It’s easy to miss all the bird song, I stopped and suddenly noticed the all the noise! Guide to Rudyard below 👇
🚤 What to see and do 🚤
You can stroll around the main end of the lake where victorians used to promenade, explore the small visitor centre or just watch the boats float by. There is a short walk, past Rudyard Cafe to a little bbq area with picnic benches and a bird hut. You can walk around the entire lake, on a 4.5 mile circular walk. It’s an easy enough route to follow but the path that runs alongside the train can get muddy! The mini steam train is currently changing owners so it’s best to find the latest details online.
🍦 Rudyard cafe 🍦
Cute little waterside cafe with covered outdoor seating perfect for enjoying a cuppa with a lakeside view. They have the friendliest staff serving fresh hearty soups, oatcakes, baps, hot drinks and lots of homemade treats. @rudyardlakecafe
🍺 Rudyard Hotel 🍺
Rudyard hotel has a huge beer garden which is great to let the kids run around while you have a drink. They have a main menu full of pub favourites and a carvery room too! They have a coffee shop around the back which sell takeaway drinks, ice creams and treats. @hotelrudyard
☕️ Rudyard sailing club ☕️
New residents @minibeansonthelake offer @buxtoncoffeeroasters coffee, chai lattes and cakes. @rudyard_lake_sailing_club
🚗 Parking 🚗
The Rudyard Hotel carpark is right next to the lake so a good starting place for short walks. You can park for £3, or free, if you spend over £5 with them. There is pay and display parking right next to the lake and free parking at the train station, but they are both small and get very busy. If you are planning on the full circular walk you can park at Rudyard Lake north carpark at the far end of the lake. Again, it’s small and busy.
Up to date as of April 2024.

Winter at @altontowers ❄️
Great for kids, just wrap up warm! 🧣 🌲 🎢
💤 Quiet days with less queues 💤
We took advantage of the December opening days. Perfect for kids because only the kids rides are open. March also tends to be loads quieter before the Easter holiday.
⭐️ Entrance deals ⭐️
We got some super off-peak ‘Discovery’ @merlinannualpass in the Black Friday sale (last chance 10th December 2023). Otherwise, the December opening days are around £18-23pp. Under 3’s are free.
🚗 Parking tips 🚗
During the December opening, you can get free express parking if you get there early enough. If you park in the main carpark it’s a long walk without the monorail.
Dragon’s Back in a dust storm 🐉
🕰️ 2.5 hours
🗺️ 3.5 miles
⛰️ 394m assent
Chrome hill and Parkhouse hill have been on my list for a while. Known as the Dragons back, it definitely felt like scaling the spines of a dragon at the sketchier points, you will need sturdy boots. The downhills over crumbling stones and steep descents are bum-sliders, so I wouldn’t wear your best shorts.
We went during the Saharan dust storm where sunlight reflects off reddish sand particles creating vibrant hues in the sky, we got to see some lovely pink and orange tints to the sunset.

It’s surprising how much the boats float around when they look so still.
Lovely morning light too, not sure I’ve ever made it so early in the day before!

Ramshaw Rocks 📍
Much less travelled than The Roches and Hen Cloud making it an escape from the crowds when it’s busy, but no less beautiful.

Tittesworth in the 90’s
Once I’d finished the Tittesworth print I had a look through some old home videos that my grandad had taken. I found this one of the Tittesworth playpark from around 1990. I’m the little girl in the white cardie at the front with my Nanna. I’ve always remembered the old wooden playpark fondly but I think I’ve misremembered the size - it seemed so much bigger to me at the time!
Did you go to Tittesworth playpark in the 90’s and is this how you remember it?
