I was recently asked to digitise a 1/4 inch tape of a Don Cherry concert recorded live at the Nyon Jazz Festival in 1980. Unfortunately the tape was loose in a cardboard sleeve on an AEG hub. To make matters worse, the centre of the pancake had begun to fall apart and become twisted, making it impossible to thread onto the machine! I ended up laying the tape horizontally on a turntable next to a tape machine with an empty spool at the ready. Over the next hour I manually fed the tape from the turntable onto the new spool, removing twists until the entire tape was transferred. luckily the tape did not require baking and the full recording was recovered and sounds fantastic!😅
