We want to know - what are some of the best products being made right now in Wycombe? 🎁

We’re putting together a little High Wycombe Gift Guide full of things made by local craftspeople and small businesses, or related to our town in some way. We’ve collected a few names so far but would love to hear your input.

So let us know ⬇️ who we need to be looking out for that makes things locally that you’d love to give as a gift. Whether it’s books, cakes, ornaments, paintings, personalised trinkets or beyond…

Did you know that High Wycombe is home to an Iron Age hill fort?

It can be found just off Rutland Avenue in Castlefield. The site can be dated all the way back to the late Neolithic era (before 2500BC) and stone tools were made here. It was a castle in the Middle Ages and is one of only 60 left in the UK with both a ditch and Bailey defensive system, according to the Chiltern Rangers. Roman coins, pottery and roof tiles have also been found here.

On a clear day, you can enjoy some really impressive views over Wycombe and West Wycombe up here.

Castle Hill House - now home to Wycombe Museum - has a long and fascinating history in the town.

An Anglo-Saxon burial ground to start (a female skeleton was discovered at the entrance near the trough) suggesting it began its life as a Saxon farm, the massive mound in the grounds believed to be a medieval defense system, the remains of a 17th century farmhouse (where the Victorian kitchen exhibition is housed) and the striking flint-covered villa you can see here from the Regency era of the Georgian period.

The site can be found in documents dating all the way back to 1170 and so is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It’s thought that people have lived here since the early Middle Ages. We think it’s entirely fitting that the Museum are the current custodians of such an important local building.

Did you know that the (in)famous Mitford sisters used to live in High Wycombe?

They spent their childhood summers in Old Mill Cottage on Bassetsbury Lane and apparently became much a part of the local community.

There were 6 sisters: Nancy, prolific author including of The Pursuit of Love; Pam, who had a colourful love life that included John Betjeman amongst her suitors; Diana, who eventually married fascist Oswald Mosley and went to prison with him; Unity, friend of Hi**er; Jessica, a communist; and Deborah, who married the later Duke of Devonshire and transformed Chatsworth House.

That’s a lot of family drama for one little cottage!
