On Global Wind Day (15th June) we appreciate the power of the wind. Sensible sailors try to avoid making passages in a gale, but it’s not always possible to avoid them. Tom Cunliffe’s Living Through the Gale provides sound advice if you happen to get caught out.

On this day (14th June) in 1968 a young merchant seaman set off from Falmouth to sail non-stop around the world. It hadn’t been done before. Would it be possible? Just – as Robin Knox-Johnston was the only one who set off that year to succeed. From that voyage and many others, Robin has immense knowledge on sailing and seamanship which he imparts through his books.

Amid all the stories of heroics on D-Day, John Quirk tells the story of Alexander North Hardy who captained the 60-metre steam yacht Valena as a minesweeper. She was previously privately owned by a millionaire and went into D-Day with the owner’s quarters intact – including a four-poster bed and a marble bathroom! Read about it in Quirky History which recounts maritime moments most history books don’t mention:

On this day (17th May) in 1749, Edward Jenner was born. In Gloucestershire his experiments with milkmaids and cowpox saw the first vaccinations for smallpox which was a killer at the time. His story is told in Quirky History which tells of 25 historical incidents which don’t get mentioned in many history books:

On this day (8th May) exactly one hundred years ago (1924), Arthur Ransome (author of Swallows & Amazons) married Evgenia Shelepina (Trotsky’s secretary). Shortly afterwards they set off on their honeymoon cruise on the river Ya in Latvia. This is described in Racundra’s Third Cruise, a wonderful insight into the Baltic region between the two world wars, but also contains tales of snakes and mice that even the children in Swallows & Amazons might have found difficult to deal with. Evgenia brought one with her and left because of the other!
