In March, we completed a shoot in Engelberg, Switzerland, with Mammut. Our location crew was a blend of our in-house filmmakers and freelancers. Among them was Soren Rickards, a pro when it comes to mountain sports photography. Soren captured some incredible stills to support our project, and we think the pictures speak for themselves!

Our award-winning film, ADRA, has been on tour with KMF over the past month, lighting up screens across the UK! Huge thanks to everyone who joined us for the screening and shared your love for the film. We've received a lot of kind messages and whether it made you laugh, cry, or feel the call of spring, we are glad to have played a part in that.

Special acknowledgments and gratitude to our director, co-director, and the cast for their commitment to bringing ADRA to life on tour, along with providing valuable behind-the-scenes insights.

We've also heard your requests about where ADRA will be available to watch. Initially, the film will solely be accessible through local screenings. Stay tuned for more distribution plans coming later this year; you'll find updates across our social channels.

ADRA is a film about the heart of adventure climbing in North Wales; we worked with to produce accessible versions of the film, including Open Captions, BSL, and Audio Description. Accessibility to film is immensely important to us here at Coldhouse; making films accessible to as many people as possible, so that they can share in the joy of adventure films, is crucial. Three of five of our screenings on our tour included access to all accessibility assets; with the other two including Open Captions only.

We've spent a few years advocating for accessibility assets and sessions at film festivals, and we're really excited to have worked with KMF to incorporate these values into the ADRA tour.

Our next two screenings have the following accessibility:

London: Rio Cinema, 25th April, 8PM [Open Captions]

Sheffield: Showroom Cinema, 26th April, 7PM [Open Captions, BSL interpreter, and Audio Description]

If you didn't win a ticket in our competition yesterday, you can still join us - there are still tickets available for both London (tonight) and Sheffield (tomorrow night) screenings of Adra! Check out the link in our bio, and we'll see you there!

Earlier this year we headed out to Kinder Scout with Tom Spencer from Moors for the Future and Tim Allet from Manchester University to document the restoration work at the Nogson site.

Being on location in our local hills is always enjoyable, but being on location for a project to support an organisation working to protect, restore, and maintain our local landscapes is a special kind of reward. Even if it’s absolutely freezing and we have to conduct interviews in a four-season sleeping bag.

We’re proud to have committed to 1% for the planet, to use our business to support environmental organisations.

As part of our pledge, we partnered with Moors For The Future, a local organisation working in the heart of the Peak District. This year, we’ve donated our time & expertise to create a short film for MFTF to champion their work to governmental, scientific, and academic institutions.

To read more about our decision to partner with MFTF, and what other steps we’re taking as a business to reduce our impact on the environment, head over to our journal (link in bio) for our ‘Ethics and Environment’ article, written by Emma Crome.

Is it a coincidence that so many professional athletes, ex-special forces soldiers and high-flying business CEOs are asked to give talks on teamwork? No, no it’s not.

Any good leader knows that team choice and selection are such a massive part of any high-functioning process. And one of the main barriers to effective team selection? Ego.

Lots of leaders like to be the ‘best’ in the team. They like to be the most experienced, the most talented and the most important.

But good leaders know that the opposite is true. Picking a team of highly skilled operators who are better at things than you, who complement your weaknesses, and who are specialists in their field, massively alters the odds of success when there are so many variables at play.

When plans go sideways and things go wrong (which they often do in the world of remote location film) you want to be surrounded by people you can rely on.

Jake Holland is a perfect example of this. On our latest shoot for Mammut in Switzerland, Jake was the expert on the mountain team. He wasn’t the director, he wasn’t the guide, but he’s filmed more freeride skiing than the rest of us put together. In the space of a single 24-hour block, he meticulously checked the weather, the avalanche forecasts and the terrain to work out where would be best to film. He flew drones launched out of his hands with less than a minute's notice, and he chased a pro skier down a mountain with a camera in his hands.

Multi-skilled operators are one ingredient in the secret sauce of doing what we do, and knowing when to quiet down and listen to your team is a skill that more directors and producers could benefit from.

Chasing light is something that is sort of expected in the world of adventure films. Images of golden peaks in dying light have become synonymous with mountain filmmaking, but why is it that we fight so hard for the elusive golden hour?

Ask any Hollywood DoP how they want something ‘lit’ and one of the first things they’ll talk about or think about is the story. What do we want to say with this scene? What story are we trying to tell? What happens before this moment, and what happens after it?

