Studio upgrade Pt II is all about bringing another level to my mixing game. Mixing records is what I have been best known for over the years as it was my main role before opening Fuzzface Studio and getting more into the world of production.
I love being involved in the whole process from song development then recording and producing a record before hitting the mixing stage but low end bass control in a mix is where that real special sauce happens on the journey of making music.
So to up my game Ive added a Focal subwoofer to the set up here at the studio and after setting it all up and tweaking to find the sweet spot I’m absolutely blown away on the extra clarity and definition it’s going to help me bring to the bass frequencies on my mixes.
Currently mixing new tracks for .anchors and so it’s the perfect time to be taking things to the next level 🚀🚀🚀🚀

For years I’ve wanted to own a Neumann microphone and finally today comes the realisation of this record producers dream with this gorgeous u87 🤩
I’ve been doing all I can this year to invest in gear here at Fuzzface Studio so that together we can make the best records we possibly can and achieve all the sonic magic that’s in our heads.
I’m so fortunate to be working with so many amazing bands and artists who help make every day an adventure and I’m grateful to every single one of you who trust me with your music 🙏
The studio is now fully booked into 2025 and that’s just mind blowing to me so I’ll keep pushing on to make this place the creative escape of our dreams and can’t wait to see what records the future holds!!
And yes that does say Fuzz Stud in the background 😂

For about the last 10 years I’ve been searching for the perfect pedal platform for recording guitars.
A combination of amps, microphones, mic placement and amp settings that translate to all guitars and all pedal combinations I throw at them.
Something that sounds great in the room and inspires the player yet fits effortlessly into any mix regardless of style, genre or technique.
I’ve tried infinite combinations of amplifiers and microphones but never re the last few sessions here at Fuzzface I genuinely believe I’ve found the perfect pedal platform that can bring luscious clean tones through to face melting chaos and everything in between.
The magic combination is sending your guitar through an ABY pedal to a Fender Deluxe Reverb 68 Reissue close miked between the centre and edge of the cone with a Beyerdynamic M201 dynamic mic (closest to the cone - this is super important) and a Bash Audio RM BIV1 ribbon mic - and then the split signal going to a Vox AC15 close miked between the centre and edge of the cone with a Beyerdynamic M88 dynamic mic (closest to the cone) and a Bash Audio RM BIV1 ribbon mic.
The M201 is perfect for focusing on the high end of the Fender and preventing too much low end fender mud and the M88 close to the cone of the Vox for a healthy dose of proximity effect kills those excessive vox highs and accentuates just the right amount of low end. The Bash Audio ribbons never fail to amaze me and just seem to work every time….complimenting the Beyerdynamic perfectly.
Tone Heaven 🎸🚀😎

Dallas Love Field taking things to a whole new level at last nights headline gig at The Hug & Pint
A triumphant set which firmly announced them as Scotlands most exciting shoegaze band. I’ve been telling everyone who will listen that these guys are going to be huge and the energy of last nights performance oozed that belief and togetherness that showed they are ready. An absolute sonic masterpiece and so proud of them on the release of their debut single Drowned Out 🖤

I really love these guys and how their songs are twisted storytelling journeys that ease you into a dream then proceed to melt your brain with fuzzed out shards of blinding light.
Finishing touches happening as we speak to their debut EP 🚀🚀

Welcome to The Green Room - the latest addition to Fuzzface Studio. I’ve been upgrading a lot of the gear in the studio over the past few months taking the choice of instruments and microphones to the next stage - more on that later. However, having a dedicated spot for bands to hang out, chill, eat, smoke and enjoy the studios beautiful lush surroundings has been a goal since day 1….and now it’s here!!
Im currently taking bookings for Autumn and have a few spaces left in August and September so get in touch if you want to come and make a record together and check out The Green Room for yourself…..officially approved for its chilledoutness by Helicon - Glasgow and studio boss Bodhi

Fuzzface Studio popping it’s Glyn Johns mic technique cherry last week with David Moore & The Fachans
Three mics and a drummer - nothing else.
I’ve always found this to be a technique that only works in very specific situations and in my experience only really pays off on a huge room with a full on performance where you just want to capture a massive gelled together drum take in a cavernous natural reverb washed room. However I’ve always wanted to try it in a tight room situation where the drum part needed to be stripped back with no specific focus other than its groove….and that’s exactly what we needed for the song we were working on together. Stoked to report that it worked an absolute treat and perfectly captured the vibe we were chasing. 🚀🚀🚀

Absolutely killer day tracking two songs for the new David Moore EP
Dirty guitars, bass, drums and vocals all nailed and sounding properly epic.
Decided to strip back the wall of amps to one mic per amp for this session with the Stam Audio SA-47f and a couple of super vintage Sennheiser MD403 and MD421
Really loving these three new additions to the Fuzzface mic locker - astounding tones 🚀🚀

