2025 - PLAY YOUR PART IN PREVENTING MOORLAND WILDFIRES ACROSS WEST YORKSHIRE

As warmer, drier weather arrives and Easter approaches, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) is once again launching its campaign for 2025.

This vital initiative aims to safeguard the region’s moorlands and rural communities from the devastating impact of wildfires.

Each year, wildfires ravage thousands of acres of countryside, destroying habitats and causing significant economic, environmental, and social damage.

At the heart of the campaign is a clear message: everyone must play their part in preventing wildfires.

OVER 20,000 ANIMAL ABANDOMNENT CASES IN 2024 - LOCKDOWN’S LASTING IMPACT ON ANIMAL WELFARE

As the UK marks five years since the first COVID-19 lockdown, the RSPCA has warned that the repercussions for animal welfare are still being felt on an enormous scale.

THE WINDRUSH GENERATION, UNSEEN PIONEERS OF TRANSPORT AND INDUSTRY IN HUDDERSFIELD

One of the lesser-known aspects of the Windrush Generation’s impact in West Yorkshire is their role in public transport.

In the 1950s and 1960s, many Caribbean men took jobs as bus conductors and drivers in cities like Leeds and Huddersfield.

Persistent campaigning led to a change in racist hiring policies, and the region’s transport network became a key employer of Caribbean workers.

Similarly, in the textile industry, which was the backbone of West Yorkshire’s economy, many Caribbean women took on roles in woollen mills and clothing factories, working long hours under challenging conditions.

THREE DISTINGUISHED ARTISTS COMMEMORATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CAMBODIAN GENOCIDE AT HOLOCAUST CENTRE NORTH

Holocaust Centre North, based at the University of Huddersfield, Queensgate, is set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Cambodian Genocide with a powerful temporary exhibition, ‘Cambodia: 50 Years of Reckoning’.

Running from 31st March to 4th April, the exhibition arrives just ahead of Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Day on 17th April, which marks the Khmer Rouge’s takeover of Phnom Penh—the start of one of the darkest chapters in Cambodia’s history.

The exhibition brings together three distinguished artists - Dayanny So, Charles Fox, and Komarine Romdenh-Romluc - whose work reflects on personal and collective experiences of the genocide, the journey of reclaiming identity, and the process of coming to terms with the past.
