Length
The NC500 is a 516-mile route that loops around the northern coast of Scotland.
Starting and ending point
The route begins and ends in Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands.
Highlights
The NC500 includes John o' Groats, the most northerly tip of the UK mainland, as well as Loch Ness, castles, villages, beaches, and mountains.
Best time to visit
Summer is the peak tourist season, with all attractions open and good weather. May and September can be milder and less busy, while winter can be clear if it's not too wet.
Things to do
Visit castles, hike the highlands, watch wildlife, try local food, or visit distilleries.
Difficulty
The Bealach Na Ba Pass is the steepest and most difficult part of the route.
When it opened
The NC500 was launched in 2015 by the Tourism Project Board.
