Today, heavy outbreaks of rain to start. Cloud will turn patchier in the afternoon, with lighter showers lingering. Temperatures will peak at 8 Celsius, 46 Fahrenheit. North-westerly winds at force 5 to 6. Rough seas in the north and west, moderate in the south and east.

Tonight will see patchy cloud and clear spells, with further showers persisting through the night. Temperatures will dip to 3 Celsius, 37 Fahrenheit. North-westerly winds at force 5 to 6, reaching near-gale force 7 in the early hours in the north-east. Rough seas in the north and west, moderate in the south and east.

Tomorrow, patchy cloud with light showers through most of the day, but cloud will begin to clear to the east during the afternoon, and it will turn dry. Temperatures will peak at 5 Celsius, 41 Fahrenheit. North-westerly winds at force 5 to 6, easing to force 4 in the afternoon. Very rough seas for most in the morning, easing to rough in the afternoon. Moderate seas in the south.

The Sports Awards big night is rescheduled for this Friday the 31st and anyone looking to go along and support the sporting community in Orkney can get tickets from The Orcadian Office.

Orkney Island Games Committee is putting on a series of Roadshows so folk can ask questions and find out about the road closures. The first session is today in Stromness Community Centre between half past five and half past seven. There are also events in Kirkwall the morn, Harray on Thursday, and next week in Rendall, Dounby and Finstown.

There’s an Open Meeting in Stromness tonight regarding Stromness Shopping Week and the desperate need for more committee members. It’s at seven o’ clock in the Eventide Club.

Stromness Drama Club’s AGM is tonight in the Old Herring Factory starting at eight o’ clock.

And Stromness Church Guild has its AGM tonight, and the programme is Crafts.

Flotta Community Council will meet today at quarter past four in Flotta Community Centre.

This Thursday there’s a chance to find out more about the phone landlines migrating to a digital service, with a Roadshow being run by BT and Ability Net. There’ll be details about Digital Voice, what to expect, and to ask any questions. The event is being held at the Picky Centre this Thursday between ten o’ clock and four.

Also on Thursday, SSEN Transmission will be holding a public information meeting in Firth Community Centre from quarter to seven till eight o’ clock. Tuesday morning's weather from BBC Radio Orkney: An area of low pressure to the east of Orkney will persist through today and tomorrow before clearing to the north tomorrow evening. This will bring north-easterly to north-westerly winds and frequent showers and rain throughout the short-term period.

In more detail: Today, it will be mostly cloudy though still with the odd glimmers of brightness. Spells of rain through the day. Temperatures will peak at 7 Celsius, that's 45 Fahrenheit. North-easterly winds at force 6 to near-gale 7 in the morning, easing to force 4 to 5 in the afternoon. Rough seas for most, moderate in the south.

Tonight will see patchy cloud and clear spells, with further showers through the night. Temperatures will dip to 5 Celsius, that's 41 Fahrenheit. Northerly winds at force 4 to 5. Moderate seas for all.

Tomorrow, it will be cloudy with spells of rain in the morning. Cloud will clear through the afternoon, allowing for bright spells later on. Temperatures will peak at 6 Celsius, that's 43 Fahrenheit. North-westerly winds at force 5 to 6. Rough seas in the north and west, moderate in the south and east.

Stewart Bain speaks to best-selling crime writer and author of the Shetland series, Ann Cleeves, about why she is setting her latest Jimmy Perez novel in Orkney.

We have this month's Orkney book group with Alison Miller and Alistair heather discussing Chrissie Costie's dialect book 'Benjie's Bodle'.

Stewart hears about the cultural side of this summer's Orkney Island Games from studio guests Brian Cromarty, Gabrielle Barnby, Beccy May and Emma Gee. And he visits local craftsman Kevin Gauld at his studio where he's creating the sculpture that will be the centrepiece of the opening ceremony in July.

And as if that wasn't enough, we visit Birsay artist Samantha Clark to hear about her contribution to the 'In Orcadia' exhibition which has just opened at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh through to March 2nd.

