Autumn is most definitely here šŸšŸ‚

Weā€™re not sure about you, but we are enjoying the cosy evenings, the warm drinks, spiced apple pies with custard, warming casseroles, and snuggling with loved ones.

This not-quite-summer-anymore, but not-quite-winter-yet period gives us the best of seasons - not cold enough to shiver when out and about, not hot enough to overheat and worry about our canine friends on a walk nowā€¦ā€¦. Not even quite cold enough for boots just yet, so we will be clinging on to our flip flops for as long as we can! Whoā€™s with us?!

In a seemingly ever-trickier world to navigate, well-being of mind is more vital than ever. Today is World Mental Health Day and is aimed at raising awareness of mental health problems.

More and more of us are aware of mental health, yet so many of us still aren't getting the right support. Awareness is just the start, in the hope it can pave the way to help.

If youā€™re struggling with your mental health, there are options locally if you feel as though youā€™d like to reach out for help. Remember, thereā€™s always a listening ear šŸ’™

October has arrived, and whilst we are in for a mini heatwave over the next week or so, the shorter days are already impacting on early morning and night time temperatures. The chillier starts and evenings have had us reaching for cosy knits and blankets and that thermostat has been edging up.

Whilst energy costs arenā€™t quite so high as we were seeing last year, they are still on the steep side, but itā€™s vital to keep warm and well this coming winter.

Cornwall Council have made a Winter Wellbeing guide which gives tips on staying warm, switching energy tariffs to save money, servicing heating systems, keeping moving to stay warm and having regular hot meals and drinks as well move toward the colder part of the year.

Deliveries of our second issue of Redruth Life magazine began earlier this week and should be hitting your doormat very soon (if not, already!).

Again, weā€™ve met some wonderful people from across the Redruth community, and we hope you enjoy reading all about them and the fantastic things going on in your town!

Itā€™s definitely feeling a little more autumnal, so why not snuggle down with a cuppa and have a read šŸ‚šŸ

Pinch, punch! Well, itā€™s 1st October, and not only does spooky season start about now, but the last of the seasonal dog restrictions on beaches are lifted and there are no longer limitations on beaches for walking your canine friend.

Hands up whose pup is straining at the leash to get out there and have a good run about on the sand today!

Weā€™ve no idea where this month has gone, but itā€™s the end of September, and payday for so many of us - with so many lovely businesses here locally, we want to know if youā€™re having a payday treat from any of our local traders. Whether itā€™s a cake from your favourite bakers, a meal at a local eatery, a new jumper from a local boutique, a piece of furniture from a fabulous emporium, or even a little bit of home maintenance or improvement from a local tradesperson. There are so many fabulous businesses here, we want to hear your shout-outs for keeping things local!

Myttin da, or good morning in Cornish! A language that can be traced back around 4000 years, Cornish found itself almost dead as long ago as the 1700ā€™s, but has in recent years found itself making a comeback.

Itā€™s revitalisation and resurgence has seen a significant surge in the past five years with more people than ever learning and speaking Cornish.

So given that today is the European Day of Languages, why not try and learn a few words in Cornish yourself - it might spark a love for our ancient language!

Times may have felt challenging for many of us lately, but there is much to be thankful for. Itā€™s easy enough to overlook the little things that bring us quality of life, and the efforts that others make - all too often we find ourselves too wrapped up in our own lives to recognise and show appreciation for things that others do for us, or to notice the small stuff. So, as today just so happens to be World Gratitude Day, hereā€™s a reminder of the importance of expressing gratitude by thanking people and appreciating their efforts. Just practicing gratitude can shift oneā€™s mindset to a more positive outlook!

What are you grateful for today?

This week, it may require us dodging a shower or two, but getting outside for a walk or going out on a bike is always a good idea! And if it has the knock-on effect of reducing traffic congestion, and giving us cleaner air, it can only be a good thing! So if youā€™re able to cycle, walk, or get public transport to work, school or the shops, why not give it a go for a day or two now and then?

Living so close to the coast, many of us spend time at the beach on a regular basis and are aware of just how lucky we are to have access to these beautiful places. Being regular visitors to our beaches, the increasing levels of rubbish and plastic waste is ever more noticeable and the importance of keeping these places waste free has never been greater.

The Great British Beach Clean is a week-long citizen science event run by The Marine Conservation Society where hundreds of beach cleans take place up and down the UK.

The This year's Great British Beach Clean takes place this weekend between Friday 15th - Sunday 24th September 2023. It's easy to get involved. Simply find a beach clean near you or organise your own.

If youā€™d like to join in, or even organise your own, there are lots of guides and resources available to help you get set up at www.mscuk.org.

Whilst the meteorological calendar says itā€™s Autumn, the weather certainly hasnā€™t seemed like it - temperatures have dropped a few degrees, and the days are noticeably shorter, but it really doesnā€™t feel Autumnal just yet. One thing is for sure, itā€™s coming! Soon weā€™ll be crunching through crispy fallen leaves, seeing our breath mist on the cold air, and enjoying hot drinks and comfort food - whatā€™s your favourite thing about autumn here?

Just over a week in to September, and Cornwall is already noticeably quieter - still a little busy, but nothing like the crazy summer holiday rush. And with the fiery sunsets September has already delivered, itā€™s fantastic to be able to pop to the beach after school or work once again, and enjoy the show Mother Nature puts on at sundown. Living here in this beautiful part of the world, we are so very lucky that we get to enjoy this amazing countryside and coast year-round!

