📢 Say it louder for those in the back! Because that’s an ethos worth embodying worldwide.

Meet: John Meadowcroft, writer for Ethos! 🙋‍♂️

“John is a freelance writer and digital-media type currently living on the Wirral. And he's quite insistent that it's 'the Wirral', not 'Wirral', despite what some people might say. He's also not as bland as that sentence makes him out to be…”

John wrote several features for Ethos 21, including The Big Idea (Essential Homes), Ethos Meets: M.N. Rosen, This Month We're Thinking About and How to: Improve a City.

In issue 21 of Ethos, we asked Bhagya Barrett, creative director and founder of Rebel City Distillery in Cork, “what’s your ethos?”.

✨ “Spirits bound by alchemy and artistry. And doing things right and mindfully.”✨

Nope, this post isn’t sponsored by a Back to The Future remake (though we’re certainly not discouraging one!), but it IS an ode to the role a flux might play on a circuit board; making it easier for information to flow 💡

Andrew Beattie talks about what it means to be a human flux in our “In Other Words” feature of Ethos 21, acting as the intersection between a lazy river and a jet stream when it comes to helping information pass between colleagues, businesses, and all fellow human beings in an easier, efficient manner.

“Being the flux is how I make things better.”

You can find out more about what it means to be a flux by grabbing a copy of Ethos 21 here: https://ethos-magazine.com/shop/

And remember: being a flux is a flex 💪

We asked the courageous Gaelic fairy queen’s eponymous whiskey distilling counterpart, Nc'nean Distillery and its equally fearless founder, Annabel Thomas (as featured in the Cover Story of Ethos 21) what their ethos was. And this is what she said:

“Live well but leave the planet in a better state than you found it. And for me, living well is about food, drink, travel, loved ones.” 🌎💙

Now that’s an ethos we can drink to. Let’s raise a glass to that!🥂

You can read all about Nc’Nean in our latest issue of Ethos and here: https://ethos-magazine.com/the-queen-of-spirits/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Post&utm_campaign=The+Queen+of+Spirits+Ethos+Issue+21

🎉 How to: Improve a City 🏙️

Written by our very own John Meadowcroft, interviewing Jeroen Beekmans and the team at Pop-Up City about all things city improvement, this story featured in our latest issue of Ethos!

“Amsterdam-based agency Pop-Up City specialises in urban planning with a difference. Change, they believe, is the only constant in cities across the world today.”

Remember our “The Hundred Year Books” feature in Ethos 21? 📚

Sharing the story of the Norwegian forest that’s growing a library for one hundred books – written by a different author each year – to be published on pages made from its very trees in the year 2114? 🌲

You know, the Future Library project based in , born from the mind of artist Katie Paterson? (If you don’t, grab yourself a copy of Ethos 21.) 🤯

You do! Super! Then you’re going to love this: you can find Katie and Anne Beate Hovind, Chair of the Future Library Trust, on the Curious Neighbours podcast, where they celebrate 10 years of Future Library’s century long endeavour.

We’ve waited until now to talk about the infamous intentions that emerge from beneath torn up wrapping paper and saunter into the spotlight when the clock strikes midnight – you know; your New Year’s resolutions – because the first week of January is too busy being *meh*.

You're finishing off Christmas snacks. Taking down the deccies. Sulking about the impending first day back at work. Nobody should be expected to stick to their existing routines during that stagnant period, let alone create new ones. Not until the second week AT LEAST.

But now it’s begun, and so have many of your resolutions – don’t worry, we’re not going to ask if you’ve been sticking to them. We just wanted to show you ours.

Here at Ethos, our New Year’s resolutions are ones we endeavour to achieve, year round. They’re not just intentions; they’re our ethos entirely.

🌍 Do a little good for the world in any number of small ways.

📖 Continue to share stories of good businesses, locally and globally.

💬 Talk openly about what matters.

😅 Don’t sweat the small stuff – embrace it.

🫂 Build a community of like minded beings.

💓 Remind ourselves why (why we do what we do, why we love it, why it’s important).

📚 Read a chapter of Ethos before bed.

Please let us know if there’s anything you think is missing from the list. And feel free to share with us what your intentions for the year are down below 👇

Because hey, it’s 2025. The year to thrive: https://ethos-magazine.com/

Welcome 2025! And welcome back fellow Ethos readers, followers, observers, friends, comrades and other coexisting creatures of all kinds👋

The new year is… not so new, now. We’re already over a week into January, the remnants of 2024 left in the half eaten boxes of mince pies shoved to the back of the cupboard, and the crossed out dates in our diaries as we struggle to remember to write 2025 instead 🙃 clearly we’re not ready to let go of 2024 just yet…

Which is why, beginning next week, we’ll be sharing our Top 10 Ethos Most-Read of 2024 (stories from our site!) with you weekly 📚 as our way of reflecting, reminiscing and raising a glass to some of ours – and your – favourite reads from last year.

👀 So keep your eyes peeled and your social media open (or head to our site if you fancy fitting in some Ethos reading today): https://ethos-magazine.com/

Until then, this is Ethos, signing off for 2024. *Hat tilts at the calendar.* Thank you for everything. It’s been one we’ll never forget. Here’s to the next🥂

With two magazines out this year – Ethos 20 and Ethos 21 – we’ve uncovered the ethoses of a great many marvellous people. Brands and businesses, projects and products, individuals and entire communities all dedicated to a similar cause:

🌎 Doing a little good for the world. That ethos happens to be ours, too 🌎

But with a new year teetering on the horizon comes the opportunity to find new purposes, adopt new habits, embody new beliefs. 2024 is shedding its skin so that the next year can awaken and begin. And as it blinks, sleepy-eyed, into existence, we’re wondering:

🤷‍♀️ What’s your Ethos for 2025? 🤔

Your purpose. Your why. Your stars beyond the sky. The thing that will propel you through the months of this brand new beginning. Let us know in the comments below!👇

Last week we started sharing the ethos’ of our Ethos contributors. This week, we’re making that a tradition. Here’s the ethos of Future Library’s very own Anne Beate Hovind, chair of the Future Library Trust, who featured on page 76 of Ethos 21. Anne, what’s your ethos?

“It’s creating hope and it’s a choice I make and I decided to make every day to creative practical utopias. I think I totally believe that if we all do that, we can make big changes.”

You can read more about the Future Library – an artwork and ode to both nature and reading, created by Katie Paterson, in which a Norwegian forest is growing a library of 100 books that will be published a century from now – in our Ethos 21 “The hundred year books” feature.

🚜 “You can’t plough a field simply by turning it over in your mind,” said Gordon B. Hinckley, American religious leader.

🌱 “Nature is fuel for the soul. Often, when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energised is to connect with nature.” said Richard Ryan, a psychology professor at The University of Rochester.

🧠 “When your body is busy, your mind is distracted,” said Fiona Shaw, founder of Ethos and writer of our ‘Ethos on: health and wellbeing’ feature in our current issue.

Did you know that in 2018, for the first time ever, the number of people over 65 was higher than the number of children under 5? And this gap is widening. By the year 2030, the number of people aged 60 and above will rise globally to 1.4 billion 🤯🤯

🌝 This is the era of the sexagenarians to the centenarians. You know, those old enough to remember the first moon landing.

Which is why, in our latest issue of Ethos, columnist Luca Sabia talks all things silver marketing; with businesses missing a key demographic when they fail to adjust their marketing tactics to an older audience🤦‍♂️

After all, silver foxes are worth their weight in gold 🩶
