Blood cancer patients in England will be among the first in the world to have access to a new “Trojan horse” treatment, health officials have announced.

The targeted therapy can stop myeloma from progressing by nearly three times as long as existing treatments, studies suggest.

It is estimated that around 1,500 patients a year with multiple myeloma – an incurable cancer of the bone marrow – will benefit from the treatment.

The availability of candidates for jobs has increased at the biggest rate for more than four years, according to recruiters.

A survey by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) pointed to a further reduction in recruitment activity by firms in May.

Permanent placements fell last month and the availability of candidates increased at the quickest rate for nearly four-and-a-half years amid reports of redundancies and fewer job opportunities, said the report, based on data from 400 recruitment agencies.

Thomas Frank has been confirmed as Tottenham’s new head coach on a three-year deal.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy moved swiftly for former Brentford boss Frank after they dismissed Ange Postecoglou only 16 days on from Europa League glory.

Following negotiations with Brentford during the past week over Frank’s release clause and backroom staff, the 51-year-old has been announced as Tottenham head coach and will bring with him Justin Cochrane, who will return to the club where he started his coaching journey more than a decade ago.

Here's what we know so far after Gatwick-bound plane crashes in India 👇

Only one passenger has reportedly survived after a plane bound for Gatwick Airport crashed shortly after take-off in India.

The Air India aircraft departed from Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat state with more than 240 people on board, including 53 British nationals, on Thursday.

– What happened?

Air India’s flight 171, from Ahmedabad to Gatwick, took off at 1.38pm local time (9.08am BST), according to the airline.

– Who was on board?

The plane was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, according to Air India.

– How many casualties have there been?

Officials initially said it appeared as though all those on board died but The Hindustan Times reported that one Briton has survived.

– What caused the crash?

It is not yet known what the cause of the accident was.

– How has the UK responded?

Downing Street said the public should be prepared for a significant loss of British lives.
