Saturday the 5th of June at 10 am. 19 months since my last blog and 15 months since I last attended a football game…. we’re FINALLY back.

I could tirade about the sanctions on attending outdoor football grounds during the pandemic and wax lyrical about new attendance figures or the easing of restrictions but there are qualified journalists out there to do that. I am however passionate about local football clubs. While the mainstream media’s football conversations are dominated by talk of triple-digit virtual season tickets and the numbers inside Wembley, I’m keen to do what little bit I can to encourage people to give their neighbourhood football ground a chance on a Saturday. As professional clubs clamoured for season ticket renewals and shirt sales during the pandemic, a lot of semi-professional or amateur teams were quietly struggling to keep the doors open amid a rollercoaster of stop-start signals from the government.

My first voyage back to football was at Dunterlie Park, the home of Barrhead’s flagship club: Arthurlie FC as they took on East Kilbride Thistle in a preseason friendly.

We’re back!

While Europe's "elite" clubs have spent the last year conniving new ways to stop any crumbs falling from their table, less fortunate clubs have struggled to keep the lights on.

Many of these clubs struggling to justify their existence have been the backbone of their communities through generations and strive to continue to be available and affordable to many more to come.

As lockdown starts to ease and we move closer to football grounds opening to the public, please don't forget the junior clubs, amateur clubs or the non league teams just a stone throw away from your local pub.

footballgroundmap.com. allows you to search by location for grounds at all levels near you.