Orkney Agricultural Discussion Society have an event at the Mart tonight at eight o’ clock with Cameron Linklater, Derek Neil and Hamish Brown from Linklater Engineering and Massey Ferguson.

Kirkwall & St Ola Community Council meets tonight at seven o’ clock in the St Magnus Centre, and Westray Community Council should meet in Westray School at half past seven.

Starting tonight, Orkney Tai Chi Chuan is offering a Beginners Class in Wudang Tai Chi at half past seven in the Kirkwall BB Hall. More details are on the Orkney Tai Chi Chuan page, or from Jim on 850 963.

Tonight will see generally cloudy skies and further showers, these lighter than during the daytime. Temperatures will dip to 5 Celsius, 41 Fahrenheit. North-easterly winds at force 5 to 6, touching near-gale 7 in the north. Moderate seas in the south, rough elsewhere.

Tomorrow, it will stay mostly cloudy though still with one or two glimmers of brightness. Scattered showers will also continue. Temperatures will peak at 7 Celsius, 45 Fahrenheit. Northerly winds at force 4 to 6. Rough seas, turning moderate later.

Looking ahead, brisk northerly winds, cloud and light showers will persist on Wednesday. The cloud and showers will clear overnight into Thursday which will be a calmer and brighter day.

There is a public meeting about the Finstown substation and the development of the electricity network in Orkney being held by SSEN on Thursday evening between 6.45PM and 8PM at the Finstown community hall.

On Thursday 30th of January SSEN is holding a public meeting at Firth Community Centre (18:45). Helpfully this meeting will involve both members of staff from both the Transmission and Distribution part of SSEN who will be able to explain more about the company's plans for Orkney now that the construction phase of the Caithness to Orkney Link project is underway.

The meeting will offer an opportunity for community members to listen to a short presentation followed by time for any questions around infrastructure works taking place in Orkney. This is a change of format of event (at the request of members of our Community Liaison Group SSEN have set up) rather than a drop in.

New affordable 1 and 4 bed homes ready to buy are available to view at Liberator Close in Kirkwall today, Sat 25th January, and next Friday 31st, between 12 noon and 2pm.

Prices start at £87k for the 1 bed and £141k for the 4 bed, depending on circumstances.

The open viewings are being held by Orkney Housing Association Ltd (OHAL), who are selling the properties through the Scottish Government’s New Supply Shared Equity property scheme.

An Amber weather warning is in place across Orkney from 1 o'clock this afternoon, lasting until 6am tomorrow. All Stagecoach bus services are cancelled for the rest of today, with Stagecoach next reviewing the situation at six tomorrow morning.

Orkney Ferries is now saying its services are facing disruption for the rest of today and also into tomorrow due to tidal conditions so do check if you are planning a trip. Northlink's afternoon sailing is pulled forward this afternoon but tomorrow's early sailing is now cancelled. The Hamnavoe's Saturday afternoon sailing is currently expected to go ahead at the usual time.

All external flights from Kirkwall Airport are cancelled today. There were concerns the Churchill Barriers could have faced closure this morning but they remained open and are likely to stay open now.

And many community events are being cancelled - this evening the Orkney Sports Awards are cancelled, as well as the karate classes at KGS and the Fermers Gathering at Swannay Brewery. And the volunteer training for the Island Games which was due to start on Saturday has also now been cancelled.

Whatever you are planning, if you aren't sure, check ahead before you head out.

The Traditional Dancing in the Cromarty Hall in the Hope tonight has been cancelled.

The Salvation Army Friendship Club and Lunch Clubs are cancelled for today. Both will be held next weekend instead, at Kirkwall Baptist Church.

On Saturday, NFU Scotland Orkney is joining in the Stop The Family Farm Tax nationwide day of action. The planned Tractor Rally is gathering from 11am at the Mart to leave at half past eleven to head round Kirkwall, going along the Harbour Front, round Craigiefield, past the College, KGS and the Cathedral, before returning to the Mart. All NFUS members taking part should give names to John Laughton or Nicola Tait in advance.

There are Bookbugs in the Stromness Warehouse Building at eleven o’ clock this morning, with a session for Expectant Parents and Newborns on Saturday at half past two. And there’s a Saturday Bookbug in the Kirkwall Library at half past ten.

