Woodsmoke on a winter’s day at Cardinham Woods this week… pre-storm!

Storm Eowyn may have ripped through Cornwall, with strong winds and rain continuing over the next few days, but it won’t be long before you can pull on your coat and wellies, and head back out into the great outdoors again. On that note, where are you most looking forward to visiting for a stroll once this storm has passed?

Cornwall Council has advised everyone to take ‘extra care’ this weekend and keep up-to-date with the local weather forecasts.

There's a storm brewing 🌬🌧

Cornwall Council has advised people to take ‘extra care’ over the next few days with the arrival of Storm Eowyn, with traffic disruption, fallen trees, strong winds and heavy rain expected across the county until Monday morning.

For now, a reminder of sunnier times... Stay safe everyone!

We know that January can feel like a loooong month. This, mixed with cold, dark weather, the tightening of belts after the recent Christmas celebrations, and talk of ‘Blue Monday’, can leave us feeling a little bit glum.

It’s important to remember that your community is there for you, whether it’s in the form of your favourite pasty from a local bakery, a quick catch-up with a friend, a smile from a neighbour, or a quiet dog walk on the beach.

So if January is making you feel a little low, take some time for yourself and make the most of what your wonderful community has to offer. And remember, sunnier, warmer months are not far away!

PHOTO CORNER

We’ve seen wind, rain, snow and ice so far this year, but that doesn’t mean we’ve been short of beautiful, picture-perfect scenes. After all, we are in Cornwall!

We’re looking for photos to include in the next ‘Reader’s Photo Corner’ in the magazine, where one person’s photo will be published for the whole community to see. So if you’ve been out and about with your camera, or just your trusty phone camera, and have captured some of the beautiful scenery around us, we’d love to hear from you.

Please send the photo, its caption, your name and where you’re from to [email protected] We can also include photography websites or Instagram pages, if you have one.

Deadline for entries is Friday, 7th February.

Email [email protected] with some details, and we’ll be in touch!

Please bear in mind that the deadline for the spring edition is Friday, 7th February.

We've reached the end of the first full week of 2025! We hope everyone is feeling 'back to normal' after the Christmas chaos.

January is always considered the most melancholic month of the year, and even has a day dedicated to this, though this should be take this with a pinch of salt, since ‘Blue Monday’ was fabricated as a marketing ploy in the early 2000s. In fact, what if we flipped our views on January as a whole?

We are always told to make goals, change our lifestyles and to ‘be better’ as soon as Christmas is over. What if, instead, we focused on making small, sustainable changes, if we have the space in our lives to do that?

That could be choosing to spend more time in the town centre to support your local businesses, moving your body in a way that you find enjoyable and attainable, volunteering some spare hours at a local charity or community initiative, or simply finding more time for your loved ones.

January doesn’t necessarily mean we have to say goodbye to all of the joy and wish away the months. Light candles in the evenings, drape fairylights around the house, take the time to make wholesome meals, cosy up with blankets, watch your favourite film, or read a new book. What if we spent this winter period slowing down and finding joy in the little things?

So tell us, how do you find warmth and solace in January? Let us know in the comments, and do tag any local businesses or community groups that bring you a little joy!

According to Smartphone Free Childhood Cornwall, Falmouth and Penryn are leading the way when it comes to delaying smartphones in childhood...

A parent pact launched in Cornwall in September 2024, which allows parents to pledge to delay smartphone ownership for children, has seen a strong take up from families in Falmouth and Penryn.

Well done to everyone at Aspects Holidays who worked so hard to support children here in Cornwall this Christmas with their toy appeal.

For most, Christmas is a time of happiness and joy, but for others this may not be the case. Cornwall is known for its beautiful landscapes and stunning coastline, but it is also an area of deprivation, where many families struggle to make ends meet. Nobody wants to think of a child going without fo...

We're all familiar with A Christmas Carol. Featuring the miserable, uncharitable Ebenezer Scrooge, who is given the chance to change his ways one Christmas Eve, author Charles Dickens nudges the reader to recognise the desperate need for more compassion and generosity in society.

A couple of years ago, historian Barry West uncovered a link between the Victorian writer and our beloved Cornwall, with the theory that the name of one character in particular could have been inspired by a gentleman who is buried in St Endellion.

So, as you snuggle in this Christmas Eve, have a read through this article before picking up your own copy of A Christmas Carol...

A couple of years ago, we ran a story about Charles Dickens and his trip to Cornwall in 1842. Did he take inspiration from the places and people he met before writing A Christmas Carol? One hundred and eighty-two years on from Dickens's trip to Cornwall, and just in time for Christmas, we take a loo...

Robins are often associated with Christmas and the winter season. Our nature writer Jennifer Carter takes a look at these fascinating little birds...

The sight of a robin on a winter walk would not usually come as a surprise. However, on a walk back in November, seeing a group of four or five robins in a blackthorn hedgerow near Pendennis Point was quite unexpected.