Go and watch ten adventure films on YouTube and you’ll start to see a formula. In the early days of Coldhouse, we mimicked that formula. In the words of fantasy author Neil Gaiman ‘it’s ok to borrow other people’s voices until you find your own.’

But a lot has changed for us, and these days we think a lot more about what the visuals in a scene are trying to say. Of course, when you’re filming in wild places you can’t control the light. But you can choose what you shoot, where you shoot it and when. You’ll often hear the cliché, ‘We were blessed with the light today’, but what if you didn’t want the light?

On our latest project for Mammut in Engleberg, we got what we were given. We shot five ski films in eight days by stripping the team into two separate units. We got what we were given weather-wise, but we used the weather to tell a story. Bad snow and low visibility affect decision-making in high-consequence terrain. That’s a story. Use it. A young woman whose sense of place and home is rooted in this place because of the majesty of getting outdoors told through the final moments of a spectacular cloud inversion and sunset combo. That’s a story. Use it.

These two have been working together for ten years now. Spending time under pressure, with the occasional cocktail of fear, stress, excitement and elation mixed up together creates a relationship that is hard to fabricate or mimic. In many ways, they have opposing skill sets, and that's likely why they work so well together. On their last shoot, Matt Pycroft carried a camera for the first day, fired off one shot and then left it back at camp for the rest of the trip, making the decision to keep his head wholly in the story. Matt Hardy did the opposite, skiing with a huge bag full of cameras, drones, lenses, gimbals and a tripod whilst also assisting Jake Holland and operating the second camera. Ten years of this stuff also creates an interesting way of communicating, too. No need for pleases or thank yous when under pressure. No careful phrasing or long-winded instructions. Just blunt, sharp, real talk that gets stuff done and keeps things moving quickly.

Images from our first independent film 'The Last English Poacher' by .

The poaching wars of Britain were a bitter conflict that raged for almost two centuries in England, yet is almost faded and forgotten in the present day. 'This ancient struggle over game was not just about food for the poor poachers and their families, it was about social rank and the power of the landed gentry, the burgeoning class politics of the time and the harsh realities of rural life.'
Our film 'The Last English Poacher,' directed by , revisits this era through the perspective of a man who still poaches on the private estates surrounding his home, and presents a haunting elegy to our diminished connection to nature.

Watch the film on Vimeo - link in bio. Plans are in motion to do a general free-to-view release online later this year.

Our first independent documentary, 'The Last English Poacher', was released in 2021 and won the Community and Culture Award at Kendal Mountain Festival. The film explores themes surrounding our disconnect with nature in the UK through the perspective of a man who poaches from the land and lives in a way that is reminiscent of the old common and forest law anarchy. Are we strangers in our own land? What does the inexorable decline of our rural communities mean for the future of our relationship with the land on our doorstep? 'The Last English Poacher' is an elegy to fading tradition and forgotten history that feels more than less pertinent in 21st-century Britain.

When it comes to adventure or remote location filmmaking, choice of crew will make or break a production. Shoots like the one we’ve just completed in Switzerland for Mammut are complex with a lot of moving parts, and you need to know that everyone around you is going to excel in their role, whatever happens.

In this shoot we split the team and build two units. A ‘town team’ captured everything that happened below the snow line. A scene in a wine cellar, flicking through photo albums in an old family home and a night time planning moment where two athletes at the top of their game work out (for real) how they’re going to deal with the fact there’s not enough or too much snow everywhere.

The other unit was the ‘mountain team’. Small in number, it consisted of a Director, DoP and Assistant Camera who worked closely together to capture all of the ski action. They had to move in backcountry environments with all their gear in a variety of weathers with everything they needed to shoot five films in eight days, as well as all their personal ski, mountain and safety gear. This team were then bolstered by a range of IFMGA qualified guides, who were there not just to make sure the team were safe, but also to bring local knowledge and expertise on how exactly to turn a vision into reality.

This photo is not of one of our athletes, it’s of ‘Mountain Team’ Director of Photography .co.uk skiing between shoot positions on the Laub in Engelberg.

The violin (usually referred to as a fiddle in folk circles) has long been an instrument used by roaming musicians. It’s an integral part of folk music, as is the land that inspired the music itself.

For the last 18 months, Coldhouse Creative Director has been documenting Sheffield-based violin maker Emma Hardy throughout her process of crafting a fiddle, an instrument she has designed to symbolise our connection to nature and the land justice movement in England.

So often in our world of outdoor adventure, our relationship with the land is about passing through, about ‘doing’ rather than ‘being.’ In part, this has come from a long history of exclusion from the land that has led us to see our natural spaces through very narrow perspectives.

