1972. A mile and a half long and inspired by ancient ritual cities, it is made from rocks, sand, and concrete mined and mixed on site.

Contemporary art for social impact

*STUDIO_1X) is a space dedicated to celebrating (ARTISTS) who are not afraid to think and work in unconventional ways.

*Art is one of the most powerful tools available to fight polarisation - to propose alternatives for the infinitely evolving aspects of our lives. Artists interpret and reimagine the world - through their practice, they enable us to expand our subjective and collective experiences. They are harbingers for change. Yet somehow the reach of their ideas is too often restrained to a marginal crowd.

*STUDIO_1X) is a space of collective consciousness that was born out of meaningful moments and unexpected encounters. It's a concept for co-creation, aiming to initiate dialogue on the issues we face as a society. We collaborate, listen, and create. We invite you to join our community - to support a movement of artists and creatives. Our first collection will be launched online soon. http://www.studio-1x.com/