One of the things I love more than anything is recording and mixing drums. It’s a constant learning experience every single session - more so than any other instrument....always experimenting, tweaking and fine tuning configurations to find just the right balance for that song, player, kit, room and the vibe that you want to create.
The most important element is the player and I’ve been so lucky to work with so many amazing drummers over the years.
One who always stands out for me of being so in tune with his drumming - always wild and exciting but never losing it, always tasteful but never predictable, always in perfect dynamic control where nothing is ever over hit or under played, and always so easy and fun to spend time working with is Seb Jonsen of Helicon - Glasgow
This week was the perfect opportunity to finally nail the drum sound I’ve been searching for since building my own studio - it’s exactly what I’ve had in my head and been experimenting to find. For the drum geeks out there here was the set up we went with that worked so well ....... Kick In (Beyer M88), Kick Out (Stam SA-47f), Snare Top (Beyer M201), Snare Side (Beyer M81), Snare Under (Sennheiser MD403), Floor Nuke Mic (Shure Green Bullet), Rack Tom Top (Sennheiser MD421), Rack Tom Under (Beyer D35), Floor Tom Top (Peavey PVM502tn), Floor Tom Under (Beyer D35), Ride (Groove Tubes GT33), Blumlein Overheads (Cascade Fatheads), Stereo Room (Bash Audio RM-BIV), Room Wall Crush (Shure SM57)

Work started yesterday on a new single with Helicon - Glasgow at Fuzzface. Such a great day with the guys - drums, rhythm guitars, bass and keys all done and the super talented Declan Welsh laid down some sick backing vocal parts. So much fun as always working with the band and the sun was splitting the sky down here in tropical Fairlie! 🌴 Couldn’t have wished for a better first day 🚀🚀🚀
Really cool also having and Mario here too for something very special - all will be revealed in good time 😎

Experimented with a couple of drum microphone tricks at this weeks The Joshua Hotel sessions that I’ve been wanting to try for a while.
First up was an alternative to the crotch mic idea (which I like to use but always seems a bit hit or miss). This one instead uses a bullet harmonica mic placed on the floor under the snare pointing at the kick drum batter. It sounds the absolute bomb and everything I’ve always wanted the crotch mic to do. It’s a keeper!!
The other was a new room mic flavour I’ve been told about a few times but never got round to trying which is placing an SM57 pointed right at the rear side wall only a hair away from the wall (move back a little for less low end). Crap mic, strange location, oddly huge and awesome sounding room sound!! Another keeper 🚀🚀🚀

Brilliant having The Joshua Hotel down at Fuzzface this week to record the very last tracks for their new album. It’s been a year in the making and I’m so proud of the record we’ve created!
Final bass track being laid down here with Josh playing my dad’s ‘69 Fender Jazz that now lives here at the studio. I love this guitar so much - it’s been a part of my life since I was born and to see it used pretty much on every record I make here at the studio is so cool. Warmest, smoothest , meatiest bass tone I’ve ever known 😍

That’s me pretty speechless this morning!
The other day I posted about my Muso AI profile which had tracked all my song credits and showed I had 2.8 million plays. Well it turns out it was still doing its thing and tracking everything and has now worked it out to be almost 4.2 million 🚀🚀🚀

I decided to create a Muso AI profile and it’s actually pretty cool. It finds and gathers all your recording credits, lists them, shows all time streaming stats and creates an evil Spotify discography playlist featuring your life’s work!
Quite humbling to look over all the records that you’ve worked on over the years and see that in the streaming world they have had nearly 3 million plays 🤩
It’s not of course a true representation because the bands I work with are primarily focused on making physical records and unfortunately it does not yet track and report on vinyl sales - nonetheless it’s an achievement I’m really proud of and makes me so grateful to all the amazing bands and artists who continue to trust me with their art.

Just had a fun guitar amp microphone shootout here at Fuzzface this morning.

I wanted to narrow down my go to dynamic mic for clean and dirty scenarios that would pair just right with the warmth of a ribbon.

Facing off against each other was the…
beyerdynamic M88
Beyerdynamic M201
Sennheiser MD403

And to bring a condenser to the party I wanted to bring in the fabled U47FET vibe with our new…
Stam Audio SA-47F

To mix things up a little I thought it would be great to honour the great Steve Albini and not only try the mics in their standard against the grille application but also around 30cm away from the amp as Steve in many interviews and videos chanpioned.

Everything was level matched with a 60 second loop with my Fender Jazzmaster straight into a VOX Amps AC15.
- 1 take each clean against the grille
- 1 take each overdriven against the grille
- 1 take each clean 30cm from the amp
- 1 take each overdriven 30cm from the amp

All mics sounded great but two variations shone through as clear winners to me. The winners blended perfectly with a RM-BIV1 ribbon micl, both took eq better than all the competition in each scenario and both sat perfectly in the mix with some rough drums, bass and keys.

For clean guitar tones the clear winner was the Beyerdynamic M201 right up against the grille.

For dirty overdriven guitar tones the clear winner was the Stam SA-47f sitting around 30cm away from the amplifier.

Great experiment…and yes, Steve knew 😉

I’ve heard so many amazing things about Stam products and have wanted to invest in them for some time so buzzing to have received this gorgeous SA-47F today. Phenomenal on kick drums, bass amps, guitar amps, acoustic guitars and vocals - I can’t wait to start seeing it become an integral part of the upcoming records I’ll be working on here at the studio 😍
