Today marks the beginning of the 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. The 16 days stands as a global call to action inviting campaigners to raise their voices, ignite conversations and drive transformative change.

Running from 25 November, which is also White Ribbon Day, to 10 December, each year the WI marks it and encourages members to get involved as part of our No More Violence against Women campaign.

You can find ways to get involved here: https://mywi.thewi.org.uk/public-affairs-and-campaigns/current-campaigns/no-more-violence-against-women

If you have events and activities planned please share them with us at [email protected]

POSTPONED - we are sorry to announce that due to weather, illness and accidents (sounds like a song) we are postponing the Podcast recording tonight. We WILL reschedule, and keep you posted.

Plan B is in action - see you all later for some fun & games, and who doesn’t enjoy a chance to chat over a hot cuppa.

Reminder: Thursday’s meeting will be a live podcast recording, “Invisible Women” -
* Are Women Invisible?
* Why, When, What, Where?
* Do we (as women) care?

Our Podcast host Sarah Setter, (Lost Lady Society Producer, Writer, & Director) will be joined on the panel by two Lost Ladies, WI members Yvonne, Paula and Carol, and cheering them on our WI audience.

Bring your stories, share your experiences, pose questions.

At the Parish Council meeting in October, it was unanimously agreed that due to the continuing dog fouling of the recreation field, that ALL dogs must be kept on a lead ALL the time.

By doing this, it is hoped that everyone will see if and when their dog makes a mess, and thereby PICK IT UP and take it home or put it in our dog poo bins.

Should this not work, then a public order will be applied for to ban dogs completely - and the Council don’t want to do that; yet!

If you see a dog not a lead, remind the owners of the new arrangements and get them to read the signs around the recreation field that will go up over the weekend.

Remembrance Day Service at Long Sutton Holy Trinity Church, 10:50am at the war memorial followed by Church Service. Joyce will be presenting the WI Poppy Wreath 🙏

A big thank you to members for tending to the poppy skirt which needed some tlc, and special thanks to Doreen for drying, and storing the skirt over the past year.

The Poppy Square, a felt appliqué is part of our ‘Stitch in Time’ virtual gallery: 100 Years in 100 Squares.

A flash back too, to last year, when Rosie kept watch as we put the poppy skirt out.

Join us at the War Memorial this Sunday morning at 10.50 to remember those who have given their lives for each & every one of us.

If you haven’t bought your poppy yet, then pop up to see Jig & Ash at The Village Shop as they are selling them on behalf of the Royal British Legion

Welcome to our ‘Stitch in Time’ virtual gallery: 100 Years in 100 Squares.

Charabanc excursions were a regular feature of the WI programme in the early years. In 1927 members enjoyed various trips to take part in a Drama Festival, compete in a Musical Festival, and visit the County Handicraft Exhibition at Bristol.

At their 1927 Annual Meeting, Miss Lucy M Reynolds (President) reported: “Intercourses with the larger life of the WI movement is maintained by attending the London WI County Federation, and Group meetings, and to an increasing extent by the inter-visitation, by private members, of neighbouring institutes whether as judges, demonstrators, or lecturers. This service is most stimulating, and like mercy, ‘it blesseth him that gives and him that takes,’ and we might well resolve to have more of it next year”.

Welcome to our ‘Stitch in Time’ virtual gallery: 100 Years in 100 Squares.

🧵Somerset County Federation Women’s Institute (SCFWI) has approx 3,000 WI members and 155 institutes, and is one of the largest Federations in the UK.

🧵In 1924, WI member Mrs Jane Leceister designed and hand painted a yellow tea set with matching embroidered tea cosy were entered into the WI County Handicraft Exhibition, and awarded a 1st class certificate. In 1974 a hand embroidered table cloth was added to the collection.

In 1925 the founding Long Sutton members also purchased a Royal Doulton Tea Set, and hand-painted each piece to use at WI meetings, these are displayed at the Village Hall.

An interesting & entertaining day out at the Somerset County Federation Annual Meeting.

We enjoyed talks from Anne -Wells WI, Rosie Hather -ARC Homeless Housing charity, Cllr. Bryan Knickerbocker (Chair Street Parish Council), Nettie from Craft House Chocolate, and Jessica Tyson marine pilot & Acting Deputy Harbour Master Somerset - very inspiring.

Thanks to Lorraine for carrying the Long Sutton banner; it was lovely to see all the hand stitched WI banners. We were also presented with a certificate to mark our 100th Anniversary.

Well done and thank you to The WI - Somerset team for organising a great day, and congratulations to Teresa Hemms, a well earned rest 👏 👏 👏
