Council bosses have warned that plans to bring a forgotten Glasgow landmark back to life may not happen due to a lack of cash.

City councillors had approved the use of £250,000 from a UK Government fund to revamp the grade B-listed Whitevale Baths.

The former baths on Whitevale Street are an architectural gem that opened in 1902 but now needs extensive renovation.

The council has been working with Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and children’s charity PEEK to bring the building back into use.
But, despite the initial allocation of cash, officials say they have been unable to find the rest of the required funding to support the project.

Instead, the cash from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will be shared between three other city schemes. These are the transformation of the Briggait Market Halls, new community spaces at Water Row and the revamp of former changing rooms at Queen’s Park recreation ground.

A report by council officials states: “During the due diligence and grant agreement stage of the programme, it became apparent that funding offers would require to be withdrawn from one of the projects: Whitevale Baths.

“Whitevale Baths has been unable to progress their project due to a funding gap and an inability to establish a funding package that would cover the entire cost of the project.”

The allocation will “be unable to be drawn down and spent within the timeframe required and therefore the… funding offer has had to be withdrawn”.

Councillors will be asked to reallocate funds at a meeting on Thursday. Overall, £3.6m of funding needs to be spent by March 31, 2025. It was initially to be shared between six projects.

“As a result of having unallocated contingency, and the requirement to withdraw funding offers from one of the six projects, a total of £454,577 is available for redistribution within the programme,” the council report adds.

Officials have recommended the available money is “distributed amongst the remaining approved projects, all of which have indicated that they require additional funding to complete their projects as originally planned or, have the ability to enhance their project with additional works”.

Work at Water Row to fit out the ground floor space of a new housing development for community and business uses would receive an extra £150,000, taking its grant to almost £794,000.

The redevelopment of the Briggait Market Halls into space for events and creative industries would get £267,000 to increase its allocation to £800,000.

Environmental group South Seeds’ work to revamp the former changing rooms at Queen’s Park recreation ground would be boosted by an extra £37,577.

A POPULAR Glasgow restaurant has collapsed into liquidation as staff claim they have been left "unpaid".

According to a notice in The Gazette, Sapporo Teppanyaki on Ingram Street in the city's Merchant City was put under Creditors Voluntary Liquidation after a meeting on July 3.

Staff members told Glasgow Live they have been left out of pocket following the news and had payday delayed "with very little notice".

One said: "This is the third month in a row when we've agreed a payday and they've delayed it with very little notice.

"At the moment I don't have money to pay rent. We've never been given a reason at all as to why our pay is being delayed."

A statement on the Sapporo Teppanyaki website reads: "Our highly experienced chefs are our pride and joy. Each chef has trained for over five years to become a master of their craft.

Our team of expert Asian chefs has been hand-picked to bring you the finest of Japanese cuisine. Each year, our chefs return to their home countries to allow them to stay in touch with their roots and their cooking traditions.

"This also lets them source the best recipes and reinvent them to bring you food that is authentic, inspiring and contemporary."

Emergency services scrambled to Carlton Place, near the River Clyde, in the Gorbals area after the alarm was raised at around 8pm on Monday. Images shared with Glasgow Live showed flames tearing through the roof and windows of the building as firefighters surrounded the area.

Locals across the city reported seeing black smoke billowing into the sky as the fire ripped through the top of the building. The fire could be seen bursting through the roof of the building which backs onto the historic Carlton building.

Labour MSP Paul Sweeney posted on X, formally Twitter, saying: "Another fire at the historic Carlton Place terrace. This one is more severe and has taken hold in a section of the roof. Thankfully, the firefighters have contained the fire in the attic space and are bringing it under control. We need urgent Council intervention to save it now."

He later added: "The worst of the fire now seems to be out, and firefighters are dousing it down. A substantial section of the roof has been lost, but they have saved the building."

A Glasgow food outlet will be 'sadly missed' as it is closing in the next few days after eight years.

Spanish cafe, shop and delicatessen Taste-Spain La Parada is having its 'last days' in business after almost a decade of business on Byres Road.

They plan to close permanently soon and they cited 'new plans' in their lives as part of the reason for the change.

They thanked all of their customers over the years who enjoyed their authentic produce and said they were 'glad' to bring a taste of Spain to Scotland.

A spokesperson said: "Hi everyone!

"These are our last days with the business and we want to thank everyone who has been there during these 8 years for their support.

"It's hard to say goodbye to so many people we've seen every week in the deli shop or every month throughout Scottish markets for years. You have made us part of your regular purchases and we are glad to have brought products from our homeland to our beloved Scotland.

"Different reasons have led us to take this decision although it was not easy at all; however new plans in our lives are waiting for us out there (show must go on!).

"This week and next one will be the last two weeks of trading in case you miss some products from Spain before closing permanently.

"Thank you very much!"

A global IT issue is causing chaos this morning (Friday July 19) with planes grounded, trains cancelled and banks impacted around the world.

Due to the glitch understood to be caused by a fault in a Microsoft Windows update, Sky News has been forced off air.

Microsoft 365 say they are investigating an issue impacting users’ ability to access apps and services.

They wrote on X: "Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions.

"We still expect that users will continue to see gradual relief as we continue to mitigate the issue."

In a statement on the Sky News online page, YouTube and TV channel on Friday morning, the broadcaster apologised for the disruption.

A Sky News spokesperson said in a statement to the PA news agency: "Sky News has not been able to broadcast live TV this morning, we apologise for the interruption.

"All the news is still available online, on the Sky News app, website, and across our social media accounts.

"We are working hard to restore all services."

It comes amid reports of widespread IT outages affecting airlines, broadcasters and banks.

Glasgow Airport does not currently appear to be affected, however, Edinburgh Airport has shared a warning to holidaymakers that wait time are 'longer than usual' due to the issue.
