๐บ A story from Kilimanjaro ๐บ
When I decided to climb Kilimanjaro I planned to raise awareness for two causes close to my heart. Grief support and supporting the mental health of brass band musicians.
I decided I wanted to climb with an instrument to represent this, though I didnโt fancy taking my cornetโฆ even though it looks battered enough to have climbed many mountains already!
I wanted to also bring some joy to the party. This was going to be a tough challenge so moments of joy were important. So I had the idea of taking a Blue pCornet and thanks to the amazing support of Warwick Music and PBone Official who support the work I do for the benefit of our brass band musicians, we made this happenโฆ it had to be blue as my own bandโs colours are blue!! (Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band) I also named the cornet Carlton!!
The truth is I totally underestimated the joy that little cornet would bring on the mountain.
It was quite the talking point as it hang off my backpackโฆ it even had a few blasts of the Last Post, morning reveille alarm calls and played a big part in our mountain rave!
Never has a cornet had so much fun at altitude!!
It I will never forget the fun and joy it broughtโฆ check out the video for yourself.
But many people have asked โwhere is the little blue cornet now?โ
Well, itโs still in Tanzania!
The cornet brought so much joy to the amazing Tanzanian porters and guides with so many โhaving a goโ โ even a police officer! But one guide in particular plays trombone in his church and was trying to start a little band and inspire others through music. His name was โMr. Gโ!
So, when we finished the climb after a brutal 7 days, I donated the cornet to Mr. G to help give others a chance to play. He was so overwhelmed and grateful and it was the most glorious moment of gratitudeโฆ we both criedโฆ so the little blue pCornet called a Carlton continues to spread joy in Africa!
Iโll tell you what thoughโฆ thos
How amazing to see members of Winterly Brass Band playing on @george_ezraโs @amazon program End to End!
Time stamp: 45:30
@george_ezraโs second cousin Neil started the band, with his Grandfather also playing in the band. So interesting to watch! You also get to see him giving the Euphonium a go and heโs actually pretty good - fancy joining a brass band @george_ezra?
Just amazing ๐ถ๐บ
