We wanted to translate “noisy” or “difficult” into Japanese. We translated it wrong – so we’re actually Innocence Records once translated.

Our Story

MUZAI is an independent record label founded in 2008 to put out music on CDR from our friends. Since then, the label has expanded to include bands outside of the noise-rock genre and has been featured in the New Zealand Herald, Noisy, BBC 6 Music and countless radio stations across the globe.

It’s founders have gone from cutting out covers and gluing together digipacks to releasing on vinyl and cassette formats, and now going back to cutting and gluing things together again. MUZAI believes in undertaking bespoke releases (having released on a floppy disk at one stage for Ipswich’s “Live in Dunedin” release) and seldom look at doing second runs. Primarily because MUZAI knows you probably have access to digital mediums already.
