It’s the first week of summer holidays in Herefordshire! If you’re jetting off into the sunshine, treating yourself to a countryside getaway or simply enjoying a book and a cold drink in your garden, we want to see what you’re reading. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing some summer reading ideas of our own too.

Here’s Grasping the Nettle by Tamsin Westhorpe, which made its way to sunny Spain! Tamsin’s book is the perfect inspiring memoir to add to your poolside TBR, especially if you love gardening but prefer to avoid weeding in the heat. What will you be reading this summer?

Meet our fantastic postman, Tony. Not only does he graciously wait while we rush to get your orders out on time, he’s also a bookworm like us. We were delighted when he picked up Canal Pushers by Andy Griffee to enjoy as his lunchtime read! We look forward to his daily updates on the latest plot twist - it's almost as exciting as when we were being pulled into Jack Johnson’s adventures for the first time. If he visits your house in his rounds, no spoilers please!

An evening at Hatchards Piccadilly was the perfect way to celebrate the launch of Inside Vogue House! It was great to share a toast with so many friends and supporters, particularly the contributors who worked inside the iconic building and shared their stories. And so fitting to be celebrating in another iconic West End location full of words & images.

Inside Vogue House hits the shelves next week! A fascinating look at the history of London’s iconic Vogue House, come behind the scenes with a former Tatler art director to discover the world famous magazines produced there and the stories of the people who made them great. We love spotting our first snowdrop of the year; for us it symbolises the beginning of the end to frosty weather and the first sign that spring is nearly here. Come along to the Courtyard 10am-2am to swap your seeds or cuttings, and get some gardening advice (or impart your own knowledge). At 11am, catch Tamsin’s talk ‘Plan for your best ever summer garden’. Admission is free!

We were so excited to see an article by our lovely author Maggie Waldman in The Friend magazine! As part of the books special, Maggie discussed her inspiration for writing the first biography of our founder Henry Stanley Newman. As The Friend’s longest-serving editor, we’re sure he’d be delighted that we’re continuing his legacy.

2023 was a wonderful year for the Orphans Publishing team!

The 150th anniversary of Orphans Press meant year-long birthday celebrations, and we released some fab new additions to our list. In particular we were proud to celebrate our founder Henry Stanley Newman and show off our print heritage. Our 151st year is looking just as exciting, so stay tuned for some bookish announcements coming soon that will put the focus onto the fabulous world of fashion, culture and more...

Across the first three books - Canal Pushers, River Rats and Oxford Blues - 10 people have died. But were they all innocent victims? You’ll have to read them all to find out!

It’s day nine of our 12 days of Christmas and today’s book is the evocative novel The Jesse Tree, inspired by a real-life still unsolved true crime that took place not far from Orphans HQ. In September 1987 (the ninth month of the year), Simon Dale was murdered at Heath House in Shropshire. No one was ever convicted of the crime. Author Linda Hurcombe has woven the stranger-than-fiction true facts of the case into a coming of age novel with warmth and charm, featuring a cast of colourful characters. Highly recommended for children and adults alike.

Day 8 of our bookish 12 Days of Christmas and we’re going back to the eighties to discover what led to choose the garden path and forge a career working with plants and the people who love them.
