Autumn is most definitely here 🍁🍂

We’re not sure about you, but we are enjoying the cosy evenings, the warm drinks, spiced apple pies with custard, warming casseroles, and snuggling with loved ones.

This not-quite-summer-anymore, but not-quite-winter-yet period gives us the best of seasons - not cold enough to shiver when out and about, not hot enough to overheat and worry about our canine friends on a walk now……. Not even quite cold enough for boots just yet, so we will be clinging on to our flip flops for as long as we can! Who’s with us?!

In a seemingly ever-trickier world to navigate, well-being of mind is more vital than ever. Today is World Mental Health Day and is aimed at raising awareness of mental health problems.

More and more of us are aware of mental health, yet so many of us still aren't getting the right support. Awareness is just the start, in the hope it can pave the way to help.

If you’re struggling with your mental health, there are options locally if you feel as though you’d like to reach out for help. Remember, there’s always a listening ear 💙

Take this glorious weather as your cue to get out and take some long walks with your four-legged friends - after all, it is National Walk Your Dog Week this coming week!

Where will your adventures take you?

October has arrived, and whilst we are in for a mini heatwave over the next week or so, the shorter days are already impacting on early morning and night time temperatures. The chillier starts and evenings have had us reaching for cosy knits and blankets and that thermostat has been edging up.

Whilst energy costs aren’t quite so high as we were seeing last year, they are still on the steep side, but it’s vital to keep warm and well this coming winter.

Cornwall Council have made a Winter Wellbeing guide which gives tips on staying warm, switching energy tariffs to save money, servicing heating systems, keeping moving to stay warm and having regular hot meals and drinks as well move toward the colder part of the year.

Deliveries of our second issue of Redruth Life magazine began earlier this week and should be hitting your doormat very soon (if not, already!).

Again, we’ve met some wonderful people from across the Redruth community, and we hope you enjoy reading all about them and the fantastic things going on in your town!

It’s definitely feeling a little more autumnal, so why not snuggle down with a cuppa and have a read 🍂🍁

Pinch, punch! Well, it’s 1st October, and not only does spooky season start about now, but the last of the seasonal dog restrictions on beaches are lifted and there are no longer limitations on beaches for walking your canine friend.

Hands up whose pup is straining at the leash to get out there and have a good run about on the sand today!

We’ve no idea where this month has gone, but it’s the end of September, and payday for so many of us - with so many lovely businesses here locally, we want to know if you’re having a payday treat from any of our local traders. Whether it’s a cake from your favourite bakers, a meal at a local eatery, a new jumper from a local boutique, a piece of furniture from a fabulous emporium, or even a little bit of home maintenance or improvement from a local tradesperson. There are so many fabulous businesses here, we want to hear your shout-outs for keeping things local!

Myttin da, or good morning in Cornish! A language that can be traced back around 4000 years, Cornish found itself almost dead as long ago as the 1700’s, but has in recent years found itself making a comeback.

It’s revitalisation and resurgence has seen a significant surge in the past five years with more people than ever learning and speaking Cornish.

So given that today is the European Day of Languages, why not try and learn a few words in Cornish yourself - it might spark a love for our ancient language!

Times may have felt challenging for many of us lately, but there is much to be thankful for. It’s easy enough to overlook the little things that bring us quality of life, and the efforts that others make - all too often we find ourselves too wrapped up in our own lives to recognise and show appreciation for things that others do for us, or to notice the small stuff. So, as today just so happens to be World Gratitude Day, here’s a reminder of the importance of expressing gratitude by thanking people and appreciating their efforts. Just practicing gratitude can shift one’s mindset to a more positive outlook!

What are you grateful for today?

This week, it may require us dodging a shower or two, but getting outside for a walk or going out on a bike is always a good idea! And if it has the knock-on effect of reducing traffic congestion, and giving us cleaner air, it can only be a good thing! So if you’re able to cycle, walk, or get public transport to work, school or the shops, why not give it a go for a day or two now and then?

Living so close to the coast, many of us spend time at the beach on a regular basis and are aware of just how lucky we are to have access to these beautiful places. Being regular visitors to our beaches, the increasing levels of rubbish and plastic waste is ever more noticeable and the importance of keeping these places waste free has never been greater.

The Great British Beach Clean is a week-long citizen science event run by The Marine Conservation Society where hundreds of beach cleans take place up and down the UK.

The This year's Great British Beach Clean takes place this weekend between Friday 15th - Sunday 24th September 2023. It's easy to get involved. Simply find a beach clean near you or organise your own.

If you’d like to join in, or even organise your own, there are lots of guides and resources available to help you get set up at www.mscuk.org.

Whilst the meteorological calendar says it’s Autumn, the weather certainly hasn’t seemed like it - temperatures have dropped a few degrees, and the days are noticeably shorter, but it really doesn’t feel Autumnal just yet. One thing is for sure, it’s coming! Soon we’ll be crunching through crispy fallen leaves, seeing our breath mist on the cold air, and enjoying hot drinks and comfort food - what’s your favourite thing about autumn here?

Just over a week in to September, and Cornwall is already noticeably quieter - still a little busy, but nothing like the crazy summer holiday rush. And with the fiery sunsets September has already delivered, it’s fantastic to be able to pop to the beach after school or work once again, and enjoy the show Mother Nature puts on at sundown. Living here in this beautiful part of the world, we are so very lucky that we get to enjoy this amazing countryside and coast year-round!

📣📣 WOSSON REDRUTH!!! 📣📣

We’ve had some wonderful feedback about our first issue and it sounds as though many of you have really enjoyed reading our new magazine!

We’re pleased to say that we’ve been busy working on your Autumn issue of Redruth Life and have again loved getting into the community and meeting many of you!

We know how much you love reading about local events going on in the area, so as we are working on your autumn issue of Redruth Life we’d love to hear from any groups, businesses or individuals that may have some amazing autumn events in the pipeline!

Whether it's a new group being set up in the community, a special autumnal market, an art exhibition, workshop, half-term fun, Halloween or live music event, we would love to hear all about it and help spread the word to the community.

If you have an event coming up between 2nd October and 2nd December, please get in touch! Email the details of your group or event to [email protected] before 8 August.

Hello September! Just like that, August is over and we are entering the first month of the autumnal season…..having said that, “summer” seems to have been over since June with us seeing an unseasonably large amount of rain!

Although autumn is a time of letting things go, just as the trees let go of their leaves, it’s also a time to embrace the new and to start afresh after a summer of holidays, socialising and less-strict routines.

What will you be embracing when we get back to routine, the holidays are over and the kids back at school?
