A new liver cancer treatment is being pioneered in the UK that has found to be effective in nearly 90% of patients.

The treatment isolates the organ and protects healthy parts of the body by using two small balloons that divert blood around the liver whilst drugs are being administered.

The technique called chemosaturation allows doctors to deliver much larger doses of drugs than previous treatments.

The procedure being pioneered in the UK involves using two small balloons to divert blood past the liver for an hour while delivering drugs directly into the organ - with the average length of survival among those studied found to be 15 months.

Bacteria hold promise for cancer treatment in a number of potential ways, from cancer-cell killing properties to the ability to deliver therapies to tumours. However, the strength of the body's immune system is one of the biggest barriers to these opportunities.

However, bioengineers at Columbia University have developed a “cloaking” system that could temporarily hide bacterial vehicles from the immune system.
