Another thrifted find for the garden!!

I wanted a large mirror to backdrop my dahlia bed by the shed so I took a trip to my local Tip Shop (recycling centre)
I found this beautiful, worn and rugged mirror for just £10! It's huge!
I'll be spraying the frame with some sealant spray to protect against the weather but I'll be leaving it as it is because I love it....although I have considered some gold paint outlines on the pattern!

Can you imagine this with Cafe Au Lait Dahlias reflecting in it...🥰

What's your favourite part of your garden?
For me its our patio!

Last spring this area was a bare grassy patch full of pots, rubbish and random unfinished projects.
In total it costs us £200 to make over. That included the gravel, the furniture (all brought from the tip shop and facebook marketplace) and some plants.

The theme is boho/cottagecore 🍄

We added a DIY water feature made from an old galvanised tub and a solar powered fountain from Amazon.

It's the perfect reading spot as the sun sets on that side and it's a great place to watch the bird feeders 🐦‍⬛

Now the pond area is cleared and refreshed (thank you Mr Wild Gardener) we'll be on the hunt for some more pond plants to add to our current collection.

Loosestrife, Marsh marrygolds, water forget me nots and Cardemine pretenses are definitely on the list!

I saw a hack last year that said you can buy water cress from any salad section at the supermarket and it will take root ..and it did!! So definitely try that one if you have a pond!

BINDWEED 🫣

The absolute bane of my life...
I've been digging one small area over for hours trying to pull it all out but it just keeps coming!!
There aren't many natural alternatives to killing it, it's just a case of keeping on top of it. But I have found that boiling water and heavy mulching helps quite a bit.
If left to grow it can smother an entire garden in one season killing every plant in it's path so tackle it as soon as you see it.
Don't put it in your compost bin either, bag it up and pop it in your general waste bin 👍

Also, I seem to have caught a preditor bird catching it's pray in this photo. Any ideas what it is? 📸

The new wildlife habitat is done!
We picked up some roof tiles for 50p each of facebook marketplace and stacked them up to create a hideaway for insects and frogs 🐸
We cant wait till see what it attracts!
You will often find tiles for sale at your local recycling centre

LET'S TALK PLANTS!! 🌱

Here are a few of my favourite wildlife attracting plants that I'll be planting this year...🐝

This also took me ages on Canva 😅

It's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts...

Social media can be great for many reasons, but as a gardener, it can put a huge amount of pressure on us to be the same as everyone else. When in reality, the whole point in gardening....is to simply garden.

It doesn't matter if you sow your tomato seeds on the first day of January or if you wait until March. It doesn't matter if you chit your potatoes in February or if you put them straight in the ground, from the bag in April.
It dostnt matter if you mulch or you don't mulch. It doesn't matter if you no-dig or double dig.

It's YOUR garden.

What matters is that you you find peace with the soil. You calm your soul. You relax. You breath in the fresh air. Your smell the flowers. You enjoy the fresh fruit straight from the bush. You enjoy the process.
You take part...💛

Things I will and won't be planting in 2024!

Will
More perennials (more expensive upfront but save money in the long term)
Lavender (for medicinal and sensory)
Fruit bushes
Strawberries (because they are just so good)
Pond plants

Won't
Bedding plants (pretty but expensive and don't last long)
Potatoes (take up to much space and cheap to buy)
Courgettes (we never get round to eating them)
Peas (you need loads for a decent harvest)

Over the years I've learnt what we do and don't eat and what is cheap to buy in shops anyway. Things like Potatoes take up a lot of my space so I just stopped growing them.
I'm aiming to have the majority of the flowers either with a medicinal purpose, good for wildlife or a sensory plant. I used to spend so much money on bedding plants bit after a few months they were done so I started investing my money on self seeding wild flowers instead. 💐

Here's a picture of my Strawberries from a few years ago 🍓

The next challenge on the list is to re-do the wildlife pond area 🐸
It's currently full of brambles, which is going to be a test to remove. The logs need replacing, and the liner has a small hole.
Last summer, I managed to cut back the area so I could hang out on the swing seat, but it's now time to refresh!

We have so many frogs, toads and newts here so we are going to be super careful during this process and get it done as quickly as possible so as not to disturb them too much.
I then plan to grow wild flowers around the edges to create a "secret garden" type of look!
Of course, I'll also be hanging lots of windchimes and bird feeders!
