A week ago today we were delighted to be at Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show doing some stewarding on behalf of Gillingham Rotary. A privilege to attend such a brilliant local event assisting an amazing local organisation with whom we are proud to be a Business Partner. We were so pleased to be involved!

Saturday 7th December 2024
5pm - 8pm

There will be a Festive Parade through the High Street including illuminated tractors plus activities on the Town Meadow including live music, food & drink, Santa and of course the switching on of the Christmas lights!

This year’s theme will be Christmas Movies!

This time last week I was at my first BWi Shaftesbury Meet Up with a wonderful group of ladies! Incredibly interesting, enjoyable and motivating! Amazing things happen when a group of like-minded people get together for a chat over coffee and biscuits!

It was so nice to meet everyone and I hope to see them all again soon… plus some newcomers!

Thank you to everyone who attended Gillingham Chamber AGM yesterday and to The Slade Centre for hosting us. It was a wonderful evening!
Barry now begins another year as Chair and we are very grateful for his commitment and dedication. We are delighted to welcome Rob to the committee and to the role of Vice Chair (and thank Chris for his previous service in this position). Bev remains as Treasurer and Karen stays on as Secretary - we couldn’t do anything without their skills and hard work. We are pleased that Nigel, Chris and Debbie remain on the committee but are sorry to lose those stepping down this year. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new committee members James and Anne. We now look forward to another successful year ahead!

Did you know that there is a new local BNI group?

A Business Networking International group has started in Shaftesbury. It takes place early on a Wednesday morning at The Royal Chase Hotel and includes breakfast.

It is a weekly networking group for local businesses who are looking to expand their client base and establish professional
connections.

The BNI system aims to help businesses grow in a structured way that enables individuals to make long lasting business relationships and gain support from fellow local businesses.

The power of media!

We have had a recent example of the power that media, television and people hold!

The ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office told the extraordinary story of the British Post Office scandal, a miscarriage of justice in which hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters were wrongly accused of theft, false accounting and fraud due to a defective IT system.

Following the four-part series written by Gwyneth Hughes, directed by James Strong and starring an ensemble cast led by Toby Jones shown earlier this month, public interest was renewed, support greatly enhanced and progress in the group’s fight for justice vastly accelerated.

Initial developments include former Post Office CEO Paula Vennells declaring she would be returning her CBE following demand and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announcing new legislation to exonerate wrongly convicted Post Office branch managers and a "new upfront payment of £75,000 for some of those affected".

Campaigners feel there is still a long way to go but no one is denying the increased attention following the TV drama.

Never underestimate the power of media!

Black Friday is here! What do we think? Is it a waste of time? Something we copied from America that we don’t need here? Are there no real discounts actually available? Does it seem to get longer every year? Or is it just what people need before Christmas? A bit of retail excitement? Some much needed offers to claim bargains when a lot of people are struggling? A way for businesses to generate some required demand to help them stay afloat? It’s another thing that verdicts seem split on!

Gillingham’s Festive Light Switch On Event - The Evening of Saturday 25th November 2023!

Gillingham Chamber of Commerce are delighted to announce the town’s Christmas Extravaganza!

The theme this year will be 'Winter Wonderland'!

There will be:

• A festive parade down the High Street featuring local children, headed up by Santa himself!
• The grand switching on of the Christmas tree lights
• Fabulous live music
• Activities including face painting
• Delicious food & refreshments
• The opportunity to visit Santa

Please do come along with your friends & families!

Any children wishing to dress up & take part in the parade would be very welcome.

We will be posting regular updates on the event so please keep your eyes peeled for further information!
