Coleg Cambria cemented its place among the top institutions in the country for its work with young adult carers.

Cambria received QSCS (Quality Standard in Carer Support) reaccreditation from The Carers Federation, having been one of the first 10 colleges in the UK to receive the inaugural award in 2020.

Examples of good practice included multiple opportunities for student engagement and feedback; proactive and continuous review and consideration of how to develop and improve further, and cross-college working and communication to embed a cohesive approach to young adult carer support.

According to the Welsh Government, there are more than 22,500 young carers and young adult carers in Wales – almost two carers in every classroom – and national data revealed they are three times more likely to be NEET (not in education, employment or training) as other young people, and five times more likely to drop out of college.

Bethan Charles, Head of Learner Services at Coleg Cambria, paid tribute to staff who worked hard to secure the accolade.

“A lot of credit must go to our Student Support team for their hard work, notably Greg Otto and Becky Preece,” said Bethan.

“As a college we demonstrated an improvement in our provision for young carers, how we have identified them and their needs, formed focus groups, increased representation on community organisations and forged new partnerships.

“Our young carers also have input into the policies we have introduced and sit on interview panels for staff in this area, which is important and gives them a say on the issues facing them and how together we can put effective strategies in place so they can achieve their education goals.”

A pet retailer lined up another paw-some calendar of events as it prepares for further growth in 2025.

A busy year for PetPlace – which has stores in Llangefni, Ruthin, Mold and Gledrid, Oswestry, and a HQ in Kinmel Bay – looks set to be replicated and even bettered over the coming 12 months.

Reflecting on a “challenging year” for the industry, Managing Director Sion Pritchard said the award-winning company performed well and plans to provide loyal customers with even more incentives and activities from this month onwards.

“Our amazing team are so dedicated and worked hard during what was a challenging year for the retail sector,” he said.

“We are thankful to them and to existing and new suppliers for their continued support and are excited to all work together to make 2025 a success.”

Sion added: “There are big plans to improve our offering for the thousands of pets and their owners who visit us each week, and to play an even bigger part in the community.

“Following the success of our event programme in 2024 we have even more in the pipeline and will make further announcements in the near future.”

Public sector supply chain workshops will whet the appetite of food and drink producers in Wales.

Organised by Busnes Cymru Menter Môn, the free programme of events will begin with a virtual session on Social Value in the Public Sector with Ian McGrady, Director of Ellesmere Port-based Edsential Catering, and Huw Griffiths, Procurement Adviser at Gwynedd County Council, on January 22.

This will be followed by an interactive presentation on January 28, focusing on Welsh public sector supply chains, particularly NHS procurement, including frameworks and tendering processes.

There will also be a session for food procurement teams and SMEs on joint-bidding and the importance of taking a share in the market, on February 11.

Menter Môn’s Food Project Manager David Wylie (pictured), said: “Via Business Wales we have worked hard to provide independent producers, small businesses, and larger companies in Wales with a platform to break into public sector supply chains. Whether that be local authorities, schools, hospitals or relevant organisations, we want to encourage the use of more local food and drink in their menus.

“Doing so has a major impact on the environment as it lowers their carbon footprint but also supports regional economies across the country, which in turn has a knock-on effect for employment.

“Local produce can also be more nutritious as it hasn’t travelled hundreds or in some case thousands of miles. The benefits are limitless.”

A beloved tearoom and guest house will reopen this year following investment and improvements.

Penbont House in Elan Valley, Rhayader, closed last May as the business was no longer viable given trading conditions, a lack of resources and the challenging economic climate.

Following refurbishment of the interior and a wave of support from the community and visitors from across the UK, Discover Elan is now seeking a tenant to take on the building.

The Trust’s Business Manager Jonathan Davies said they are targeting an operator with experience and ideas, to unlock the popular site’s “huge potential” in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains near the Garreg-Ddu and Penygarreg reservoirs.

“We closed the tearoom and guesthouse with heavy hearts, as the wider cost implications meant the business was no longer viable and the Trust itself was running it day to day and did not have the resources or expertise to manage the venue long-term,” he said.

“We are in a position now to reopen, following repairs and maintenance, and are looking for a new operating model and someone with the passion and experience to realise its huge potential."

For more information and to arrange a viewing of the property, contact Andrew Lowe at Roger Parry and Partners, Mercian House, 9 Darwin Court, Oxon Business Park, Shrewsbury, SY3 5AL. Email [email protected] or call 01743 791336.

TRES BIEN! A former music teacher has started writing songs in French after being inspired by tutors on a college languages course.

Talented Paul Fisher, from Wrexham, performed some of his new compositions for fellow learners at Coleg Cambria Yale this week.

Paul, who spent most of his career teaching at the city’s St Christopher’s School, sang and played classical guitar, including his own tracks, Où Sont Passés Ces Jours (Where Have Those Days Gone), and Mon Coeur est Ouvert (My Heart is Open).

Having played harmonica, keyboard and guitar with local bands over the years he recently returned to his “great passion” and plans to release solo material this year.

