So here’s a rare coincidence. I received these units I won on the 31st of July which is also Rupert Neve’s birthday who was the founder of the brand…31st of July is also my birthday 🤭 Crazy right? 🤯 What are the chances?

A few weeks ago, KMR Audio did a giveaway at Tileyard London during Gearfest UK. We found out yesterday that the randomly-chosen winner was Andris Kiss - Record Producer, and we reached out to say congratulations…

NOW GET THIS: Not only did we see his thank-you message on Rupert’s birthday, he also SHARES THE SAME BIRTHDAY AS RUPERT. 🤯 What a world, right?

“Just want to say a massive thank you for anyone who was involved with the giveaway. I have never won anything in my life. Here’s a bonus no one was aware of. I just received these units. Today is the 31st of July / Rupert’s birthday, which is also my birthday as I was born on the same day. 🤭🥳 “

Tips for a good live sound with 2 mics for drums.

Today I’d like to dig a bit deeper into a favourite topic of mine as I love recording drums. In the recent years I received drum recordings with 1 or 2 mics to mix. I always love a good challange but I thought what if I share a few tips to help you take your recordings and live sound to the next level. I’ll talk about physics and how to EQ just with your mic placement on its own.

So we’re looking at the case when you only have 2 mics, purely placement, so no eq, compression…etc. There are many techniques with 2 mics, but let’s look at the most common where you use one for the kick and the second one to capture the rest of the kit.

Mic 1 - Kick:

Planning is key. As a band there are certain things you might want to discuss with your drummer as there are many things you can play with to achieve different sounds apart from the size of the kick.

Be**er:

Drummers will know best but different be**ers will give you different sounds. What sound fits best your songs or genre? Punchy, clicky, warm, soft…?

Tuning:

I always prefer to tune the kick to the key of the song or the lowest note of the guitars. A higher key gives you more tone, a tight sound and smack, while a lower tuned floppy kick gives you more attack and less tone.

Attack / transients / tone / sustain /decay:

Once you have chosen the right be**er and tuned your kick, you can shape your kick by how much dampening you put in it. There were cases where we even used moongel. Again this depends on the genre and the style of your band. You want to decide the length of the tone / sustain and how long it takes to fade out once you hit the kick and felt the attack. Obviously a kick drum with a long sustain wouldn’t work in fast music, but a kick with lots of attack and short sustain would also sound alien in smooth jazz.

Mic choice and placement:

I could go very deep with this but I’ll keep it simple. Dynamic mics are most common for most bands. Smaller sized diaphragm = less low end, more top. Large diaphragm is the opposite. But keep in mind that each mic will react differently, so it is not a general rule 100%. Inside the kick = less ambient noise, outside = more. If you’re putting the mic inside the kick, you can shape your sound by how deep you place the mic and what it’s aiming at. Want to be creative? Angle at the dampening or be**er, but you can also mic up the kick from the opposite side 😉

Mic 2:

As we only have a 2nd mic, this mic will have lots of roles. A common mistake is to think that the overhead = cymbal mics. Wrong. This mic is supposed to capture the whole kit including cymbals.

Few things you need to watch out for. The closer you go to the cymbals, the more chance you have that it will blow air in your mic. The closer you go = less kit sound.

As a drummer you can create different sounds depending on how loud you hit the cymbals. Loud cymbals will create a cloud or wall between your kit sound and the mic when it’s placed above. With quieter cymbals the kit will cut through more.

As we only have a 2nd mic, I’d do the following:

Find an ideal distance where all cymbals sound equal. Listen to how loud the hihat sounds on one side and match it with a ride, crash maybe china on the opposite side. Once they sound equal, you need to find your ideal distance for snare and the rest of the kit. You can go closer to get more of the snare and move away to get less snare and more of the cymbals. It’s almost like zooming in and out. You can also shape your sound with vertical placement and height. For example, you can get less cymbals and a better full kit sound if you place the mic lower behind the drum kit pointing at the snare, compared to placing the mic above the drummer where the cymbals are between the kit and the mic.

My ideal placement in this situation? Above the drummer’s shoulder opposite side of the hihat. This gives you equal sounding cymbals, no cloud of cymbal sound and a matching full kit sound.

I think I’ll stop here. As always, I could go on and keep talking about this for days. 🤭 There’s lots of tricks and sounds with 3 or more mics and we haven’t even done anything on the mixer yet. So my advice would be to use your ears and listen to how things sound before making things complicated with the mixer as it will give you a much better sound.

Here it is! Miss you, the final single I will release under Harry Stephenson. 🎶 This particular song has had so many versions, for those that don't know, this song is about a close friend called Tom Hadwin, who is sadly no longer with us. 😇 For me, writing songs helps me deal with things and this one never quite felt right until now, with the blessing of his family and the help of many friends and mine and toms primary school choir, I have been able to complete this song. 🎉 You can find it on all platforms now! Share far and wide. 🌐 This one's for Tom! 🎸

Thanks to Toms family , Tim Lowe