Emma’s upcoming new film ‘Folk Who Roam’, released later this year, challenges this status quo and follows the circular journey of Emma Hardy’s unique fiddle, from conception to creation and finally into the hands of the musicians who take it back into nature, where its materials came from, and where the spirit of the commons is kept alive by those who love the land.

We asked our intern Roxy to share their thoughts on working at Coldhouse and provide insight into their intern film project:

"I’d obviously heard of Coldhouse, but with no formal training, having recently majorly u-turned in my career, and being older than the typical age you think of when you hear ‘intern’, I wasn’t too hopeful when I applied, but I knew I had to give it a shot. The last 9 months with the team have been an absolute whirlwind - and so much fun. It’s been incredibly useful to see how a production house runs, learn the lingo, and be part of much bigger projects than I had as a freelancer.

As part of the internship, I was given (almost) free rein to make my own film. The main learning curve was pre-production, which was still a pretty novel concept for me. It may not be sexy, but planning, budgeting, and learning how to write risk assessments are such essential skills - skills that I didn’t even know I needed. After a few months of planning, I headed out to Lewis to film a canoe expedition - having never been in a canoe before.

My film is about Emily: an all-round outdoorsy person and co-founder of Every Body Outdoors. She gets pretty creative with her adventures, preferring remote off-grid trips. A few years ago, she drew a line on a map of Lewis and decided she could probably get herself and a canoe along the route.

But this film isn’t just about canoeing - despite doing practically every outdoor activity under the sun, she isn't alone in struggling to find technical clothing that fits. This hard barrier to accessing the outdoors comes with the more subtle and insidious barriers of fatphobia experienced when taking up space in the outdoors as a plus-sized individual.

I wanted to use an epic adventure to tell the story of Emily’s search for appropriate clothing, to challenge people’s perceptions, and to contribute to fat liberation in outdoor sports (and hopefully, the rest of society). This topic is deeply personal to me, and I’m so grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity to tell this important story; a story that doesn’t currently exist in UK outdoor adventure films."

In the latest instalment of the Coldhouse Journal, Creative Director Emma Crome shares her thoughts on storytelling through branded content:

"Brand films, " or the controversial phrase ‘branded content, ' is about communicating and sharing human stories and brand values rather than pushing products or services. The genre focuses on stories that convey emotion, define a company’s voice and expression, and connect with human hearts and minds."

Meet Toby Roney, often behind the lens, a Director of Photography and photographer, dedicated to capturing the essence of the great outdoors and the people captivated by it.

We've had the privilege of working closely with Toby on several projects, where his keen eye as a camera operator and photographer has brought our stories to life. Most recently, Toby embarked on an adventurous journey to the Vatnajokull icecap, documenting an unsupported crossing by three individuals with spinal cord injuries. Toby is a valued collaborator, and we're fortunate to have him contribute his skills to various projects.

In Toby's own words:
"Working in the niche that I do, I'm fortunate enough to visit some incredibly remote and visually stunning regions of the world. Something that adds to these unique locations and their beauty are the collaborations that I get to be a part of. Working with incredibly talented teams, capturing unparalleled stories, and showcasing our planet's most extraordinary places. The synergy within these teams, of shared excitement and expertise, is why I love what I do."

Toby's passion for documenting the outdoors and his ability to craft visually compelling stories make him an invaluable asset to our collaborative projects and our team is always excited to have him on the crew.

Introducing We Are Audio, a creative audio company that provides sonic loveliness for sound-to-picture post-production, branding, music, and live broadcast projects.

We share the common goal that every project should be based on an authentic human understanding of storytelling, empathy, mood, and emotional impact.

We've collaborated with We Are Audio on projects like "House of the Gods," where they meticulously designed an immersive auditory experience, and "The Ascension Series" and "Adra," where their creative prowess brought captivating soundscapes to life.

Meet the creative minds behind We Are Audio:

Ben Mason - Co-founder
"I feel equally at home tracking a band in the studio, mixing live concerts, or working as a sound designer and dubbing mixer for TV and film. Staying curious and open to new ideas and technology, I love exploring and creating new acoustic worlds with sound. When not in the studio, you'll find me crashing my mountain bike in South Wales, rock climbing in the sun, or unwinding in the pub."

Ruth Rainey - Co-founder
"As a sound designer at heart, I love using sound to tell a story. Audio has the power to transform what you see and manipulate the mood of images instantly. Mixing my love for the outdoors with my professional passion is a true winner, even if it's usually from a wanderlust POV, as I'm always in the studio. When not immersed in soundscapes, you'll find me hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing, preferably somewhere sunny. And, of course, good red wine and crisps are a big love of my life!"