šŸ“£šŸ“£ WOSSON REDRUTH!!! šŸ“£šŸ“£

Weā€™ve had some wonderful feedback about our first issue and it sounds as though many of you have really enjoyed reading our new magazine!

Weā€™re pleased to say that weā€™ve been busy working on your Autumn issue of Redruth Life and have again loved getting into the community and meeting many of you!

We know how much you love reading about local events going on in the area, so as we are working on your autumn issue of Redruth Life weā€™d love to hear from any groups, businesses or individuals that may have some amazing autumn events in the pipeline!

Whether it's a new group being set up in the community, a special autumnal market, an art exhibition, workshop, half-term fun, Halloween or live music event, we would love to hear all about it and help spread the word to the community.

If you have an event coming up between 2nd October and 2nd December, please get in touch! Email the details of your group or event to [email protected] before 8 August.

Hello September! Just like that, August is over and we are entering the first month of the autumnal seasonā€¦..having said that, ā€œsummerā€ seems to have been over since June with us seeing an unseasonably large amount of rain!

Although autumn is a time of letting things go, just as the trees let go of their leaves, itā€™s also a time to embrace the new and to start afresh after a summer of holidays, socialising and less-strict routines.

What will you be embracing when we get back to routine, the holidays are over and the kids back at school?

NEXT WEEK IN LONDONā€¦
ā€˜The Redruth Albany Clubā€™, Kingsgate Project Space as part of Pebble / Shoe

Opening event : Friday, 5pm - 9pm....All Welcome
the again on Saturday, 12am - 5pm

Weā€™re excited to be heading to London next week after an invitation from Kingsgate Project Space to be part of their Pebble / Shoe project, a series of artist led project takeovers of the space. The invitation was simple, come and do whatever youā€™d like. As we recently staged an exhibition in a Rugby Club with a group of artists all working in Redruth, our response was to repeat this, but this time take the Rugby Club to the gallery.

This will be a version of the Redruth Albany Club show we staged back in June, featuring works by the same 9 artists and all nestled alongside many things from the clubhouse itself, including memorabilia, furniture, dartboards and even possibly bar staff. Part exhibition, part social club. A little slice of Redruth in London for two days.

Come along and join us for a drink and a dance, and to see and enjoy all that the Redruth Albany Club has to offer. All very welcome.

Happy National Dog Day! A day to celebrate dogs around the world and the companionship and loyalty that they show to us. They really are loyal little beings!

Are you off out with your four legged friend for a good yomp to celebrate? Weā€™re very spoiled in this part of the world (as are our dogs!) for amazing routes and scenery in which to walk. Tell us where your dogā€™s favourite walk is šŸ¶

The wait is finally over today for thousands of young people as they finally get their GCSE results - it can be a day of highs and lows, particularly if you donā€™t get the results you were hoping for.

Do speak to teachers and staff at your school or college if your results werenā€™t what youā€™d hoped, as there are always new routes you hadnā€™t perhaps anticipated.

Wishing everyone the very best of luck!

Today is World Photography Day, a day to appreciate and celebrate the art, science and history of photography!

We think we live in an exceptionally photogenic and creative corner of the globe, and would love to see your shots - whether they be of the local area, or simply encapsulate what itā€™s like to live here.

Show us what you can do - letā€™s get inspired!

Congratulations to everyone getting their Aā€™Level results today!

After all the hard work, thereā€™s so much pressure surrounding Aā€™Level results - whether you got the grades you were hoping for, or if youā€™re disappointed with the outcome, youā€™ve much to be proud of, and though it may feel like it, itā€™s not the end of the world if you didnā€™t quite get those grades.

If you didnā€™t achieve what you were hoping to, firstly speak to your school or college who will be able to chat through your options with you. But remember, there are so many routes you can take - whether you go through clearing, take a gap year, resit, get a professional qualification, learn on the job, become an apprentice or go travelling, Aā€™ Levels are a gateway to your future and thatā€™s exciting!

Finallyā€¦ā€¦and we donā€™t want to jinx things here, but it looks as though we have some fine and slightly more usual summer weather with us for a few days!

Not before time!

Weā€™re pretty lucky living in a part of the world to which people flock for their holidays, and that we donā€™t just have that one week in which to enjoy it all. Itā€™s all still here for us when the better weather returns, and we can get out into the countryside or to the beach in the evening after work if the weather looks good.

Whatā€™s your favourite thing about summer when we have it?!

We all know there are many special independent shops, cafes and businesses in our town centre that offer unique products and services that are worth shouting about!

But our community is much broader than just our town centre or main shopping area - itā€™s the industrial estates, and business parks, the shared offices and studio spaces to be found locally which house fantastic local businesses doing their best to offer great goods and services in the area, and doing it brilliantly!

We want to know about the local businesses who have made a difference and are fantastic at what they do in the area - it could be a builder, a plumber, solicitor, car repair garage, bike shop, carpet fitterā€¦ā€¦. The list is almost endless! If thereā€™s a business like this youā€™ve felt has provided a fantastic service, tell us in the comments - we want to put the spotlight on all the fantastic businesses and tradespeople in this great little town!

Today is International Cat Day, a day to celebrate one of mankindā€™s most common and ancient pets. These little feline friends hold a special place within our affections and just the simple act of stroking a cat is said to reduce stress levels - making them fantastic companions!

Pictured is our Founder, Ellieā€™s majestic cat Max who is an ace mouser and regularly brings ā€œgiftsā€ into the house for her humans - though they donā€™t feel quite so enamoured with these offerings as she thinks they should!
