The Queen o' t' owd Thack, South Milford

In a bid to get away from the buzz of the city centre around Christmas, I found myself in a cosy country pub in South Milford.

South Milford Against Flooding (SMAF) are on AMBER ALERT this evening due to an increased flood risk in South Milford.

SMAF volunteers are forming a rota to ensure that the culvert screen at the bottom of Wain Gap is kept clear of debris.

You will be aware that a fund raising campaign is live, raising much needed funds for the construction of a bund (essentially a large dam) upstream.

Check out our GoFundme page to learn about why we need urgent flood prevention measures and to make a donation.

First there was Covid. Then Avian Flu...

A handful of optimistic Hillam News readers returned to Selby Farmers' Christmas Sale last Christmas (2022) after two years' absence forced by Covid.

Others may have been deterred by a new disease, Avian or Bird Flu. The press warned there would be sky-high prices after 40pc of the UK free-range flock destined for Christmas 2022 was culled in a fight against bird flu.

And at Christmas 2022 there were indeed only 8 geese on offer at Selby Farmers’ Christmas Market, with just four ducks and a mere 259 turkeys.

Against the background of Morrisons demanding £140.00 just for a turkey, bidding for popular 5kg turkeys kicked off at over £50.00. Larger turkey prices were cheaper and led the collapse. Then the bottom fell out of the market for ‘family’ weights.

Your correspondent had secured his Christmas dinner before prices for oven ready farm fresh birds stabilised, at around £15.00 apiece. He also got two of those geese. Absolute beauties at well under the feared £100.00 each.

There is a well-known saying (at least among farmers):
"A forecast famine never happens.”

Dear Hillam News,
I liked Julie Sadler’s article about books (and shy men). Thanks for the publicity! It prompted me to visit Sue Woodhall’s ‘What the Dickens’ coffee morning, in the Community Centre (every Wednesday 10:30am to 12:30am). The library has received a commendation from Queen Camilla, a famous bookworm. Also been visited by our new MP.
I’ve now remembered how relaxing a good read can be. In my case mainly late night and early morning. Thanks.
Sue is promoting a book club based on the library and it welcomes men. Just ring her on 07500450249.
Following the Hillam News article, she is now promoting the two books by sheep farmer James Rebanks as her READ OF THE WEEK. And now there’s another one, by Mrs Rebanks, with recipes.