Coleg Cambria rallied behind a popular tennis academy which went from strength to strength in 2024.

The strategic partnership between Cambria and Table Tennis Wales has been a smash hit, with hundreds of players participating in community events over the last 12 months.

And there will be even more sessions for them to enjoy this year as Regional Development Officer for North Wales Aaron Beech unveiled a programme of activities to take place at the college’s Yale site in Wrexham.

In addition to junior coaching and community sessions every Tuesday, for children and adults of all skill levels, high school and primary school competitions will be held in the weeks ahead.

“We also have a new partnership with Parkinson's UK Cymru and are inviting anyone with the condition, and volunteers and carers, to support us as we look to hold sessions throughout the year,” said Aaron.

“We have engaged with staff and learners at Cambria who are already helping with coaching and raising awareness and want to see even more people taking part over the coming months given the incredible response we have had to this point.”

Pioneers in leadership and management training joined forces to unveil a new suite of team development programmes.

Gwenllian Owen and Katy Roberts have launched Team Mesen, a collaboration focused on resilience, continuous learning and individual confidence that will "propel collective success".

The long-time friends and colleagues, who both live on Anglesey, designed a series of bilingual interactive courses for business owners, entrepreneurs and individuals looking to progress in their careers.

Among their services will be individual executive coaching sessions and team development programmes centred on DISC profiling.

These are made up of Wisdom Workshops and Coaching Circles where business leaders can share best practice and take a detailed look at their management styles, and how they can improve.

Gwenllian, a former project manager on the ION Leadership and 20Twenty programmes in North Wales, said there is demand in the region for a fresh approach to business management and team development.

Coleg Cambria designed a new strategy aimed at flexible higher education for workers and adult learners.

The Higher Technical Skills Strategy will be launched in January with the aim of enhancing access and participation, encouraging curriculum development and innovation, and forging partnerships within multiple industries to plug gaps in expertise and experience.

Cambria’s Dean of Access and Higher Education (HE) Emma Hurst said providing more opportunities to communities in north east Wales and beyond – particularly under-represented groups – allows the college to give prospective students a platform to pursue or progress in their chosen careers.

“Widening access and participation is a particular focus as there are many adults out there who perhaps felt a higher education was out of their reach,” said Emma.

“By breaking down learning into modules we can be more flexible, and people can tailor what they do to meet their needs, whether that be online or in person.

“We still have a raft of full time HE programmes but this will open up our offering to more people, so they can build it into a qualification, notably workers with little free time or returning adult learners.”

New subjects will be introduced – in collaboration with Pearson learning group – from September, in addition to modular, unitised packages and blended delivery.

The Higher Technical Skills team will also look to introduce further FE programmes to support progression onto its programmes.

An event celebrating digital innovation and entrepreneurship in west Wales was a major success.

Organised by Antur Cymru Enterprise, the SMART Busnes Cymru Conference welcomed organisations, start-ups and individuals from across the country to historic Castell Aberteifi - Cardigan Castle in Ceredigion.

Together they championed the strides made by town centres and high streets embracing advances in technology – notably in recording footfall and consumer trends – and encouraged neighbouring local authorities and other stakeholders to adopt bespoke, sustainable IT solutions such as IoT (Internet of Things) and LoRaWAN.

The forum explored opportunities and challenges in Ceredigion’s 'tech revolution' and the impact of the SMART Busnes Project, delivered by Antur Cymru in partnership with Ceredigion County Council via the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund, which has helped more than 150 start-ups and small businesses in the last year alone.

A successful year ended with a place among the top 10 independent schools in Wales for a Bangor institution.

St Gerard's School Trust was listed eighth in the country in the annual Sunday Times Parent Power Guide.

The news comes after headteacher Campbell Harrison, teachers and staff celebrated a 16% rise in pupils having secured some of the best A Level and GCSE results in Wales over the summer.

Despite the challenges facing the private education sector he revealed the “unity and dedication” of everyone at the school – including parents, carers and the community – gives them confidence heading into 2025.

“We’ve had an unbelievable 12 months and to end it in the top 10 independent schools list for Wales is the perfect Christmas gift,” said Mr Harrison.

“The rise in learners, our amazing exam results and the major investment we have made shows how committed we are to the pupils and their families and raising the bar even higher next year and for years to come.”

17/12/2024

Coleg Cambria is at the forefront of a nationwide campaign to meet a surge in demand for tens of thousands of new welders.

With an ageing workforce of welders in the UK - an estimated 50% of which are set to retire in the next three years - the sector will need more than 35,000 skilled workers, according to reports.

Anthony Commins, a Fabrication and Welding lecturer at Cambria Deeside, said there has been an increase in students on the course this academic year.

However, many more learners need to pursue welding as a career if the skills gap is to close.

“More people have joined us but nationally there has been a decline in the amount of young people going into engineering, especially welding,” said Tony.

“There is a lot of demand – especially overseas – and so many opportunities in what is a highly skilled profession.

“Welders are highly sought-after all over the world, notably in the US and Australia, as well as the UK, so it’s an avenue they should think about.”