Jaz Harvey - Tracklay and Sound Design Specialist
"Focusing mainly on tracklay and sound design, I love seeing films come to life as we build and enhance the sound. Whether it's using foley, sound effects, or field recordings, we navigate the story creatively. When I'm not in the studio, you'll catch me surfing in Devon, attempting my first pull-up by spring (mission accepted!), or showcasing my fierce cooking skills. We all share a love for the outdoors and travelling, making our collaboration with Coldhouse not just fun but also incredibly rewarding—even if it occasionally makes us wish we were out there with them!

Meet Menna Wakeford, one of the creative forces behind some of our recent projects. Menna's expertise shines through in her roles as an editor, although she's also a colour grading and graphics wizard. Her dedication to her craft is truly remarkable, and we're excited to kick off our series spotlighting the incredible talents we collaborate with.

Menna shares her journey: "Originally from an arts background, I first dabbled in film production around a decade ago. I've enjoyed a number of roles but have come to feel most alive in the edit, where I can be creative but also nurture. As Walter Murch (Godfather, English Patient) says, it’s an editor’s job to get a reaction from the director in order to spark dialogue that will 'lead to something better than either of us could have come up with individually.' I love this collaboration and the dialogue involved in forming the arc of the stories and characters. The treasure hunt of finding the best content, setting tone and pace, crafting cuts that may tell more about the story than the words, considering the way music and sound land... I constantly remind myself that you’re not supposed to notice the edit; you’re meant to feel it."

She continues, "It has been a total joy working for Coldhouse, with their singular focus on storytelling. They are also at the forefront of pushing for greater accessibility in adventure films—something that is both vital and really exciting to be a part of. For all the challenges that small, indie productions face, nothing beats feeling like a valued player on a close-knit team. The strength of the collaborative teams that Coldhouse pull together is reflected in the quality of stories they are bringing to the table. It’s inspiring to see (and even better to be a part of!)"

Stay tuned for more stories about the fantastic individuals who contribute their creativity to our projects.

One of Europe’s leading adventure photographers, Hamish Frost, lives twin lives. For the third episode of the Berghaus Ascension Series, we explored the side of Hamish he has kept hidden from the outdoor community. It's a story of confidence and connection and a reminder of the importance of diversity in the great outdoors. The film was a few years in the making, from early conversations Coldhouse founder Matt Pycroft had with Hamish that eventually led to the production in the winter of 2022/2023. Since then, the film has been shared widely within the outdoor community and beyond, and we hope that it will continue to have a positive impact on diversity in the outdoors for years to come. You can watch Hamish's film, along with the other two episodes in the series, over on the Berghaus YouTube channel.

We're looking forward to new projects and perspectives in 2024, building on our portfolio of work in storytelling and brand engagement. We pride ourselves on creating films and photography that transcend entertainment and connectivity, striving to positively impact the communities and places we come into contact with. Our short film 'Aziza' picked up the BMC Women in Adventure Award in 2019, with a financial prize that we donated back to Aziza to support her efforts in changing the game for women in endurance sports in Morocco. Aziza has since won her category in the gruelling Marathon des Sables and continues to be a role model for anyone looking to pursue a love for endurance events. The small part the film has played in Aziza's huge legacy is something we are incredibly proud of and will always look to emulate in future productions. Amplifying as-yet-unheard voices and stories in 2024 and beyond will be something special. You can watch 'Aziza' over on YouTube channel or via the link in our bio.

Adra gently gifts us a sense of home, of community, joy and belonging.

Llanberis is the diamond at the heart of the rugged North Wales scenery, hunkered down below Yr Wyddfa and Elidir Fawr it's the epicentre of adventurous climbing in the UK.

This small village and its surroundings have shaped the lives of many, and a climbing culture as historic and iconic as to rival Chamonix or Yosemite has grown from the mountains, quarries and sea cliffs that harbour some of the best traditional rock climbing in the world.

Local climbers Zoe Wood and Lewis Perrin Williams take us on a nostalgic journey exploring how this place has impacted the lives of those who have lived, worked and played in this beautiful corner of Cymru over the last century. Featuring interviews and archives from some of the most prolific and colourful characters of UK climbing, Adra gently gifts us a sense of home, of community and belonging, and how the mountains of Cymru have conjured up the spirit of ‘hiraeth.’

In the words of John Redhead "I think North Wales is the home of the spirit of climbing, without a doubt…"
