It’s the first week of summer holidays in Herefordshire! If you’re jetting off into the sunshine, treating yourself to a countryside getaway or simply enjoying a book and a cold drink in your garden, we want to see what you’re reading. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing some summer reading ideas of our own too.

Here’s Grasping the Nettle by Tamsin Westhorpe, which made its way to sunny Spain! Tamsin’s book is the perfect inspiring memoir to add to your poolside TBR, especially if you love gardening but prefer to avoid weeding in the heat. What will you be reading this summer?

Meet our fantastic postman, Tony. Not only does he graciously wait while we rush to get your orders out on time, he’s also a bookworm like us. We were delighted when he picked up Canal Pushers by Andy Griffee to enjoy as his lunchtime read! We look forward to his daily updates on the latest plot twist - it's almost as exciting as when we were being pulled into Jack Johnson’s adventures for the first time. If he visits your house in his rounds, no spoilers please!

An evening at Hatchards Piccadilly was the perfect way to celebrate the launch of Inside Vogue House! It was great to share a toast with so many friends and supporters, particularly the contributors who worked inside the iconic building and shared their stories. And so fitting to be celebrating in another iconic West End location full of words & images.

Thanks again to everyone who joined us - if you missed out, don’t fret! Get your copy here: https://bit.ly/insidevoguehouse

Inside Vogue House hits the shelves next week! A fascinating look at the history of London’s iconic Vogue House, come behind the scenes with a former Tatler art director to discover the world famous magazines produced there and the stories of the people who made them great. It wouldn’t be an Orphans Publishing book without vivid endpapers, and we think we might just have outdone ourselves with these designs featuring the brilliant illustrations of Geoff Waring. We love spotting our first snowdrop of the year; for us it symbolises the beginning of the end to frosty weather and the first sign that spring is nearly here. On the blog, we’ve listed some of our favourite places to see them without straying too far from our Herefordshire HQ (spoiler alert - there’s a ‘Galanthophiles’ plug hidden in there too!).

The commute to the Orphans office is already a beautiful one, but spotting this Roma Gypsy caravan nestled under a crisp blue sky brought us even more joy! It reminds us of The Jesse Tree, and the adventures of Summer Locke and Robin Swallow.

We were so excited to see an article by our lovely author Maggie Waldman in The Friend magazine! As part of the books special, Maggie discussed her inspiration for writing the first biography of our founder Henry Stanley Newman. As The Friend’s longest-serving editor, we’re sure he’d be delighted that we’re continuing his legacy.

If you’d like to find out more about our founder, A Friend In Deed is available online and in your favourite indie bookshop.

2023 was a wonderful year for the Orphans Publishing team!

The 150th anniversary of Orphans Press meant year-long birthday celebrations, and we released some fab new additions to our list. In particular we were proud to celebrate our founder Henry Stanley Newman and show off our print heritage. On day 10 of our festive countdown we’re featuring Andy Griffee's Johnson & Wilde crime mystery series, set on the UK’s canals and waterways. Across the first three books - Canal Pushers, River Rats and Oxford Blues - 10 people have died. But were they all innocent victims? You’ll have to read them all to find out!

It’s day nine of our 12 days of Christmas and today’s book is the evocative novel The Jesse Tree, inspired by a real-life still unsolved true crime that took place not far from Orphans HQ. In September 1987 (the ninth month of the year), Simon Dale was murdered at Heath House in Shropshire. No one was ever convicted of the crime. Author Linda Hurcombe has woven the stranger-than-fiction true facts of the case into a coming of age novel with warmth and charm, featuring a cast of colourful characters. Highly recommended for children and adults alike.

“If forced to pinpoint the moment I chose my career, it might have been way back in the mid 1980s, when I was a young teenager…”

Day 8 of our bookish 12 Days of Christmas and we’re going back to the eighties to discover what led to choose the garden path and forge a career working with plants and the people who love them. Full of horticultural humour, if you haven’t read this yet you’re in for a treat, including naked neighbours, gnomes on live TV and Tamsin’s trademark tips and inspiration throughout.

“The Orphan Home was opened … and at Christmas we had seven children. Their names were Annie, Arthur, Agnes, Albert, Ann, Teddie and Willie.”

On the seventh day of our countdown to Christmas we’re remembering the seven young children who lived in the Orphan Homes opened by our founder, Henry Stanley Newman, in 1869. You can read all about the fascinating and touching story of how our business came to be, and why, in The Story of the Orphan Homes, Leominster, reissued in a beautiful new hardback heritage-inspired edition, with custom endpapers and gold-foiled jacket. A pocket-sized delight perfect for local history lovers.

On day 5 of our bookish countdown to Christmas, we’re celebrating legendary producer and ‘fifth Beatle’ George Martin!

Kenneth Womack’s two part biography traces Martin’s journey to becoming head of Parlophone Records, the landmark albums he created with the Fab 4, and the post-Beatles years.

Sound Pictures and Maximum Volume are available online, or head to your favourite indie bookshop.

We’re dedicating the third day of our Christmas countdown to Geezers: On Camp with the SAS, to mark the 3 years author Monica Lavers spent working at Hereford garrison with a front line view of the world’s most elite soldiers.

It can be hard to get time to sit down and curl up with a book at this busy, festive time of year, so Geezers is now available on Audible, or anywhere else you like to listen! Grab a copy and take a rare insider’s glimpse into a Herefordshire secret world with you on your Christmas travels.

It’s day 2 of our countdown to Christmas, and we’re celebrating The Galanthophiles! Written by our 2 wonderful authors Jane Kilpatrick and Jennifer Harmer, The Galanthophiles shares the stories of the people who collected, grew and preserved snowdrops, and who passed on their knowledge of the much-loved species. We’re counting down to Christmas by sharing 12 titles over 12 days ✨

Day 1 is dedicated to Henry Stanley Newman, our founder and the man who started it all! One of history’s unsung heroes, Henry Stanley’s good deeds included implementing First Day Schools for men and women, founding the Orphan Homes in 1869, and many more acts of kindness that quietly helped to transform a town. He was a remarkable man and we’re so excited to share his story for the first time, nestled in beautiful printed goodness - from patterned endpapers to illustrated dropcaps.

A Friend in Deed: The Life of Henry Stanley Newman is available everywhere now!
