Remember all that rain we had for weeks (it felt like years!) on end? Well, nature has the most magical way of brightening our lives - not just giving us sunny days, but by providing us with a bumper crop of wildflowers this year!

All that rain may just have been worth it!

Have you spotted any good patches of wildflowers? 🌸

HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE!

Today marks the beginning of the astronomical summer, and the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Whilst summer has arrived here north of the equator, winter has arrived in the southern hemisphere. The sun will not set at the North Pole, and at the South Pole it will not rise.

Today is day of the year with the most hours of sunlight, and the shortest night as the sun reaches its highest possible point at around 9.50pm in the UK.

Let’s hope that the weather takes note and delivers a warm and balmy summer season ahead!

As summer season begins and the sun starts to shine more and warm things up, many of us will try to cool off with a swim or paddle in one of the many water environments we are lucky enough to have nearby.

Cornwall is surrounded by ocean water, and has a beautiful network of rivers, lakes and reservoirs, meaning the temptation to take a dip can be very appealing. But it’s critical that we enjoy our gorgeous waters safely.

This week is Drowning Prevention Week and is deliberately timed ahead of the school summer holidays when children spend more time outdoors and when vital water safety skills can help keep children safe.

No one should drown, and with the right water safety education – such as knowledge of the Water Safety Code – accidental drownings are preventable.

Why not take a look at the Water Safety Code online and have a chat with the young people in your life to help spread the safety knowledge.

Water can be fun and safe for everyone.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

Wishing a very happy Father's Day to everyone who is lucky enough to play that role! Here's to the love, support and encouragement given by all the Dads, Step-Dads, Grandads, and people taking the role of Dad!

Today can be a wonderful one but it can also be hard for many people, so however you're feeling and whatever today looks like for you, have a lovely Sunday.

We hope you have a fantastic day whether you're gathering with family, or sending love from afar - thank you for everything you do!

May you get that extra hour in bed and a cup of tea (or perhaps something a little stronger later on!) 🤞🏼

Now that summer is (allegedly!) here, many of us find ourselves spending a good deal more time outside in the fantastic landscapes our beautiful part of the world has to offer.

Getting out and about by bike can be an excellent way to explore our locality, and it’s possible to clock up a considerable number of miles without even realising!

This week is Bike Week, the UK’s biggest awareness-raising moment of the year for cycling. It’s a time to remind ourselves of all the positives that riding a bike can bring, both to our own health and wellbeing, as well as the wider impacts on our communities and the planet.

If you fancy heading out on two wheels and exploring our lovely area, did you know that Launceston is on the National Cycle Network which is part of a 14,000 mile network of bike trails across the UK? The Velowest section of the network is a way-marked cycle tour of Cornwall spurring off National Cycle Network (NCN) Route (27 which takes in Bude, the spectacular unspoilt north Cornwall coast and the wild, rugged northern edge of Bodmin Moor. The route joins the Camel Trail and returns via the Eden Proiect, the Luxulyan Valley and ancient towns of Bodmin, Launceston and Tavistock. The full route is 250 km and is mostly on quiet roads with some off-road sections.

So, if you’re looking for a challenge from your own front doorstep, this might be the trail for you!

"Sandy Cooper has come a long way since the days of sitting out on her parents’ porch in a never-ending Texan summer, clipping the hair around her dad’s head from the age of 12."

We had the best time chatting away to Sandy for the summer issue of Launceston Life. She is passionate about providing a safe space for everyone at her barbershop on Church Street, The Mad American Barbershop, and has a stellar team of barbers working alongside her.

With Father’s Day just around the corner this coming Sunday, what better time than the week preceding it to think about men’s health?! Men’s Health Week is observed each year and is an excellent opportunity to engage fathers, brothers, sons and male friends in discussions about their health.

Aiming to raise awareness about the health challenges faced by men, and to promote strategies for better physical and mental well-being, this week encourages men to talk all things health.

Shining the spotlight on the unique health concerns impacting men, this week hopes to give a gentle reminder of the importance of addressing and managing health issues proactively.

Men are encouraged to take charge of their well-being, to make informed decisions about their lifestyle choices, and to seek appropriate medical support when needed.

In the wake of King Charles’ recent prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, the fitting theme this year is “Let’s talk prostate (and everything else mens health!)”.

We’re told that men don’t talk enough, so let’s change the narrative and get the chat
started!

On Tuesday 6 June 1944, over 150,000 Allied troops landed by sea and air on five beaches in Normandy, France. Codenamed Operation Overlord, D-Day was the largest amphibious invasion ever assembled, before or since, and was the start of an Allied campaign in north-west Europe which would ultimately liberate Western Europe and end World War 2.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of this carefully orchestrated and hard-fought mission, and we remember those lost who never made it back to their home shores.

There are numerous events locally including a range of activities in South Petherwin, where a beacon will be lit in the evening, as well as a beacon at Lewannick.

There is also a D-Day 80th Anniversary display, courtesy of Lawrence House Museum at Launceston Library for a time.

We will remember them.

Hello June! Just a few days into the sixth month of the year, and whilst the weather might not quite be on side today, it really feels as though summer has arrived!

The month of long days and the solstice, of wild flowers and calm seas is here and brings with it so many events and social occasions.

Wimbledon kicks off later this month, followed by Glastonbury Festival, and there’s also Fathers Day to look forward to!

The 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings is on 6 June (look out for local commemorations), and the biggest event of the Cornish Calendar kicks off on the same day for three days of the best the Duchy has to offer - The Royal Cornwall Show!

With an already packed June in prospect, it’s definitely time to enjoy all those lovely strawberries, and make the most of the light!

What a lovely idea! 💙

As is so often the case during school holidays, the weather so far this half term has been a tad unsettled - but this looks set to change from tomorrow when a front of high pressure is forecast to move in…..

Perfect for some beach days with the kids if you’re already struggling to find things to occupy and entertain your brood!

With a picnic in tow, and the cost of just the fuel and parking (at some beaches), a sunny beach day can be the ultimate day out, and we are lucky enough to have hundreds of them on our doorstep!

Tell us your favourite beaches for a day out with your family, and what you pack to take along for a fun time by all!
