The birth of one Pesky Seagull
I never thought a visit to Maplins to buy a cable for my home CCTV system would have such an impact on my life! I was leaving the shop when the dji display had grabbed my attention. I had previously tried flying the cheap helicopters and even a toy drone with little success, but a basic video clip I had recently seen online of a friends family being filmed from a drone had already got me curious but never really thought anything more of it. It took me about 30 minutes of self debate to make the most random and expensive whim purchase of my life and have never looked back since!
Rushing home to unbox it, eager to see what it could do, my first flight was a complete disaster, crashing into my kitchen door, breaking a propellor, not knowing how to shut the engines off, never mind the grief I got for it!! Therefore, before my second flight I thought it may be wise to read the instructions a little and take it to an open field! (I still have this video, it’s pretty hilarious watching back now as I attempted to comprehend the controls)
I always had an interest in videography and had filmed a few weddings for friends and family over 20 years ago using my trusty old camcorder but didn’t pursue this as my career in aviation took off, which is always funny when people tell me that they hope I don’t hang around airports as I have been doing just that, daily for 25 years!
Suddenly I had a new hobby, one that combined flying, gadgets, making videos etc! Shortly after, I asked the organiser of a local family obstacle event myself and the family were participating in if I could bring my drone along and he agreed. At this point I realised the potential of this technology and have been practising ever since. I was even using it with engines off as an handheld action camera for the early videos to complement the air stuff. (my equipment has since grown!)
