The Story so Far:
Radio Haslar began broadcasting on 14th March 1993. The station was initially launched at the then Royal Naval Hospital Haslar (hence the name!) before extending the service to include the Gosport War Memorial Hospital in 1996. We ceased broadcasting both to and from Haslar Hospital in February 2009 when Haslar Hospital closed down and moved to our current location in Bury House at Thorngate Halls.
With the eventual redevelopment and change of use of Haslar Hospital and on reaching the 25th anniversary of our hospital broadcasting, it was decided in March 2018 to rename the radio station in line with the modern day situation. Thus, Gosport Hospital Radio evolved! We are keen that our activities are associated primarily with the hospital and generally within Gosport - so a pretty obvious title!
We are the dedicated radio station for the patients and staff of Gosport War Memorial Hospital. We provide local news, information and, most importantly, play the music requested by the patients on the wards - our request teams visit the wards three times a week as part of the integrated service we provide. Music is widely recognised as being therapeutic and helps tap in to memories days gone by - happier days. We are proud of playing our part in the recovery of the patients serve, through the radio shows provided which, for many of the wards, is the only entertainment the patients can access.
Maintaining our output at Gosport Hospital Radio costs approximately £6,000 each year without allowance for new music and further extras. As a part of our commitment to the community we try to support any local events, especially to help out other local charities but this introduces further running costs of maintaining outside broadcast units, fuel for generators etc. All organising and presenting of the station and events is carried out purely voluntarily. All of our income is provided from fundraising from the generous people of Gosport who donate at our various store collections and at the numerous local events, and fayres that we attend. On behalf of the members at Gosport Hospital Radio THANK YOU!!