Graemsay, Hoy and Walls Community Council have a meeting at half past seven tonight in the North Walls School.

Now this is Burns weekend with lots of events happening in the county – although we believe from FB that the Flotta event has been cancelled, for details ring Janet on 701 784.

Rousay Burns Supper is on Saturday night in the School – doors open at quarter to seven.

Also on Saturday night Stromness Pipe Band have a Burns doo in the Stenness Hall at seven with entry to the Ronald Anderson Band Dance part from nine o’ clock.

The Burray Burns Crew have a Supper and Dance in the Holm Hall on Saturday – the meal at six followed by the Dance at half past eight.

Orkney Sailing Club’s Burns Supper is in The Girnel at seven o’ clock on Saturday.

A Burns Concert with Colin & Pauline Black, Stoatfinger, and Stravaig will be held in Kirkwall Town Hall at eight o’ clock – book on Eventbrite at Orkney Music and Culture.

Onto Sunday and there’s hundreds of Spring Bulbs needing Planting at St Mary’s Kirkyard at Burwick in South Ronaldsay. Lots of volunteers are needed between two and four o’ clock. Wear warm klaize, and you’ll be rewarded with plenty of homebakes and hot drinks.

Orkney Ramblers will meet at Burray Play park at ten on Sunday for a circular walk of about 7 miles on road, tracks and beach. Contact Graham on 07791 411 861 for more details, and check email or Facebook on the day in case of last minute changes.

The Modern Jive classes in Kirkwall are taking new members on this Sunday only - after that it will be October for new folk. The absolute beginner class is at half past eleven in the Guide Hall, with Beginners at one and Improvers at two. To find out more contact Steve on 07840 090 038.

To the Kirk notices, and in Kirkwall there’s a service at St Olaf’s Church at ten o’ clock, while quarter past eleven is the time for worship at the East Kirk, the Peedie Kirk and the Cathedral.

Kirkwall Baptist Church also meets at quarter past eleven, and have a Café Church at seven o’ clock.

The Salvation Army morning service is at half past ten at KGS, with afternoon worship at half past four at the Life Centre.

Kirkwall Catholic Church has Sunday Mass at half past five, and the Mass on Monday will be at the earlier time of eleven o’ clock.

There are services in Westray this Sunday at half past eleven in both the Church of Scotland and Baptist Kirks, while the service in Papay is at two o’ clock in St Ann’s.

In Hoy the service at Kirkside, Longhope is at eleven o’ clock. And also at eleven is worship in the East Mainland Church, and at St Margaret’s in the ‘Hope.

In the West the service in the Milestone Kirk, Dounby is at eleven o’ clock, with soup and a snack afterwards.

Evie, Rendall and Firth have a Joint Service in Rendall at eleven o’ clock, and the service in Orphir and Stenness Kirk is also at eleven.

And in Stromness the service at St Mary’s is at half past ten, and the Baptist Church also meets at half ten in Stromness Town Hall. The service at Stromness Church is at quarter past eleven. And Grace Church Orkney meets at five o’ clock on Sunday in the John Street Hall.

SSEN Transmission will hold a public information meeting on Thursday the 30th from quarter to seven till eight o’ clock in Firth Community Centre. Anybody wanting to know more about the Orkney Caithness Link project is invited to this Community Q&A meeting with a short presentation and project update.

Kirkwall BID will be hosting an Information Event with Kirsty Talbot on the Island Games for BID businesses on the 19th of February from half past twelve till two in the Albert Hotel. centre. After a light lunch and the presentation, there’ll be a chance to ask questions and discuss how you can participate. You need to RSVP to Kirkwall BID by Friday 7th February.

Clan’s Fire Walk is happening on the evening of March 29th at the Rugby Club. Participants will walk barefoot over two metres of burning embers, to raise money or Clan. Registration is £30 and can be found online at clan cancer support dot org and look for Orkney Firewalk 2025.

An Exhibition of Ba Paintings by Stuart Geddit is open in the Highland Park Shop Gallery till the end of the month.
